gauges question
Hi Guys,
my '69 912 has come fitted with 5 gauges, with the 2nd gauge in from the left having a temp gauge on the left and a oil pressure gauge on the right. my mechanic has told me this are 911 gauges and were not original on 912's, thus there is no way of getting an oil pressure measurement on the 912 engine, just a light that goes out on ignition. Is this true? more importantly I can't get my temp gauge working, I know the usual 912 temp gauge is on the top of a dial and goes from left to right. is it possible to get a sender and gauge that will fit my "upright " dial and my engine?? my sender and gauge at present seem not to be compatible, with my temp gauge shooting up to the top when I connect it up. Your advice, as ever is appreciated. cheers Donal

Sounds to me that you need to match the senders with the gauges. The 912 & 911 both use the same oil pressure & oil temp switches according to the PET cd, the 911 uses a pressure xmtr as well. I notice you have posted on the 911 website-I am sure you will get the right answer from them.

Duke,
don't think i posted on the 911 website, least I didin't mean to and I can't find it. Are these gauges stock on 912's or have they been added to mine before my purchase, also my mechanic showed me an oil level sender for a 911 and said there is no where to fit it on the 912 and no sender for the 912 . is he right?? 'cuse my ignorance but what is the PET cd? thanks Donal

Donal: Sorry, I thought I saw a similar post on the Pelican 911 website. Sounds like you may have a gauge from a 68 912 which had a combination gauge with temp on the left & oil pressure on the right. Never heard of a oil level sender on a 912. The PET cd is the "Porsche Electronics Parts Catalogue."

That sounds like a 911 guage to me. Also the sender unit and guage are not matched hence the strange readings. I found this out the other way around, I fitted a 911 motor in a 912 and the temp guage did the same. If you get stuck I have a spare 911 sender somewhere in the depths of the garage.

Thanks guys,
Alan, I'm not quite sure from the top photo but I think the second dial in has the temp gauge on the top going left to right, the gauge I have is similar to the 911 gauge from the bottom photo. Duke good to hear that the '68 912 ( and hence I imagine the '69) gauge was similar. so there should be an oil pressure sender for the engine that will link with the gauge. Wonder where you can get one??

oil pressure gauge in 912
Donal,
I put a 911 oil temp/oil pressure guage in my 912- the 911 guage I'm talking about is pictured in a post above. I sent the gauge and senders to Palo Alto speedo and had them find me matching senders. It is a worthy upgrade- very nice to know what your oil pressure is doing. If you're using that 911 oil temp/oil pressure gauge then there is also a plug for wire to the parking-brake. An orange light goes on when parking-brake is pulled up. Regarding the 911 gas level/oil level guage- it is pictured on far left of the post above- if you've got one in your 912 then you can't hook up the oil level gauge to anything because there is no oil tank in a 912 (unless you've gone and put in a dry sump). Cheers. |

Hi folks, I was wanting to put such a temp/press gauge in my 912. Can anyone that has a set up already working post the wiring diagram for hooking up the 2 gauges? Do you need a 2 pole 5 or 10 bar 911 sender? Does an extra wire need to be run back to the engine? Would really appreciate the "how to" Thanks much.

Sweetheart912,[!]
Yes, the oil pressure sender I purchased has 2 poles. But I only use one. The one I use is the one for oil pressure level. The other pole on the sender is for an oil pressure idiot light, but there is no oil pressure idiot light on a '68 911 oil temp/pressure gauge. Note: I also purchased an oil temp sender that jibes w/ the oil temp part of my '68 oil temp/oil pressure gauge. Both of the senders I mentioned above bolt on to the 912 motor as if they were stock. As for the '68 911 oil temp/oil pressure gauge, it has tabs for: oil pressure level; oil temp; and handbrake. I have wires running to those corresponding units. Regarding your question about "bar" level: I think you want 10, not 15. Best as I can tell, the only pre '73 cars that used a "bar" measurement were the European models, and they read to 10, not 15. See for yourself on pages 47-49 of Johnson's "911/912 Restorer's Guide to Authenticity" Cheers, E. |
