There is a thread about how to permanently divert air to center vents. I plan on doing this soon. Basically you go into the compartment behind the fresh air intake on the hood, trace all the hoses, remove all the side vent hoses, and manually close off their respective valves.

What is the heat back-date? I noticed the heat blower motor and intake duct are gone, it that the back-date? Do you still have heat? I would love to clean up the engine compartment by removing the A/C but I sill what my heat.

I just started my ac delete and I live in southern Arizona. I do not drive it in the 100's. The sunroof and window suffice when I drive it. I feel anything I can do to reduce wt and unneeded work on the engine will help it run cooler when I do drive it.i

Muy AC was partly removed years ago; still have the lines running to the front of the car, but everything in the engine compartment was removed except for the condenser, which I now have access to because I'm disassembling for a repaint. I'm assuming that the system was purged all those years ago; how difficult would it be to remove this condenser? Thanks!

Dont trash any of it! down here in Louisiana it gets to 110 degrees in summer and that 50+ pounds is invaluable. Most the time you can make a couple of bucks if you List it on ebay.

I removed the sunroof (body shop filled and painted for perfect top) and am about to remove the A/C which I don't use and it never really worked. I have the engine out so the mounting brackets for the compressor are easy to remove. The hoses seem more of a problem. I am about to fill the space for the front condenser has any one done this and do you have pictures?

I filled mine in with some 1/16" sheet plastic. I sealed the edges of the plastic with 3M body caulk. This method applies to the holes in the smugglers box as well...

Also, you'll want to make sure that you fill that gap in the engine tin that's left when you take out the compressor mounting bracket. I might be able to take some pix later if you want...

Plus, I replaced all the sheet metal screws in the pan where the barrier hose clamps were. I used a dab of the 3M body caulk on each one.

I'm in the same boat here -- 85 targa that's in excellent condition
It's my only 911 and I plan one day on owning a longhood hot rod -- for the weight/HP ratio

So I'm on the fence myself since I don't currently have the $$ for 2 porsches but will soon have $$ for the hot rod if I sell targa - -but I love targas and especially this one. You get my drift - do I make this mine in case I don't sell or keep minty -- I am leaning towards leaving the fairly functional AC (I was as shocked as you are) and I just have the belt off for now to prevent the hp drain.

Ironically this is why I hate escalating values even though I own a 50k mile beauty that's already gone up in value in the 9 months I've owned it -- I'd rather have this and another SC coupe or modified 911T with 2004 prices and NEVER care about investment type things. Hard to ignore though.

Oi Fellas!

Just in the middle of removing the A/C stuff from my ´79 911SC. Car was fitted with originally with A/C but PO decided to remove all the major A/C components. He left all the pita stuff (hoses, clamps, evap etc..) So now im just finishing up what has been started.

One question -->

I removed the evaporator from the smuggie. There is a cable connected to the passengerside of the sbox. The wire is coming from the firewall. Can you ID this wire ? Is it relevant or can i remove it ? See picture attached.

Thanks guys!

I pulled the AC from my 85 targa several years ago. last time I recharged it did not last more than a few days. conclusion was leaking from ALL that old hose. and even early on and at it's best was marginal when >90.

if I recall, after pulling all the stuff, 52lb.

at the time I was running my targa at DE, but since have retired and reverted back to street.

at some point I am considering reinstalling a completely new system. it was my first Porsche ('89) and I sold ('97) and bought back ('99). don't plan to sell it again.

but that will have to wait until I have my 930 project done as it will become my next DE/street car. then sell the 928 (cold AC) and 951...
someday.

Thanks for all the info here. I'm planning to have my system on my 88 coupe drained soon and will be removing at least the compressor (probably rear condenser as well). Down the line I might rip out the rest of the components.

Reviving the thread just to say thank you for all the posts; this is now on my list.

Has anyone taken step by step pics? Just curious, but I think I can figure it out.

Jumped in this morning and did the compressor and condenser. There was no refrigerant in it at all.

Does something additional have to be done if I remove the supporting plate?

30 pounds so far. Phase II on the list now. (hoses, interior console, wires)

^^^

This post was made over a year ago, but there is no horsepower drain if the a/c system is not running; compressor pulley just free-wheels if the clutch is not engaged . . . no need to remove belt.

I removed the A/C from my 1988 3.2. One thing I learned is to cut the hoses up. In the engine compartment cut the hoses just before they disappear from view. When you start pulling from the underside there is just that much less to pull. When everything was removed I lost 52.3 lbs. Like a previous post I used sheet metal screws and RTV to plug the clamp holes.

Thanks, that helps.

I got the bracket off today, 2 of three pieces. The last piece has a bolt I can't quite figure out, might wait til I pull the exhaust. Hey, there's the valve cover!

Now to move to the front areas!

Onward to the front. Took out the interior console. Four vertical screws hold it in, very easy.

But how does this assembly come out?

Oh and this tragically cut bulkhead for the evaporator. Ouch!

I'm going to do this to my 77 Targa - eventually. My car still the heavy Behr compressor. According to Porsche it has option # 399: Air conditioning without front condensor. Weird why someone would select this option.

When I replaced my alternator, I could not move the compressor far enough toward the engine to properly get the belt off. The compressor hits the fan housing.

Any of you guys who removed the front ac parts (evaporator assembly, fresh air circulation, etc) have them available and taking up space in your shack? Also interested in the front condenser Bar that protects it.
Allready bought the front condenser from a pelican.

Mine is an 81 targa and the PO installed a horrible universal evaporator fan assembly.
