Finally took the 85.5 in for a new clutch. 140,000 miles on the original rubber center disk ain't bad at all. It will also get the only944 short shifter. Now I have to be patient until the MORPCA DE at Mid Ohio end of April.

Dog leg arrived and put it on the handle, then put the handle links in the door. All good, even remembered the new seals - but the Tumbler's now jammed and the key won't turn at all.
Thought they'd supplied the wrong side dog leg for a second, but cross checked the part number with the PET and no, it's the correct part.
Thing is, the dog leg was broken off when I lifted it out of the door so I have no reference as to how the lock parts need to interact...

There is a dial on top of the head light motor that you can use to manually raise the lights.

Remove the rubber cover on the motor and it should be right there.

You still have to pull the fuse as well.

Cheers.

Nufy, thanks.
BTW do you know what happens if you just use the emergency headlight manual crank *without* removing the motor fuse first? LOL!!!

Fixed the door lock finally (see separate thread) and now moving in on the headlights.
Having someone over to check the oxidized black paint too..

Question: The lock rod knob (part 33 on the PET 804-05 - mine holds the red LED from the alarm system, and when I pulled it up to unlock, the entire knob came off the locking lever stem. I guess this is just superglued at the bottom, away from the cables? It's totally loose right now.

Thanks!
Chris

New rear shocks. Old ones were really, really dead. PS one was providing no damping at all, as most of the fluid leaked out, and the DS one had seized.

And, well, since I was down there... I resealed the tranny and changed the fluid too. Guess what? Nothing stripped! Not the CV bolts, not the tranny plugs. Secret - you can get an impact gun on the fill plug.

So now I'm feeling virtuous...

Oil change tomorrow.

Tightened my cv axle bolts... For some reason the passenger bolts always come loose... Oh and found a neighbor with a pristine 84 944 that he wants me to work on to get it driving again. Needs some engine work

Oil change took 2hours. With son. Went like this:

Son, here's how to position the drain pan and remove the drain plug.

Dad, that looks like it's gonna take a while to drain. We better play foosball while it does.

Son, good idea.

Half hour later:

Son, here's how to put a new filter in and here's how to fill the crankcase with fresh oil.

Dad, that funnel looks like it's gonna take a while to drain. We better play foosball while we wait.

Tomorrow we do Mand's Jeep. That could take 4 hours... Doing it our way...

Washed the car, taking all that NM and transit dust off, and started attacking the heavily oxidized hood. It worked okay, and if I knew how to post photos here I'd do it, since there's not a lot available online about hoods as oxidized as mine is.

It was kinda sorta a test cleaning because I figured if this wasn't going to work then I'd do a vinyl on the hood for the interim. More pressing systems need the attention for the time being.

Working on the pax headlight as well, but at least the car's cleaner overall now...

Well I decided to buy this the other day. I guess I have a thing for unreliable german cars. :P

I'm selling my daily 944 later this week and keeping my 944S as a project car.

Pax headlight turned out to be the usual dreaded broken ground wire. Soldered it back together and re-wrapped everything and it turned out just fine.

Will go with pureview's H4 harness very soon - excellent product, BTW, but really really wanted to get this one solved before I moved on.
The new harness will bypass the pax side lighting loom anyway, and would have been the ideal workaround had I not traced the fault to its source - but... :-)

Another squawk bites the dust!

Today I rotated the engine a few times to prevent the rings from sticking to the cylinder walls since my car will be stationary for a while.

I also got my flywheel off so I can get it resurfaced.

A month or two ago I did these things:

I removed the front brakes, control arms, and sway bar so I can replace the ball joints, all the rubber bits, put on new tire rod ends, new struts/springs, and paint the control arms/dust shields.

These shocks definitely need to be replaced...

My old engine support bar that I thought I'd never use again came in handy when I needed something to support the engine so I can remove the crossmember to clean it and replace the engine mounts.

Draining the power steering fluid so I could remove the rack while attached to the crossmember didn't go as planned, so I had to abort and support the crossmember with a jack stand.

A few more fun pictures of my current situation:

These axles are shot.

Parts scattered everywhere under my car. I'll never get this thing back together....
