colour of the wire for the stock 944 shift light
hey, does anyone know the colour of the wire to the stock 944 shift light in the tach?
my car had one at one point, and when I pulled the cluster last year, a bulb socket different from the rest fell on the ground and I found a wire (if memory serves it was a black wire with green stripe).... I'm wondering if this is the shift light...

Could it be called the "Illumination Potentiometer" in the electrical diagrams? I find it in the back of the Haynes Manual. I do not see a "Shift Light" or "Shift" anything anywhere. This thing is connected to the speedo. It says "Grey/Blue" and "Gr" for the wire colors if that helps you any.

Google is your friend
"The present popular usage of the term potentiometer (or 'pot' for short) describes an electrical device which has a user-adjustable resistance. Usually, this is a three-terminal resistor with a sliding contact in the center (the wiper). If all three terminals are used, it can act as a variable voltage divider. If only two terminals are used (one side and the wiper), it acts as a variable resistor. Its shortcoming is that of corrosion or wearing of the sliding contact, especially if it is kept in one position." |

I doubt it. I am guessing it is the cabin dimmer.

Well thanks for the info! I still do not see a "shifter light" in the diagram.

I think Porsche called it CASIS Computer Aided Shift Indicating System if I recall correctly.
Does anyone know how the DME decides when to illuminate the light? How does it know when to shut the light off when you push the accelerator down without a throttle position sensor? Is it a rate of change in the AFM threshold?

a lot of previous owners cut the bulbs out because it gets annoying (apparently).
I'm 90% sure that all 944's have it...

It's a liitle orange light on the top part of your tach. It comes on to tell you when to shift to help you save gas.

I've looked on mine with the dash out and the only bulbs present are for illuminating the clocks when the main lights are on. No black wire with green tracer I'm afraid.

Now that I think about it... I doubt there is a wire. It should be a part of the circut on that green ribbon backing with a blub holder that you put the bulb in and twist into the socket. That's how all the rest of the blubs are back there. Does that make sense???

The upshift indicator circuitry is inside the tach, so no separate bulb and socket. FSM says replace the tach if the bulb burns out! Is it possible that the extra socket/wire is for the "time to change the O2 sensor" warning light located between the tach and speedo? I'm not exactly what year/model had this "feature".
