Best Carpet Adhesive

Hello All,

I am fixing some carpet issues and I would like any input on the preferred carpet adhesive. Brand and specific type would be appreciated.

I realize that the professionals would use a carpet adhesive pot - but this will be a home installation.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks All,
Chris

Other people will undoubtedly have another take, but I use 3M Super 77 spray adhesive. It is a high tack contact type adhesive.

Dap Weldwood contact cement if you don't feel like dealing with over spray. I went this route because I felt like I could control the application of adhesive a little better with something you brush on rather than spray.

The 3M spray is actually surprisingly easy to use and I didn't find overspray to be an issue at all.

I did not have any issues with overspray. I held a small piece of cardboard to "mask" any area that I had to protect, but even if there was a little that's what 3M adhesive remover is for!

It also depends where we are talking about. I recently did the entire carpet set in my '86, and used 3M Yellow spray adhesive for most of it, along with some Weldwood contact cement at the A pillars, tops of the door pocket pieces, etc. I don't think which adhesive you use is all that critical for most of it, just use one that dries reasonably quickly, and make sure to get good coverage so it doesn't pooch out in spots. Also, make sure to have very good ventilation, the fumes from the adhesives are pretty noxious.

The Lakewell install videos on Youtube are well worth watching for general carpet installation how-to.

+1 on the fumes. I actually did mine over last winter doing a couple pieces at a time. Both the dap and 3m put off some pretty hardcore fumes.

Be very careful with 3M Super 77 spray adhesive.
As a graphic designer, we used this all the time.

Lots of tiny dust sized particles of glue floating around,
you breathe those in and they are in your lungs forever.

Wear a Mask!!!!

For carpet, use a brush and a quart of glue.

I used 3M Super 77 with very good results. No issues 4 years later.

Agreed, I did full carpet in my '88. Mask liberally with masking tape and masking paper before spraying.

Try a good quality dual sided tape. Easy to re-do if you didn't position everything correctly in the first place.

On the 900 Series cars Porsche didn't glue the carpeting down to the tunnel or to the floor pieces of carpeting. (The 4 "mats" if you will)

It makes sense as they are more easily removed for future access to the tunnel and also for cleaning or replacement.

I have done a couple full carpet installs plus repairs on client vehicles.
The 77 is ok, a little more professional is the 3M 08088 General Trim Adhesive. Still a "convenience" can. Nozzle gives some control for the spread of adhesive. It's also a stronger bond than the 77.
For areas like gluing down the rear seat cushions I use the 3M Yellow Super Trim Adhesive 08090.
DAP contact cement on door pockets and other vinyl/leather trimmed areas. Esp. at edges where you want a strong bond right away.

Can be purchased at your FLAPS or other supply stores. Around $20.00/can. 2 should more than do 'ya.

I much prefer 3m super 77 to 3m general trim adhesive. I spray out of the car however. I found the bond to be stronger, and it only loses a few degrees of max heat resistance. Agreed on contact cement for the high tension areas. I preferred the super77 for foam and underlay, and 3m trim adhesive for carpets (less overspray allowing application in the car)

We used 3M Adhesive Spray for our 190SL carpet install project. We mostly used it for the thermal and sound deadening material, which it worked great. For the carpet we're actually going to use velcro so that we can remove the carpet when needed for cleaning or other reasons. But our 190 also didn't come with carpet and was stripped almost completely. Otherwise, the 3M would be a good choice, as already suggested above.

If you're going with the DAP/Weldwood (which I did in some areas), use the solvent based in the red can, rather than the water based in the green can. For what it's worth, I found that the gel-type was a lot neater to brush on for avoiding the snot-like drips when the brush leaves the can.

I'm just finishing the interior of my build. After several adhesive and glue missteps I settled for 3M 08090 Super Trim Adhesive for EVERYTHING. Stays really sticky for a long time so you can take your time to adjust, reposition and tighten. I found 3M 08088 to be lousy stuff, aka no sticky, perticularly for stiff square weave carpet. Nozzle is quite direct and for tight spots around the headliner I sprayed adhesive into a small container and applied with small brush. 3M cleaner works well too.

Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Johan
