So Your all saying don't buy Porsche OEM Parts then Correct .
Ok So nobody like's the Porsche Dealer Parts and some think they don't know what they are doing with a 928 Model Lets see the Car in Question is a 1986 S Model 928 The Original Pump failed or perhaps was just replaced at a Porsche Audi Dealer in the year 2000 along with Timing Belt , Rollers and Tensioner gaskets and seals and the like Fast Forward to 2015 well now 2016 and I buy the Car with Water Pump Noise coming from Front of Motor . Doesn't Bother me much as 50 Year Line Mechanic Union Status I pull it down and look at the plastic Impeller Slight Polish Marks on the block and note the Defective Bearing . All Looks Fine except for the water Pump now with a bad Bearing . I do Note the Wear on the Back side of the Plastic Composite type Impeller as well as the Wear corresponding on the Pump itself due to the Impeller not running true with bearing failed . So Just my Guess but expect the OEM Porsche Bearing failed in the ATC Rebuilt pump now some 15 Years old . Humm Perhaps the Rebuilt Pump lasted 9 Years longer then the original Pump . Having replaced some 3 928 Pumps now not a lot but 3 is 3 I understand the poor design of the 928 Belt related to many Issues regarding Failings toward the Front of engine Cam's Pumps Bearings as well as the Motor itself . is it just Luck ? Perhaps so but all the Previously Installed Rebuilt Pumps I Installed are still running just fine so far . Last one 6 Year's ago . Now I never Bought a Known Cheap China Pump but stuck with the Factory Type Bearing Pumps . Yes I understand Many here are have found the great Pumps now Available like the Guardian most Likely high up on the scale . Looks Fantastic to me that's for sure . I don't mind being thought of as a Modern Day Idiot when My Posts are read . When I am driving my 1980 928 5 Spd I paid $300 cash for after it sat 15 Years under a tree with a failed Injection Relay Invoking into a need for a front End Motor Refresh due to all the sitting when the bearing Stuck until the Motor Got Hot after I started it up then Broke free but made Noise as the bearing Failed . Another 1986 928 S comes along with some 68 K Miles , More Money @ 2K But cheap for the condition as I see it rust free and straight with so so Interior. A running Car with quite Motor but with the Noise Up Front . So waiting for the Parts and Back on the road she go's to Bad Its a Automatic Trans But what the heck the wife can drive it . I Hope all who Hate anything other then what they Like < a wide assortment as I see it . I well think of you perhaps a time or 2 as I wait for next Brake down lol I doubt it well be a broken Block from a Plastic Impeller like the Laso or Porsche now sells But the Proof is in the pudding as they say I can't help wondering how much Money member's here would say I should have put into ether of these 928 Now in the Garage ? . I do Know People keep asking me to work on their cars and ask me to keep them in mind if I want to sell any of my 928 Cars ? No Doubt they would sell fast . Just sold the 90 911 C4 as well as a 76 450SL for some Large Dollar amount . Perhaps I well Buy a House / Vacation Spot in the Philippines with the Money ? sounds like a Plan . Or Perhaps I well reconsider and get a Guardian Type Pump and a Gold Searing wheel and the like ? Thanks for all the support and I do truly apologize for all out their that don't like OEM Porsche Parts under their Hood . At Least I don't want or have a Chev Motor under mine Last edited by aluminum; 01-02-2016 at 05:07 PM.. |

It's an expensive business this 928 love affair of ours but don't cheap out. Is it really worth it to save a few bucks and take a risk on something that could kill your car? If it was a wiper motor or a fuel pump, sure, take a chance. Something as critical as a water pump, no freakin' way. |

Some of the very knowledgeable members on here have posted their recommendations. You can take their advise or not. I find some real experts with vast experience on here and have taken their time to help you. Trying to justify saving a few $ on a water pump which might fail is ridiculous. I think I paid $350 for my new pump, it's a Porsche, more than you paid for your car!

Maybe people with non interference cars should go ahead and buy whatever is cheapest that they like, and be the test volunteers for the group. Peace of mind may be worth more than the price difference to others.

Al,
I bought rebuilt water pumps back 7-8 years ago when it thought to be okay to install rebuilt water pumps. Both failed last year within weeks of each other last year (2015) My engines weren't trashed, but they could've been trashed if I didn"t know what to listen for, look for, and watch for, etc. In addition, I did a TB job on my GTS last year. I didn't replace the water pump, which was a new Porsche OEM when installed at the last TB replacement. 3 months later, that water pump dumped the entire contents of the cooling system on my garage floor upon start-up. No warning at all. Again, my engine wasn't trashed, but I was pissed at myself for not replacing that damned water pump the first time around. I got to do another TB job!! Oh Joyous day!!

