Although, I guess since you've pretty much added all the lightness you can to your SC you might as well start new with something with lots of "potential".

300-hp and 300 lb-ft of torque is no laughing matter. The WRX STI that I tested stayed glued to the ground and I could under-steer it to nearly the point of no return and apply power that would pull the whole car through the turn.
Explain why Porsche offers AWD and PASM and all the other "brain dead" safety features that keep the uninitiated out of the woods? It is no secret that new P-cars can now be spiritedly driven by anyone with the means and a checkbook. They might not be able to go 10/10th's but 8/10th's is easy and that is what gets them into trouble is when they cross that threshold and "run out of talent". Tom

As an owner of a 911 and a WRX i would say that i would choose the 911. The WRX is a nice car, its pretty quick and with the AWD it handles well arround corners but at the end of the day if you arent constantly flooring it and reving to the redline it can be a bit of a pain in the ass. Mine is a 2001 so its the 2.0l with less torque etc but it drives like a corolla until it comes on boost... sure it is SUPER fun once on boost and really grips around corners but you really have to give it to it constantly. And the WRX is quick but its no supercar. I just find that the WRX is a little blank and impersonal compared to the 911. Honestly at the end of the day the WRX is a hotted up everyday sedan and a 911 is a sportscar.

I own a 84 930 (mostly stocK) and a 04 sti (lots of mods but still not much money invested
) . I love the sti. At low to moderate speeds it is one of the fastest cars on the road. It has a lot of race heritage and was designed 100% for driving pleasure. I like to autocross alot and in this environment My STI is MUCH MUCH faster than my 930. I mean like 5 seconds faster on a 60 second course faster! The 930 is definately the looker of the two though!

We will always be at the top of the list of cars to beat.
The faster your car looks, the more smiling hotshots show up next to you. I get called out a lot, and I've seen it all. 1000HP EVO's, STI's, Vipers, Vetts, Hotrods, you name it. In most cases these guys just want to see me jump on it. If the driver is over 30, I'll jack him up. Under 30, I let him go. You can have fun with these guys, but be carefull you never know if they drive.

I own a 2004 WRX (chipped, updated air/exhaust plumbing) and a '79 930 (moderately updated). If I've gone for a ride in the 930 and later have to take the WRX out, it really doesn't keep up with my right foot's intentions. Maybe with more mods...
However, the WRX is still a helluva lot of fun in the rain/snow, whereas the 930 is a coffin in those conditions. |

My neighbor has a modded to hell wrx and there is no way my old 911 can keep up to it, but not many cars can. Close to 400whp is a lot of hp, but he has gone through numerous transmissions/drive trans.
I have a 2002 Saab viggen that is chipped and has a lot more goodies on it-somewhat of a sleeper; I mean it is a Saab for Christ sakes. But from third gear up I can pull stock sti's no prob. plus a heck of a lot of other cars-to a certain extent. From a stand-still it just spins the tires from first to third-worst gearing in the world. I was on a wide open highway last weekend and I passed a brand new turbo Porsche. That guy dropped into god only knows what gear and took off like I have never seen a Porsche take off. What I mean is that not many people really drive all that fast, but this guy must have been going at least 150-160 if not more because I got the old saab up to 130 and he was way ahead of me. I mean my car is pretty fast of the freeway, but I felt like I was doing thirty mph.

HI jasper,
I am in what you could consider the ideal situation. STI as daily driver and 911 '76 with 3.6 engine as track toy. The STI is supposed to be the wife's car. HAHA I LOVE both of them!! My point of view in your case will be the following: you already had the SC and enjoyed it a lot!!, why not trying a proven beast like the STI. I have to say that on the track the Pcar is more fun!!...but the STI is still great! For the daily driving I would chose the STI. Just my 2cents.

Now I've grown and am ready to spread my wings a bit. I guess if you're going to be a "one car guy" for the rest of your life, the 911 would be the car to do it with, but really, there's no moral code that says you be monogamous with your car. On top of ALL of that, I am in my heart a four cylinder, front engine small car guy. I always have been. I'm drawn to Datsun 510's, E30 BMW's, Alfa Romeo GTV's....and yes Subaru Imprezas. The STi is an early 21st century icon. I want to be able to tell my grandchildren "sure I had a 911, and an Sti as well". Funny though, yesterday afternoon my brther and I went for a tear in the 911 and I believe the words "why would I ever sell this car" came out of my mouth! OOHH GAWD I'M SO CONFLICTED!

A Mormon might say, why not marry them both?
Ditch the satellite TV, go out to eat less often, mix drinks at home, rent movies instead of going to the theater, go backpacking for vacation instead of the Bahamas, whatever, if the money is the issue you can probably un-spend $400.00 a month to make the STI payments. I work about 1 weekend a month to afford racing, you can probably scrounge up a couple of Saturdays here and there and make up the difference if you need to. Good luck with your dilemma. |

(see sig). But I have to say I wouldn't trade the experiences of owning those cars for anytyhing. Do it. If you decide you don't like it, come back to a 911. Maybe a different one...something that will give you a whole new Porsche experience.

Yes. There is an article in the previous month of Excellence about the little known 911's that competed in Nascar in the 60s (or was it 70s?). Pretty cool article.

It's not NASCAR like you're thinking of NASCAR tho...

No, but then again, NASCAR in the 60s was much different than the NASCAR today. It was a participant in an official NASCAR circuit. It was a good article.
