Talking Taking a long trip

1987 carrera...
I am planning a long trip at the end of May, driving leisurely from Toronto Canada to Daufuskie Island South Carolina...(just adjacent to Hilton Head), approx 1200 miles each way.
The trip will pass through historical Pensylvania, Virginia's skyline drive , North Carolina to its destination (4-5 days )
My car is well maintain and in good shape...but I would appreciate your suggestions as to what issues may arise and the parts that I should equip myself with...just in case.
Things that you might have encountered in the past that should be noted. THANKS!

Having done a 3,200 mile round trip in a 86 Carrera a few months back, two essentials are a cup holder and a radar detector! BTW, the seat track mounted cup holder that our host sells is good. It's kind of in the way for ingress and egress, but it's just in the right spot for holding that large coffee for easy access to the driver (the passenger can hold on to their own damn drink, right?)

Credit card with a large limit.
Roadside assistance plan with flatbed towing.

There are some good independent Porsche shops in Charlotte and Charleston if you need them. Hopefully you won't, but the very 1st time I took my 84 out for a spin, I ended up calling GEICO for a flatbed.

Porsche Shops

https://clubregistration.net/club_admin/files/Carolinas%20Region%20PCA/Approved%20Tech%20Inspection%20Facilities.pdf
Not sure you can access unless you have an account on club registration.
A list of approved DE tech. inspection shops for a fair amount of the SE including up to VA an PA I think. If you get in real need a repair type trouble, these guys should know our cars better than most. I keep an up to date list in my car at all times as I drive alot. Be prepared.
I assume there are lists like this all over the country.

Having recently done a trip from NY to FLA, I can tell you the worst states are VA and GA for Troopers and speed traps.

I must've seen 10 cops in 50 miles in VA on 95. They're everywhere. Drive the speed limit or just be careful…your Ontario plates are a dead giveaway. Other states were fine…I did +10 MPH and I was fine.

i do a long trip every year - cleveland to hershey to baltimore to atlantic city to philly to nyc to cleveland in my 83. a good gps, good radar, AAA (or something similar), a cell phone and a credit card are all you need. maybe plan an extra day or 3 for each leg of the trip if something comes up, but other than a very thorough pre-trip inspection on the car not much more is needed.

-edit-

oil.. forgot to say bring a few quarts of your favorite quality oil!

I have driven from Tn to Fla on two occasions now in my 911 and mainly thru the state of Ga on I-75 but also with some miles on I-95/I-16(took a swing thru Savanah to eat at the Shell House on the way back) and the thing that I noted was the lack of full service gas stations. You will mainly be filling up at convenience stores so you will need to carry your own sources for oil and other consumables. You will probably pass a number of Walmarts so you may be able to restock if you are using mainstream products.
We do carry a small cooler with water bottles and some snacks and candies. One of the best (and worst) things about long trips in 911 is the range of a tank of fuel. I have to stop more frequently than the car does.

I travel N.Y to N.C. often but in other cars than my 79SC. Always full auto club services and cell phone of course, gps is so handy for gas stations and food. No radar in Virginia they are illegal and speeding with northern plates can be trouble.

Fuses
Alternator Belt
Flashlight
Tool kit as supplied
Pelican bookmarked as where ever you are some help/advice is available

I have ready for my SC so I can now make a few long distance trips in addition to the above mentioned items:

Spare CDI
Coil
Fuel Filter
Rotor
Dizzy Cap
Relays
Fuel Pump
A coil of 12AWG wire
Wire/Cable Ties
Duct tape
Multimeter
External voltage regulator

I make the trip in one 12-14 hour day with almost no luggage so space is not an issue.

I had a few more items for 2 water cooled VWs I drove about a million miles between them and only got flatbeded home 3 times which were due to broken CVs and once for corroded grounds.

2 cans of fix a flat....

Did a trip with one of my buddies in his 82 911 and the only thing we were happy to have brought was a can of tire fix stuff...
Halfway through the rocky mountains we picked up a 4 inch nail in the rear. Nothing around for miles.
Saved our ass.

The '87 has one of those collapsible space saver spare tires. You will probably want to make sure that you have a working air compressor.

NYNick - You got that right! I am now in FL coming from NJ doing my rounds in MD, VA, NC, SC and GA and got a ticket at SC going to Greensville. They were are all over I-85 and I was doing +10 (75 on a 65) using company's car with CA plates. A lot of questions asked and you would see LEO checking out the stuff at the back of the CX7. There were a lot of cars with local plates even faster than I am but I was the one spotted within the group.

So I guess going back to NJ in 2 weeks will be a slow journey for me.

PS - had a flat at Orlando so better have those fix a flat or something handy. Good thing it happened a few blocks away from those tire shops

Don't stress about it. My trip was over 5000 kms: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/new-zealand-australia/796074-my-hemingway-moment-tasmania.html

I had my moments but all I had was my iPhone and a credit card.

Get out and do it.

How many miles on your car? You may want to replace the reference and speed sensors.