![]() the 86 Porsche 928 I paid $2k for the 1980 was $300 ( the guy wanted $500 but my wife said how about $300 and the guy a retired Attorney said sure . So Tell me if you want to ![]() How long do you expect your " Porsche Pump " well or should last ? I think this is a good question for all 928 owners . As I understand it all the factory Porsche Pumps now ( after learning ) have the plastic Impeller's . I wonder if they have the combo Bearing ( roller and Ball ) Laso has told me their current Pumps have this Combo Bearing Ball & Roller as well as the Plastic Impeller. This is the USA Distributor for LASO www.imcparts.com Wholesale only I well not talk here about the Porsche Dealer Sold rebuilt Pumps because everyone freaks out lol except to say they have the same parts according to them . As a Long time mechanic I would suggest a front end refresh about every 5 to 7 years depending on miles used . longer if Car stored with no liquid in the system in temperature controlled storage the W.P. bearings tend lock up on long storage. I just received my new Laso water pump from Roger.
Should I use any sort of sealant in addition to the paper gasket? How about on the bolts? Thought I read somewhere it was suggested to use something but can't recall the details. I guess if any of the bolt holes go through to the water jacket it would be a necessary. |

Tap Any bad threads should you have such . ( so slow as the aluminum is soft )
some Indian Head sealant is fine Just a dab. Yes some bolts go into the Water Jacket and you can buy new bolts from Pelican if needed Most use a small amount of sealant on the Gaskets . Spend some time removing all the old Gasket material from the block and get it all . Pay special attention to the Seal / Gasket where the tensioner bolts on The Aluminum Block can and well Scratch up easy so be very careful or you well lose the sealing ability. Others : Check for wear on the crankshaft from front seal . DO NOT FORGET TO CHANGE THE FRONT SEAL FOR SURE like $10 You really need a Tool to tension the Belt and it must be re-tightened after some miles or time I would say 5 to 10 K Miles or a Year gone by , simple just pull the cam cover and re set it . The Laso Pump is a good one for the simple reason of the Combo Bearing ( roller / Ball ) If I could buy the Bearing alone I would lol Replace any bad rollers and the Belt tensioner should it be bad . Naturally the Belt as well |

5L32v4c - We have sets of WP bolts if you need them.
Use a very thin smear of RTV on both sides of the gasket. It can make life easier if you smear it on the block and then apply the gasket. That will keep the gasket in place while you position the water pump. Check for oil leaks from the driven seals - behind the cam gears, oil pump seals - front seal, outside seal and the three individual bolts, and the crank seal. If all are good LEAVE them alone especially the crank seal. ONLY replace if they are leaking. If you are using the old de-tensioner check the belt tension after 1500 to 2000 miles and every year after that. If you are using the modern PKtensioner no need to check tension ever again 8>).

Porsche Factory Rebuild Kit Photos 928 106 915 AX
Thanks everyone for all the input :
Here are some Photos of the just arrived by Order from Germany the Factory " Rebuild Kit " from Porsche , Right from the Porsche Dealer sold nationwide with a Factory 2 Year Warranty. Cost $189.00 or $202.00 with Tax in L.V. Nevada . No charge for shipping Picked up at the Dealer. Part number 928 106 915 AX Pump comes with all New water pump Bolts , Washers , Timing marker , and Mounting Gasket all Included in the Pump kit cost . This is a Porsche Factory Kit . The Pump looks Great, Impeller is Plastic and I expect the Bearing is a updated bearing with the Warranty they have ( note some dealers may need prodding to find this part but they do have this part at Porsche ) Can be ordered at any Porsche Dealer with some waiting time involved for shipment . You well Note the 2 Steel oil deflectors on the crankshaft to keep Oil off the Drive Belt in case of leakage from the Front Oil Seal. About the front Crankshaft Oil Seal . Every One I have done I have noted the Seal leaking some more some less. The seal is about $10. If It's not leaking and starts leaking your going to have to do the job just about all over again to change the seal. The Oil well ruin the belt .If considering not to change the Oil Seal one might ask themselves why not ? ![]() ![]() ![]()

Kit Included photos
Forgot all the new parts Included with the kit with the Pump price
Note : Everything on the Pump looks brand new . The Pulley , Impeller . Impeller Shaft and I expect they are just that NEW ! You can't see the bearing of course. Pump has a weep hole for a water weep. All this for $189 with Factory Porsche Warranty The one I am working on just now had a rebuilt pump on it Installed by Porsche Dealer in 2001 and the bearing just Failed Humm 15 Years gone by . Pump Had the Plastic Impeller and so no damage to the Aluminum Block just a tiny polish mark from the Impeller wobble with the bad bearing . The Noise from the bad Bearing was Loud and water running out the weep hole to ground ![]()

Yes a very pretty water pump - nobody can argue that but but - it is a rebuild. You just have to ask yourself "do I feel lucky". Some will get away with it others will not. Just false economy in my book.
For those that are thinking about ordering this rebuilt pump ensure you have a Porsche OE pump to hand back as your core. Core charge is $120 and unless the core you return is a OE Porsche water pump with a plastic impeller they will not honor the core so your $190 pump could cost you $320. So check before you order. The reassurance I feel in getting my water pump from Roger is worth waaaaay more than I could possibly save getting a rebuilt one, or one from a less reputable source.
Place your trust in Roger folks, he won't steer you wrong. If he does, I know where he lives!!

