I've been thinking of a 944 with a wingless 924 hatch. This would be cool too.

It would be a lot of work to make a car that would end up horribly tacky.
I mean...its not going to beat this.(At least, not without some serious effort and precision to time consuming detail) ![]() To come even close to pull it off, would require cutting most of the rear of the car off from the side windows back, as well as the roof. You'd want a different quarter window, which would mean a different rear fender shape. The amount of work to make it look anything less than tacky, would be beyond most anyone, and some one with the skills to do it, could better spend their time on nicer projects. I think starting with a cab, would be the right track, different windshield, windows, and roof line would help. Give it a "chopped" look by shortening the roof. Bringing the roof line down and forwards along the windshield line would be key to getting the rear to look some what right. Ferrari's that have that look, have very low green houses.(Btw, the Ferrari Testa Rossa was designed with a hatch, but for lower productions costs, and easier cooling, it got the chopped off rear lid instead.)

The pickup mod may have been to avoid a vehicle luxury tax...

The Finns or the Swiss or something do that right? I think they do it in order to register it as a commercial vehicle, therefore not tagged as a sports/exotic car.
A lot of the LeMons guys run without hatches, you can see how the car looks. I seriously don't know how they do it though. I drove with the hatch slightly up once and all the exhaust fumes come barreling in. Had to stop and re-organize the cargo. Take care! |

I'm sorry, that pickup mod is fugly and not actually very useful, I don't think a full size push mower would fit in there. The wagon mod looks better, but isn't much more useful other than keeping your cargo safe and dry, it's a compromise either way.
I would be much more inclined to mount a small triler hitch on an intact 944 and tow a 4'x6' utility trailer when more capacity is needed. |

i agree that it would probably be easier to start with a cab. the trunk lid is already done for you, as is the rest of the body line. it stuns me that they never made a removable hard top for the cab (though i saw a photo of one many many moons ago. i hate hatchbacks, and most fastbacks, and wish they made a real coupe. hatchbacks were very popular back then though, and very practical, so i get it.

If its your daily driver to get around with, that is huge.

I really love the shooting brake.... the final solution to water ingress issues... and at only 18000 euro's it is not even a ridiculously expensive conversion, considering it's done by germans in germany against german labor and material costs

I drove ~20 miles without a sunroof, hatch or rear side windows in the early morning to get my car painted last year...
It was actually pretty fantastic. Surprisingly wasn't actually that loud even on the freeway...had the heater on and was perfectly comfortable despite the giant holes in my car. Without the ~70lb rear window though the back end does get pretty light, made for some awesome cornering on the way to the paint shop... |
