Its a car, of course its a train wreck at first. Im not a "look at the bright side" type of guy but consider this. When you get the car back you will have rock solid, big power mechanicals. There is allot of upside in knowing that for a fact rather than hoping a motor has allot of life in it or agonizing about if/when/what you should mod.

I can take you out in my car and then you can gloat about how much faster yours is....

Well it sure as HELL ain't Sahara Diamond Metallic

That was evident after going to the local Wesco (paint supplier) and looking in their Glasurit book. What was also apparent is that the color of my car is assuredly not a factory Glasurit color. Every color we've talked about was in that book and my car isn't one of them. But I am getting ahead of myself...

I went to the shop today where the car is currently getting the old nip n’ tuck. The progress is slow and steady with the heads and cylinders all packed up to go out to the respective wizards who will make them all new again. Since the Ruf wheels aren’t staying with the car, I brought something that would suffice for rolling the car around until something else comes along. Original Weissach edition 7”/8” Fuchs with 21mm spacers look good, no?

I’d determined while at the shop, I really needed to get my hands on a body panel with some original color on it to continue research on what color this car came from the factory in. To this point, all I’d come up against are dead ends. After a false start with the gas cap, which appears to be the only part on the car that was properly removed and painted, we moved onto the rear bumper. I noticed that there was just a little bit of color peeking out next to the bumperettes and once removed, for the first time I was thankful for the laziness of the idiots that painted this car. We removed the passenger side valence and voila, a part I could walk away with:

Back to the trip to the paint shop. The patch of paint I had was too small to fit onto the spectrograph, so I had to try to do the color match the old fashioned way...color chips. There was nothing – and I mean NOTHING – in the Glasurit book. This color is not Kiln Red or Sahara Diamond Metallic.

The paint guy and I ended up digging through the DuPont color wheel book, looking for a group of colors that were close. After an hour of digging, We’d found a group of colors that provided an actionable starting points from which to triangulate a formula to try to match the color, the right metallic reflective color and grain, and the right pearl. I mashed up the formulas taking the color of one and the metallic and pearl of another to give us a starting point…and NAILED IT, first try. The color came out perfect - even the grain and reflected color spectrum is right. Ali at Wesco said it NEVER happens. 1 in a million. Lucky.

The color…no name, unless I give it one, and it is an amazing color. It comes out as a metallic/pearl whose color looks like ’74 Carmine Red under some light, and ’73 Aubergine under other light. One thing is for sure, this is a VERY hard color to capture accurately in photos.

I still have some hope that I will hear back from Porsche Germany on the color through my previously mentioned contact. But at least I can now take comfort in the fact that I can repaint the car in its original, and amazing, color.

Wasn't even close. I had the entire Glasurit and Sikkens (Lesonal) 911 book with every Porsche 911 color ever officially released by the factory and it wasn't even close. Not to mention Ruby was available for the 911 until after 1979, in '83.

Admittedly, there was a 356 Ruby Red, but that color is flat, not metallic and actually didn't look that far back.

From the research I was able to get done through some contacts inside Porsche, here is the official color code for my car:
Z5 - Sienna Metallic
Code - Herbol 436


I love brown, to be sure. But THREE brown 911s...really? :eek:

So now for the full story.

It just didn't add up. The color was so wacky and just didn't match anything in the book. I mean, they're are plenty of stories of people ordering a seemingly random GM color so their 911 would match their Vette... But this color wasn't even on the reservation with the books.

Fast forward to last week and I've matched the color that is hiding under the horrible black paint perfectly. I'm stoked because, DAMN, this color is both interesting and uncommon. Yet with the German precision of the Porsche factory coming to life after the August holiday, my world twists sideways as the email comes in: The original color, as we know now, is Sienna Brown Metallic.

Irony side, a cool f#ck!n6 color, no doubt, but just NOT the color I'd seen hiding under the nether regions of the car. Back in the presence of the 930, I figured I'd determine what the he!! was going on, one way or another. The good news, it didn't take long.

The short story, my car has been resprayed twice: Once by an extremely competent and detail oriented artisan and once by Helen Keller's drunk, quadriplegic brother.

The first respray was only evident after scraping a bit in the corners of the engine bay. There in those corners, where the first bits of the burgundy paint had pulled away, was Sienna Brown Metallic. The first respray was so good, it had fooled me, my mechanic buddy and several others.

The second respray, you know the story...a half stop on the crap-o-meter above the Krylon bomb can special. This is my motivation to respray. This car will be amazing again and as soon as absolutely effing possible.

To divert for a bit, the motor it's coming together, at least from a parts perspective. For those of you who don't want to leave it ask together from various posted, here's the spec:
  • 98mm 8.5:1 JEs, ceramic coated
  • 38mm I/E ports
  • 993 knock bars installed to cylinder heads
  • Twin plugged heads and dizzy
  • Leask WUR
  • Euro ('79) fuel head
  • 3.2 Carrera HEs (38mm ID)
  • K27-7006
  • Zork Tube
  • Andial Intercooler
  • DC15 (Sport SC) cams
  • Electromotive Tec3r (spark/knock/boost, but NOT fuel]

First, to the EFI guys...no offense, but I want to stay with the CIS. I know most of you will call me an idiot for not walking the last yard to full EFI, but whatever...I want to keep CIS for the old school look and flavor. Plus it was just sitting on the shelf, so why not use it?

With that caveat out of the way, how facking cool it's CIS with full TPS, O2, boost, knock and spark??? Any guesses on where this ends up power wise?

Speaking of old school look and flavor, I figured out how to keep the stock injector blocks and still bore them out to 38mm, with zero risk of ever blowing them out. More on that little project soon! :D

Did some color sleuthing at the local purveyor of paint and supplies today. Color code 436, as other research I've done suggests, is a bit mysterious. What I have been able to glean:

Color code 436 pulls up three different name variants. These name variants are inconsistent, as the names vary even within the Glasurit, and PPG vernacular. These names are:
  • SarahDiamant Metallic (Sahara Diamond Metallic)
  • Burgundy Metallic
  • Sienna Brown Metallic

Below are the resources I have been able to gather regarding the color. The wrinkle is that the original manufacturer for the color Sienna Brown Metallic is Herbol, while Sahara Diamond Metallic is Glasurit. Why the different names? Was it a trademark related issue? Perhaps these details are lost to history.

It seems that Sahara Diamond Metallic and Sienna Brown Metallic are the same color. Without side by side comparison of original samples, it is going to be hard to know for sure. Looks like I'll need to spend some time carefully wet sanding on my car to see what I can expose...
