1974 911 - What's it worth?

Hello Pelican Parts people!

I hope I'm asking this question in the correct section. I've recently come across an interesting '74 911, but it's a bit of a Frankenstein, so I'm having a hard time deciding what it's worth.

Started out as a '74 911, but it has a 2.2 swapped into it, a 930 wide-body kit, and a 911SC emblem on the back with a whale tail! so a bit all over the place.

A couple pictures:

Assuming it doesn't look like a complete basket case (haven't had a chance to see it in person) does the mish-mash of parts devalue the vehicle much? The idea of having a more reliable 2.2 over the early 2.7 seems like a good idea, and I personally like the wide-body look. odometer only reads 30K miles, but I have no idea how many miles would be on the swapped engine.

Hopefully this post isn't out of line.

I think the car would be a good candidate for a 3.2 / 3.0 transplant.
The value as it sits, probably 10k max. depending on rust and flares, are they steel or fiberglass.
Also there is a marketplace discussion forum too.

What trans?

Is it the 2.2 trans shift pattern? Maybe look up the VIN to see what body it is? You can always sell the 2.2 to an early car owner and get a 3.0 or 3.2. Check Pelican, eBay & others to get some comparison prices. Get PPI before buying and the PPI can help with the value question. Call the local PCA chapter for recommendations. BTW: If you get the car and want to upgrade the motor look at getting the complete motor & trans to know your starting point. Also, you will get a better deal on the motor & trans purchased together instead of separately. If the 2.2 trans is in the car, it is much better to upgrade the trans with the motor and sell the 2.2 gear as a pair for more $$$. I should have gotten the 87K 915 trans with my ROW 3.0. Hindsight is always 20/20.

Don't expect the miles to be 30K. More like 230K.
Mine is a 75, it was rebuilt at 175K. I bought it at 235K. Now it has closer to 300K.

It looks like a nice car though. It needs a little work, but most do.
I like it, except for the small motor.

Where is the car located? Looks and sounds like a car that was built here in Colorado lived here for a number of years. If so, it was reasonably well put together and the engine in it was in decent shape when installed. At the time it was way cheaper than rebuilding the shagged 2.7l and smog wasn't really an issue.

If you want to discuss the car a bit privately drop me a line. I think it is a $10k and if you can get it for less I would seriously consider it.

Thanks for all the replies,

Seller is out of town at the moment, so I'm waiting to go and check it out in person. I'm hoping the flares were done well, and metal. He sent me an old Ebay listing description for when the car was sold previously, and it describes that most of the parts were OEM, but the flares look wider than stock 930 flares, hard to tell from the picture though.
If I do pull the trigger on it, I'd love to swap a 3.0 into it down the line.

I've PM'd you Matt.

Update:

So, I took a look at this car a while back, Owner was asking around $15k for it, which was a bit too much for me, he's since dropped down considerably, I can get it for around $10k. It's in fair condition, crack on the dash, needs a tail light, the pneumatics for the bonnet are shot, has an incorrect wiper fluid container (from some other vehicle), it was repainted last year because something in the garage fel on it, but the fresh paint looks good. Car has been local for a number of years, and I know the body shop that did the paint, and the mechanic that did all the service when it was first imported into the province. Fender flares are metal and seem to be done well. Starts and runs well.

Maybe have a 911 in my garage tomorrow night.

See if you can walk up with $9k in your pocket (cash) offer $8.5k and see if he bites.

Go to $9k (turn out your pockets to prove that's all you have). I bet he bites on it.

74 911

15k seems a little steep probably worth between 10 and 12k here in So. Cal assuming no rust or collision damage.

The 2.2 might be valuable to someone with a long hood trying to keep their ride stock especially if it came out of an E or S with MFI. You can take the cash and offset it against the cost of a good running 3.0 or 3.2. which would work really well in the light weight 74 chassis.

The car looks really nice in the photos you posted and could easily be a 15k to 20k car with a bigger motor. Since the flares are done it would be a nice candidate for an RSR conversion by changing the tail and bumpers.

Possibilities are endless.........

Sorry I never answered that pm. There is some glitch with my iPhone that won't let me reply to pms. Since I rarely post from an actual computer and have the memory of a goldfish I accidentally ignore a lot of pms.

Regarding the car, I would buy it at $10. Even if it were in the States I think it would sell for that kind of money, and they tend to run 10-15% more in Canada. Taxes, and importation fees, etc. All that brain damage is already handled on this car.

If you have negotiated it down to $10k and talked to the mechanic and know the body guy it is worth it IMO.

We need to see under that decklid. And a type number and serial number on the engine. I'm betting it's a T, but you might get lucky.

I've seen many a "2.2" -- as claimed by a previous owner -- turn out to be something else. So, Matt's advice is spot on.

+1 we really need to see and know the engine number. What is lurking under this dark mysterio? I like the black if anything its a nice looking body and a swweet start for a hot rod.

VIN is 9114101051

Motor is *6116891 - Not entirely sure how to differentiate the "T" "E" and "S" engine types, probably a "T"

125 PS (92 kW; 123 hp) in the 911T
155 PS (114 kW; 153 hp) in the 911E
180 PS (130 kW; 180 hp) in the 911S

by the way, I did end up buying the car, so far I'm loving it. It's a bit gutless (obviously) but I'm on the lookout for a 3.0 engine/tranny. The body is in nice shape, and the paint is great, it's a great starting point for a really cool car. There's a crack to fix on the dash, and I need to fix up the heater controls, linkage is disconnected somewhere, but overall I'm really pleased, I've put on over 300km this past weekend, holding up well!