Aluminum,
I wish you all the best luck with your water pump. Hopefully, it will give you many years of worry-free service. However, since Porsche is only giving you a one-year warranty, I would PLAN to replace the water pump in a year. If the replacement is not needed for that year, then you are ahead for the year anyway. You are going to need to learn to enjoy replacing water pumps I, myself, would have a problem with the worry-free part of the equation.

928 106 915 AX Water Pump Rebuild Kit
RE: 5l32v4c
The reassurance I feel in getting my water pump from Roger is worth waaaaay more than I could possibly save getting a rebuilt one, or one from a less reputable source. Place your trust in Roger folks, he won't steer you wrong. If he does, I know where he lives!! Thanks for reply So you know where he lives , is that Texas perhaps The Porsche Car dealer I guese your saying is a " less reputable source " humm Perhaps your saying that if You Bought a Porsche Car new or used you got it from a " less reputable source " then or any Porsche Dealer parts as well would be a "less reputable source " Personally I am Happy with The Porsche Car Company and the Porsche Car Dealer Parts .The Factory Warranty seems like a good thing to me and I have no Problem with such . I trust the Porsche Warranty 2 Years dealer Installed or 1 Year self Installed . I Just Sold mt 1990 Porsche 911 C4 last month and it certainly Held It's Value selling for $20K after 13 Years gone by since Purchase. Perhaps I was Lucky it had No Water pump at all . Everything in the 928 106 915 AX Water Pump Rebuild Kit is with Porsche Dealer Parts and Warranty . All the Part's on / in the Pump are Brand new , Yes Brand New Porsche dealer parts from Germany ( not China ) I don't however know where the Corporation owners live lol however I trust the Car Dealer Warranty Evan so . BTW : I also Ordered a New Porsche 928 105 571 06 Tension Roller for the Pump Is a superseded Number from the old Porsche # 928 105 571 02 Tension Roller . This is the Small Roller that presses on the Water Pump RE: stepson Aluminum, I wish you all the best luck with your water pump. Hopefully, it will give you many years of worry-free service. Thanks for Reply : I shall Begin the Install in a few days when I receive the new Updated Roller ( 928 105 571 06 Tension Roller ) that Installs on the Pump . The pump I removed was also a Porsche Dealer Rebuilt Water Pump installed by the Porsche Dealer I have the Receipt from Aug 2001 so 14 Years on the old pump wow that's Impressive in my Book . Lucky the Porsche Dealer Pump had the Plastic Impeller as the Bearing turned hard and with Wobble of the Impeller . Engine Block has a Polish Mark where the Impeller rubbed it . My 1980 16V 928 has a Rebuilt Water Pump I Installed in 2010 still working just fine however it was NOT a Porsche Factory Pump so I wonder how long it well last . |

The Porsche dealer sure enjoyed taking your circa $164 for that simple roller 928 105 571 06 when most just change the bearing for $7.25. And that bearing is better quality than the one in the roller supplied by Porsche.
For someone who goes to the extremes to save money you sure have a strange way of doing it. Sorry I forgot you are not interested in any advice.

and when your metal impeller eats into the block here is one solution..pretty ugly process, well detailed by Dwayne, as usual for him A couple of weeks ago, I completed this repair using Greg (Brown) and Steve's newly developed block repair tool

That Block Repair is Fantastic , I really Like the entire Procedure . I wonder if One can perhaps
Space the Impeller forward to obtain the Block to Impeller Clearance as well. The Back side of the Impeller simply being Flat I doubt would be a Issue to the Water Circulation produced by the Impeller . This 86 YR Model Referenced on this Post having the plastic Impeller certainly Saved the Block From such Damage . I did Note the Polished Area's where the Impeller ( Plastic ) Rubbed the Block creating the Polished Looking Area's Now if the Steel Shaft had broke free and Hit the Block no doubt serious Damage would have Occurred. However the Shaft being at the center and well within the Large Hole of the center of the Water inlet certainly limit the possibility's of such happening . The Car now runs Great and whisper Quite with no Issues . Porsche Dealer gave a Discount on the Kit so was quite affordable . Kit has all New Bolts , Gasket . Red Timing Marker with Mounting screws / Washers Pump Bolts are 5 short with neoprene Washers and 8 Bolts with Shoulder Washers . This is a upgrade from original WP Bolts All from Porsche . no Overheating Issues . Interesting that the Failed Pump was also a Porsche Rebuild Kit Pump rather then a New Pump . Luck had it they already had the plastic impeller way back in 2001 . That Pump lasted a Long time for a 928 . I Expect the same for this one . I did not find any Reallocate Type Crankshaft Seals Available for a 928 front Crankshaft seal . I did not need one however did note a tiny mark of wear on the crank . I did note that the seal could be simply Cut down to make your own relocation Seal. Simply Cut some 60 Thousands off the Inner Edge and the seal well move inward just that amount . Having seen Seal ware on 928 shafts before I took interest in the possibles of relocating the seal . Last edited by aluminum; 02-16-2016 at 10:36 PM.. |
