It really is a big difference.
Unfortunately, between my car being filthy (especially the wheels) and my mediocre photography skills, you may just have to see it in person.

But they're the exact same color as the Indigo Blue magnesium wheels on late model RS cars. (as a point of reference)

Post-weekend photo dump.

Didn’t work on the car. Did hang out with my long lost friend. Did go out to eat and for a walk and went shooting.

Friday we got a 5-axis at work.

I went to the dentist.

Shooting prep

Long lost friend car decals

Went to doctor this morning.

I took a nature pic on the walk, but it won’t upload because it’s 4.5 and that’s apparently too close to 5.0. Idk I’m not an ornithologist.

Quick Sunday AM post while I wait to order my breakfast.

I had been putting off (properly) installing the license plate because I (of all people) was not stoked about punching holes in my bumper.
I made a bracket and didn’t like it.
I considered just stabbing the plate on the bumper w/o a bracket.
I didn’t like that either.
So I tabled the whole thing and yeeted (yote?) the plate into the back window while I mulled it over.
Well Ruchlos is officially <5 weeks away, and that forced my hand. So I did some shopping, made some choices, and spent the money.

Yesterday, with new parts in-hand, I headed out to the garage to make the car legal.
I applied copious amounts of masking tape, drew all over it, and then punched two holes in the bumper.

I peeled off the tape, offered up the bracket, and stuck in the Kelly-side screw.
The Chris-side screw resisted.

Garbage-metal screw broke in a fiberglass bumper with a pilot hole.
(I am become Death…Destroyer of screws.)

So I masked the surrounding area ahead of the impending excision procedure.

Some drilling, bandfile-ing, some carbide burring, and a heap of swearing later, the offending screw was removed. But despite all reasonable efforts, the screw hole was not the original shape, nor in its original location. I fettled and tried several screws and eventually got the plate on straight. (enough)

I then spent the next 2-2.5 hours removing the low-mount third brake light, extending and re-routing the harness therefore, and then installing the high-mount third brake light.

If my oil is delivered today, I’ll try to get out there and change the oil and start final prep for RR5.
Have a great week, everyone.

Thanks!

Just noticed no license plate lights. In case you need some - I used these:

https://www.oznium.com/led-bolts-prewired-leds/premium-side-view-led-bolt#photos

Just replace the top bolts that hold the license plate to the frame.

Easy there, officer.
Gray-market 79s didn't come with license plate lights.

After thousands of dollars and years of frustration, I’ve isolated the rattle/clunk noise in the back of my car when rolling over low-amplitude, high-frequency bumps.
It’s my Vonn shocks. (I’ve replaced the TA and spring plate bushings twice to no avail.)
I think it’s just the sphericals at the bottom, but I won’t know for sure unless I replace the sphericals and swap the shocks again. Kinda just want to toss fresh Bilsteins in this pig and move on, but lots of conflicting info I never sifted through having always planned to do Vonns or coilovers.

Car is very light (<2200lbs wet) with 22/31 TBs and I’m officially accepting shock/strut recommendations.

I'm sharing this in case it's helpful (not stating your diagnosis is wrong) - I have Vonn Level 1 on my Targa (front and back). I had a similar issue but also had both a pronounced clunk on low-speed hits and same as you on high-freq bumps. It turned out to be the rubber bushings sandwiched by the top of the shock rod where the shock attaches to the body. I replaced those with factory Porsche bushings and it's been good since. The bushings I took out (and I think those came with the shocks) were hard and compressed after only a few years of use. The shocks have given me no other issues.

If they were offered with more spindle lift than 19mm, they'd be at the top of my list of options.

Man, I don't want to spend $6-8k right now as much as I'd love a set of MCS on this car. (There's no way I wouldn't go remote reservoir 2-way shocks if I ordered new MCS.)

I installed the (1980 date code) stock shocks to confirm the shocks as my problem. I then turned my focus to the Vons. The sphericals at the bottom are torched in less than 5 years' time. I've ordered replacements and they'll be here this week. If that doesn't do it, I'll try upper bushings...but the 45yo bushings on the stock Billys seem to work fine.

I'm hoping to fix this with minimal outlay of cash as I've fully reached the end of my patience with this car and I (and it) need it to just behave for a few months or I'll start shopping 993s and 718s in earnest.

New bearings (shock lower mounts) fixed the noise.
Equal parts relieved and frustrated.
Going to keep a spare set of these on hand and change them regularly.

Anyone know if 72 or 75 914 pedal clusters will bolt into the SC? I’d like to lose the booster and I happen to have some 914s in my driveway.

As I recall the 911 and 914 clusters are identical aside from the clutch pedal being a slightly different shape

If you swap the brake pedal for a non-boosted setup, that gets you part way there. You still have to figure out whole bunch of other stuff, including but not limited to figuring out how to trigger the brake lights.

I know I'll have to redo all the hard lines, install and plumb in a reservoir, trigger the brake light, and probably reinforce the floor and pedal box. But if it physically bolts in, that's way less work than doing all of that and still needing to adapt a different pedal box.

I have all these parts just sitting in the driveway, so if the widebody and quieted suspension reinvigorate positive feelings for this car, I will be doing some new dumb stuff to the chassis and trans.

But I'll take the title to Ruchlos if anyone wants to bring me a big ol bag of that green stuff...
