Another good thing about Durabilt is their turnaround time is really fast, and they are honest with absolutely no BS.
They rebuilt mine in less than a week... The other place I had rebuild it before that took 3 months, and both the hot and cold side piston ring seals leaked oil again after approximately 1100 street miles. |

Ultimate
I have to admit Kevin at Ultimate came through for me in the end... but only after 15 very frustrating phone calls and what seemed like a 6 months turn around.
Kevin will tell you... I'm the best and the busiest... which may be true but if you want to get your turbo back on the road anytime soon I would say go some place else. I dont think Kevin would argue with what I'm telling you. Bryan

There are 3 UK built high speed computerized VSR turbo cartridge balancing machines in the USA.
Durabilt, Turbonetics, and someplace else have them. They are extrememly expensive and UMW does not have or use one. There are other lesser balancing machines but you will get the longest lasting most reliable factory quality rebuild from a place that has the VSR machine. Mk3 Balancing Machine |

or you can try rebuilding it yourself (providing you keep the same orientation of the compressor wheel/nut to the shaft).

Cant recommend a place to go, but can recommend where NOT to go. I wouldnt deal with UMW. My first hand experience is consistent with all of the negative feedback previously listed.

Thierry, the fueling and boost curve you are using on your CIS engine is very atypical. I cannot speak for Kevin but I believe the issue is added liability. As you know, fueling becomes quite critical once you strap on a turbo capable of holding 1.2+bar past redline. Any malfunction of the boost controller at such extreme boost pressures while using CIS could have disastrous effects. That is likely where the suggestion to go EFI originated.
Ed - I can get you rebuild pricing and lead time if interested.

DURABUILT. As previously noted there are 3 UK built high speed computerized VSR turbo cartridge balancing machines in the USA. Beyond that point, I sent them my special turbo that was modified ( no ID plate ) similar to 956 specification by Kremer in 1984. According to Bob @ Durabuilt it was modified to be very similar to the later turbos Porsche used so it required a shoot from the hip guesstimate for parts required. Also from his inspection he felt that it was well suited for what was done to the Kremer tweaked CIS, which dynoed @ 480 FWHP before emissions and exhaust were added, to pass 1985 EPA requirements. When I asked about possible improvements he would not advise anything changed and charged only a standard rebuild price . He successfully sourced the correct rebuild parts on the second try and we got it back in less than 2 weeks. Bottom line, I would say these guys really know their stuff and I had no problem with communication.
