Thumbs up Valve Adjustment Decal for the masses

Update:

Original Message:
OK, somebody smart check this for accuracy;

I plan on printing this out and putting it on a thin magnetic background to fill one of the empty decal slots in the engine bay.

Looks nice, but it is a little wordy, isn't it?

The cam should be a little more to the left so the rocker hits the base circle.

I would delete the 2nd and 3rd lines. It just makes line 4 redundant.

I would replace the word "guage" with "shim".

I would replace line 6 ".004"" with 0.1mm, and delete line 7. Anyone that checks at the elephant foot uses the special tool, and it is 0.1mm, not 0.004inches.

Looks nice! Please show us a photo of the magnet. Thanks.

Good comments,

I agree, its a little wordy...

I stole the diagram from somewhere else...I guess I could edit it

Looking through the previous valve adjustment post and the tech article most posters seem to refer to the "Shim" as a "Gauge" I was trying to use a technical reference to the actual tool used.

Additionally most post refer to the .004 as the most common tool, of course anyone can edit the picture to suit there own needs I haven't copyrighted it, and in fact I have stole everything on it from somewhere on this site.

The magnet is just paper thin magnetic material that has a sticky side to it to affix a decal, it can be trimmed to the same shape, my wife bought it from the stationary section at W-mart.

I think I put the 120 mark in the wrong spot.

I will refer to the initial post as a prototype and see where this post leads for the final edit.

I like it, with other comments noted. Here's another....

..if you rotate in 240 degree increments....you stay on the "same-side" of the engine instead of having to jump back and forth across the engine. So...after you do #1, rotate 240 degrees, do #2..and so on.

snbush67,
Nice job. I agree the 120 mark belongs on the other side, as it is the next stop.
I would suggest you indicate "rotate CW 120 deg. check/adjust #6"......
Great thinking.

Thanks, I had CW in there but took it out I think you are right I will put it back on, even though it is obvious to some, it cant hurt.

I will make adjustments soon, I'm just waiting on a little more input.

Wil,

I agree that the 240 is easier but couldn't figure out a way to make this simple without having to explain why to rotate 240 vs 120, it just seemed logical to follow the firing order sequence. I guess I could make another optional "Advanced Valve Adjustment" decal with less wordiness and 240 rotations for the veterans, and we could call this wordy one above "Valve Adjustment's for Noobs"

Mahalo for the input,

Shane

Shane....
keep it simple...use the original 120 degree pattern....
We can always read up ( here ! ), how to go 240 if we want to....

After looking at it again, I think I will make the following changes;

The diagram point two (2) "Backside" will Change to point (1) as this is the first point one should check. then the adjustment screw (3) will change to a (2) as normally the adjustment would be the next probable step, and lastly (3) will be the gap at the valve.

I will add CW to each of the rotations

I will add a final line that says;

"240 deg. rotations allow for a 1,2,3,4,5,6 adjustment order". (is this correct?)

I will correct the 120 deg. mark on the Diagram and add a 240 deg. mark

I will probably also use the updated engine firing order sequence diagram if I can steal one from somewhere.

I really wanted to keep it simple, finding the balance between making an idiot proof reference for noobs (me) and a simple visual reference for the experts (not me) is what I am shooting for.

I'm just trying to get to 1000 post by providing something more then just 800 post containing two word comments.

Can I have one when you are done?

I like your edits. Yes the 240 CW edit is correct, except delete "1". I.e. "2,3,4,5,6".

Once I am finished, I will post you should be able to print it out. I was not intending to put these into production but I like the idea above.

I will request to post this with the Pel Tel order on it. It shouldn't be a problem but I understand legality and liability.

Here is a blank one for edit if anyone wants to show of their skills, (yes I stole it).

Lets see what you can come up with.......anyone,... anyone.....Bueller....

FYI the method worked yesterday on my stock 81SC engine with 964 cams that were reground from original SC profile cams by John Dougherty. He said he took about 0.002 off the base circle to do the regrind.

I say it worked because I double checked with the standard method at the elephant's foot with a 0.1mm shim tool.

Hey Shane,
I think its great! What program are you using to create the decal? Do you have it in different formats (.ai, .eps, .cdr) or some other vector based program? I would be willing to help out, if needed. I have large format printer with laminator that would make some sweet decals or magnets.

Looks great keep up the good work!
