What is the consensus on mandatory vaccines?
Just curious what folks think.
I suppose this could end up going to basement, but thought it was worth a shot.

Quick question, are we talking the government making it mandatory for everyone or employers making it mandatory for workers. I'd answer each in a different way.

They are legal with specific exemptions.

Wow! They require the flu shot for kids to attend public schools?
Sure enough! https://www.mass.gov/news/flu-vaccine-now-required-for-all-massachusetts-school-students-enrolled-in-child-care-pre#:~:text=BOSTON%20%E2%80%94%20State%20public%20 health%20officials,12%2C%20and%20colleges%20and%20 universities. Seems a little crazy...

Dallas ISD makes it mandatory for students to get a whole laundry list of vaccines or they cannot attend (is always a huge headache for the school nurses and administrators during the first few weeks of school), but I don't think COVID vaccines have made it on that list as of yet (not sure about that, however). I assume that the same applies to many/most school districts throughout the country? In other words, at least for yutes who attend school, mandatory has been a norm for a long time.
Personally, I don't like the sound of "mandatory" for anything, even though I typically comply with mandates. Ha ha - Shaun was posting the same time I was writing the above. ![]() |

I voted "yes" but I mean that "yes" in certain situations: private and public employers, common carriers, and property owners should be able to require vaccination if they choose to, and government should be able to mandate it for particularly sensitive roles (military, healthcare, etc).
If someone isn't in those sensitive roles and is fine with boycotting the employers, transportation and venues that have decided to require vaccination, then I think they should be able to take their chances. Of course, I also think that persons who refuse vaccination should not receive publicly funded healthcare or disability benefits if they get ill.

We will reach immunity one way or another. Either through vaccination or "natural" immunity.

As some politician said today I think, it's time for the non-vaccinated to stay home so the rest of us can go about our daily lives.
I agree with jyl, if you're not vaccinated you shouldn't get publicly funded help fighting the disease now.

Another quick question along the same lines - are we talking FDA approved vaccines or experimental vaccines? I'd answer each in a different way.

Coercion such as that is not a good idea, in my opinion. The decision to be stuck with a new medical substance should be left to each person faced with getting poked (or his or her parents/guardians, if the person is a minor). It took me months of internal struggle, and getting a recommendation from a doctor that I trust, for me decide to hit it - had I been looking at some sort of governmental force or coercion, I would feel much more bitter about the whole thing. |

While it does not appear to matter to those pushing the mandates, it matters a great deal to those on the receiving end. I'll admit to not having followed this very closely, but I do seem to recall the courts siding with those on the receiving end who maintain that there can be no mandate to receive an as of yet unapproved vaccine. Didn't Marine Corps recruits win such a case?

US military has yet to make the covid vaccine mandatory. I know of no Marine case. List of current vaccine requirements for military. https://www.health.mil/Military-Health-Topics/Health-Readiness/Immunization-Healthcare/Vaccine-Recommendations/Vaccine-Recommendations-by-AOR |

They should not be mandatory by the government. A privete business can require whatever they want, but they must also provide a reasonable accommodations for their employees, especially those with disabilities.
That said, I also believe that people should realize now that vaccines are readily available to everyone over 12, they have no excuse. What I mean is that if they get COVID-19, it's on them, and no one else can be blamed. People have a right to chose not be be vaccinated, but with that right comes a responsibility to accept their fate whatever may happen.
