OEM Wire Harness

This harness has seen it's better days! All I need an oem plug type harness to do is run the alternator, starter and dash gauges.

I'll have a new harness coming with the new engine management system, so what's the best way to build a new harness just to run these items? Anybody else have to do the same?

Thanks,
RC

If you are familiar with using a soldering gun and desolderer, I'd recommend just re-using the bulkhead connector and building up your own harness up from there. If you google around a little I'm sure you can find some docs on which pin runs what. In addition to alternator, gauge and CDI related stuff, some of that stuff ran a subpanel which I think takes care of the tail lights, not to mention there is also a fuel relay circuit hiding in there as well.

more progress

I figured that harness would be a bear...I'll fix it up as I go...

I painted and installed the alternator air distributor. Modified the shroud to fit carrera intake and put on heater block off plates

Looks great Rick. Interesting bit of related trivia, I got that manifold from Dave White, just in case anyone remembers who that is.

I found this on JB Racing's site:

"Dave White Racing - Full service Porsche race and street shop in Tampa, FL. Specializes in Porsche race car preparation and fabrication...from building your dream race car and/or honing your racing skills, to re-building a broken dream - DWR knows what it takes to win. "

I think you might need to get the rear engine trim in there before you get all the hardware and engine mount bolted on for good.

In addition to his shop Dave White was also a renouned porsche race team owner and driver who got a few wins in the Daytona 24 Hour race as well.

Thanks Tony, I put both pieces of rear trim on last night and pulled the starter & backup switch wires through their hole in the tin

Dave White was totally no let me rephrase that - vehemently against anybody that DIY. He charged a buddy of mine $8K to rebuild his G-50 - and that did not include new gears. - He tried to talk him out of his LSD G-50 three different times - said it was not necessary in a cabriolet.

When my friend asked me to go to the shop with him - to help him with questions about the rebuild - his response was - who the hell are you I don't have to talk to you.

Sounds like he was hiding something if he wouldn't talk to you about the work he was doing for your buddy. I've found that the real 911 gurus are more then happy to share their vast knowledge. Without these types of folks we'd have to re-invent the wheel with every little project and I for one wouldn't be able to do this kinda build without them! I'd like to say thanks to all you 911 gurus out there...you know who you are

Also, 8K seems excessive to me unless it included labor and parts assuming the tranny just needed refreshing. I just did a refresh and my parts alone were around $4K.

I'd believe it, Dave was certainly a bit of a curmudgeon by the time I met him almost a decade ago.

Because of my porsche tech background and connection to one of his racing buddies I was able to get in his good graces though.

He let me have the manifold and hardware for about $300 back when you were lucky to find just the intake for double that.

That was a good deal cuz you still can't find one for that these days

Dump Tubes

I've installed two 38mm dump tubes angled up and outta the way, but plan to direct them down towards the ground after the motor is installed...How short is too short for wastegate dump tubes?

My concern due to them being behind the tires is large amounts of dirt and moisture getting thrown into the valves.

IMHO they can be as short as you want them to be as long as they do not allow that to happen.

turbo drip tank fitment

I installed the exhaust so I could check the turbo oil drip tank fitment. It's crowded going to the left so I'm thinking of right hand orientation. Only prob with that is longer scavenger pump line.

Would the extra foot of line hurt my scavenger pump's ability to pull oil outta the drip tank?

Might want to take it to a metal worker with a tig who can reorient the flange to can arrangment to put it right where you need it. Technically the extra line shouldn't hurt since it will just be full of oil and air like the bottom of the catch can is, but the less flexible line running around hot exhaust plumbing, the better.
