New Porsche for MSRP?
Can I walk into a Porsche dealer, and buy a base Boxster without any options for MSRP (about $51k)? I know they will not have one on the lot, but could I have one built and just wait?
The other question related to the above, would I want a no option car? Are there some must have options? |

When they quote that MSRP for the base car it is a legal offer to supply .. all you have to do is legally accept the offer .. and presumably await the car.

I doubt there is a zero option car in the entire country but they will gladly sell you one for MSRP and build it for you.

This time of year, you should be able to get several thousand off sticker on anything in stock. My most recent one appeared to have only one option (the HomeLink garage transmitter, which I never got to work).
Dealers sometimes order 'no option' vehicles aka "strippers" in order to have a price leader they hope no one will buy... so they can continue to pull people in on the price for months and months.

So getting back to the 2nd question, is there some "must have" options that I should get for a base Boxster or Cayman?

No in fact I think its a good idea to have no options and it will also make the car hold more of its residual value.

Check all the dealers in your immediate area. Call all the "internet managers" personal numbers, and say what you want. Then go further afield if you don't like answers. Always listen to techweenie.

Hennessey Porsche used to stock a lot of Boxsters with practically no options. Now that the economy has picked back up I don't think they have to play those games.

As whiterabbit accurately stated: the options take the biggest depreciation hit.
Having said that, there may be some options you'll willingly take the hit on. I had anticipated a "liquidity event" back in '00 and ordered a Boxster S with 2 options: Litronic and sport chassis. I think Litronic headlights are probably standard now, and I'm not sure if there's an equivalent to the sport chassis option. In any case, avoid the PDK, 85% of cars have them and yours will be up against less competition when you sell...

I would say drive a PDK car before you dismiss them.

I have. PDK is ok but an expensive option. Manual is rarer and he'll have less competition when selling

My comment was directed at the potential buyer. Individual opinions may vary. It is just worth exploring and not dismissing without direct experience. I made that mistake for a couple years and then got the chance to flog one.

The thing with the PDK is you need to get the sports chrono package with it. That gives you two other programs to run the transmission in which are a lot more aggressive and more fun than the standard program.
Here is what I can tell you about the PDK. When it first came out in late 2008 as a 2009 MY 911 I was at the Porsche school. I have a reasonable amount of track time, mostly in my old e30 M3. I am no expert by any means but I am a decent weekend warrior. I drove the PDK car back to back vs the exact same car in manual and my lap times weren’t even close. I was much quicker in the PDK car. I also spend an extended period of time in a 09 carrera S PDK with sports Chrono and its really fun. I also commuted in it and slogging along in stop and go freeway traffic is much nicer than doing the 1-2, 2-1, 1-2, 2-1 and so on shuffle.

Good going techweenie. To me its also about value and comparing cars at the level you can afford. I am good with a Boxster or Cayman at base price but have seen many with 25k plus of options. That puts them up against different opposition for your dollar. I would rather a base no option 911 than a Cayman loaded up with options for similar prices which as discussed don't really add much to the experience and cause the car to depreciate much quicker.
Funnily enough I was looking at buying a new M4 and the dealer has a bunch of 435i's in stock for more than a base M4. I would rather order the base M4 (6 weeks)and get a much better and less depreciation than get instant gratification on the lot

If one is concerned about depreciation I suggest looking at CPO used cars. Let someone else take the big hit.

Thanks to everybody for the responses. My original plan was to get a 2003-2004 Boxster. A family friend has a 09 Cayman S, and she had a $5000 repair bill last year, and a $1500 last month, both engine problems. This scared my wife, and she said maybe we should just save up for a new Boxster/Cayman, and not have those problems. The CPO gives us that same peace of mind for the 3 years of the warranty, but then we don't have as much choice in color and options, while getting a new car we could get any color we wanted (much bigger deal to my wife than me)
So, get a CPO and save, or get a new car and pick the color and options, but take the big initial depreciation hit? |
