Value question -- crowdsourcing time

I have my opinion, but I'm not the buyer.

What is the value of an unrusted, one owner 72 S non-sunroof coupe that has been converted to wide body with steel flares? Comes with stock lid and tail as well. It has its original sport seats... 915 trans... but no engine. Well-sorted chassis.

This cought my eye. I must say that although I understand a matching number Engine is one thing, and a thing I do not necessarily agree with, factory originality is what the market wants and demands. Although I think that car is really cool looking, most buyers will look at it as a big project regardless if it’s an “S”. I do not agree with the whole numbers matching concept. Many cars simply were used as cars and not coveted as museum pieces back in the day. Ergo if a car has an engine that is fresh and original like, who gives a rip if the stamping matches the almighty COA. GEEZ!
After all this diatribe, I honestly don’t know it’s value. $75k if it’s clean and rust free??
Thank you for the kind words in my other thread. I appreciate that.
Best of luck!

Now there’s a cool looking long-hood. I’m not a fan of narrow bodies, they are just so plain looking to me. That car with some fat hips on it is just awesome though. Drop a turbo in it! 75k sounds a bit rich to me without an engine, but I don’t follow the long hood market much, so my commentary on price is probably not one to rely on. Just had to chime in cause it’s really cool.

Tough one. The flares are a negative for me, as is brown. On the upside - no sunroof and the fact that it's a long hood. No engine eh? $50ish to the right buyer.

$75,000 to $80,000.

Figure a period correct S motor for $35,000 + $10,000 misc..... $125,000 as a package..... seems like a good buy as a complete car in that range......

It is an S tub # but then it needs a lot of work and parts to make and S car out of.
As for a hot rod, S# means nothing and it is missing a engine, but it is a sorted no rust tub.
It will be hard to price and the market right now wants finished cars, 40-50K.

That’s why I say drop a turbo in it. There’s no point trying to bring the S back when it doesn’t even have the original engine. As far as I’m concerned, it’s either all original or a hot rod. This one will never be all original again, so don’t try to get close to it, because that’s just a losing proposition. Since it’s a turbo look already, don’t spend money to undo all of that work - just go with it, boost it.

Strange how disjointed the market is when people can have such a wide range in value on this, from 40k on the low end up to 80k on the high end.

If I think about it as if I were buying. My thoughts are this.
  • With it being modified and without the engine there is no "S" value there. So now it's a long hood Hot Rod with no engine.
  • I don't like the color. Do I deal with it, or figure $20k to paint it?
  • I need and engine and it needs to match the look. $35k
  • What would I pay for this car turn key? $90k. You may pay more...
  • So to me it comes in at $45k-50K. IMO That's a lot to pay for a roller that's Brown.
  • I could probably find a long hood track car for that and convert it to a Hot Rod for less money.

How's the interior and suspension? Anything special?

How's the paint & interior condition? If everything is all there and it just needs a engine swap I'm in the $50k camp.

The paint gives me pause. What I mean is I don't know if the color hurts or helps it. To me, it is a color I would never buy. I don't have a clue what the wider market would think about the color. Is it even original color?

I am thinking as a roller somewhere between $50-75k. The question mark to me is does the color hold it back to a $50k car or does it boost it up to a $75k car?

^^^ I’d opine that the color is simply subjective to the buyer liking it, I don’t think the color itself would necessarily add to or subtract from its value. It’s a repaint, and since it’s not original and never going to be put back to original, its become inconsequential to the value of the car. The quality of the body work and paint job would be more crucial to me, since if it’s poor then that would definitely subtract from the current value - whatever that value is.

Now you’re talking Matt! That’s cool!

I think it's worth 50 to an informed buyer and closer to 80 for a hipster that wants a cool ride.

All the ingredients are there for this to be a high dollar hotrod.

I am with Timchar... 40 to 50. If I bought it at that price and I probably would given the chance, I already have the twin plug ITB 3.4 ready. Maybe someday I would change the color.

you can buy a non matching runner around $80k so $40k max for this one.It will never be worth matching S money and a ton of work and $$ to even get looking stock and running.

Toss it on BAT for a hundred bucks. Set a high reserve and see how the market reacts. Usually a decent barometer for Hotrods and projects. All other things being subjective, some people love Sepia brown. I am not one of them but as some car guys say; theirs an ass for every seat.

They wont take it with perceived "hi reserve"

Agree. I doubt BaT would run this with a reserve anywhere near the upper end of the prices being tossed around for this. The only way this is worth 70k or 80k as it sits, is if the person paying that kind of money for it, also has a lead on acquiring the original engine for this car. Short of that, I see it more like 40k as a hot rod roller, maybe 50k at best.

Assuming the interior is in similar condition as the rest, I say $70K at least given this is just one hot engine and a few bling items away from being a reimagined Theon/Singer type reimagined 911. Done right, who knows ? The sky's the limit among that crowd.
