That was actually the point... to have it look like the IMSA logo, but if you look closely it's not.

You know... covert.

"Clandestine" if you will.

Same with the IROC style.

Stuff looks great, lfot. I'll take a sticker, one of those cute teddy bears, and, um a classic thong.

You were spot on the 1st time. The 'IMSA' logo works best.
However, the Gulf orange/blue is very unique.
Hmmm, which one to order. Dave B., Derek, Jeff which one will be the 'official' logo?

Collect the whole set! Like Hot Wheels one is not enough. Besides by next week a new model will probably be out.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the compliments on the recently posted screenshot (Turn 6) of the Riverside sim track I'm building. I'm just about ready to produce the video....a day or two later than I thought. Ended up having some problems with the trailer graphics that I didn't expect.

Re: Snack stand position at Turn 6.........
Actually, that's not even the right building type. It's just a placemarker for now as I haven't found a picture of the snack stand(s)......any of them.....at least not close enough of a shot that I can model them. I know they are all the same....and pretty much their various locations around the track. That building I'm using as a placemarker for the snack stand in T-6is almost twice the size of what the snack stands should be. That's probably why it seems too close to the fence. Also, the 3D video cameras used by these 3D world modeling programs has a very wide angle lens effect.....which compresses distances a lot. I have place two objects exactly 100 feet apart (using an in-world measuring device) and when I look at it from the simulated race car cockpit they look about 40 feet apart. I guess I've gotten used to that now?

Re: Posting screenshot (Kurt)............
Be my guest! Especially if it produces more photos of RIR (late 80's preferred for now).

Another Forum for Riverside?..............
I heard there is a Forum on Yahoo that has a bunch of guys who were all SCCA turn workers at RIR. Do any of you guys know of this Yahoo forum by any chance?

Question for the braintrusts behind the Mulholland stickers..................
If you guys could go back in time and choose a sign for the "MIRRC" and a location at the old Riverside Raceway.....to put up for all the big events......where would you put it and what would it look like? Or what do you want it to look like because I have the "time machine" to put it on the track! LOL....

Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving.......and thanks again for the kind words on the RIR sim track.

Regards,

Tom Pabst

PS: What kind of lap times would the Winston Cup stockcars back in 1988 have done on the RIR full course? I have to adjust the speed of the AI cars for this video.....not sure what kind of lap times they would have run on that course configuration. Any ideas?

I'm the one behind the MIRRC idea, but I'll leave Riverside sign placement up to the community here since I was never actually there.

It would be super cool though!

Hi Tom,
You are most welcome, keep up the excellent work.

I believe that to be fair to the other groups, Mulholland groups should be represented by the times they were in. For example, if the track layout is from 1968 the signs should read MRA, if the track layout is from 1972 the signs should say CRE, if the track layout is from 1975 the signs should read TVL, if the track is from 1978 the signs should read ACR and so forth. The MIRRC signs of Dereks would fit in with present day perfectly since that's where they are from.

Many of the CRE members were either SCCA turn workers or racers and should be able to assist you with the snack bars and other details.

Keep up the good work...and congratulations on your project.

Best regards, Chris Banning

Derek since you have designed the Logo for the present-day group of Mulholland appreciators, it will come to represent your group in the second edition of the Mulholland Experience. We needed a formal name again for a Mulholland group instead of some un-named one, thank you.

Please help make the roster accurate for posterity. It includes yourself(Derek), Radu, SloDave, Kevin, Dave B.?, Jeff H., and some more, please elaborate.

As I have said to Radu, we need just a few stories to talk about in your present day group. If we can list them here in this forum, folks will really like to hear them and it will make it easier to incorporate into the book. I am occupied with making the CRE story more complete with Victor's assistance. Thank you Victor. This will take some more time to complete.

I thought it might be relevant to post an interview transcript, one of many that was created to make The Mulholland Experience. Anyone interested? Just a thought.

Derek, you were one of my harshest critics in the beginning of this thread(concerning The Mulholland Experience). I will make sure not to disappoint you(or any CRE, MRA or TVL members) with the second edition and it's improvements.

Uhmm... yeah. Sorry about that. Looking back at the beginning of this thread, and after knowing you for a while, I kind of feel like a jerk. But it was just criticism and nothing personal, of course. I'm sure the next version will read like Tolstoy.

No problem Derek. You were correct that some parts really needed fixing, and they have been fixed so that there are no readability issues any longer. There will be many more photos, the time-line will be nailed down properly, and there won't be any extraneous confusing dates floating around the various chapters any longer. This along with a more complete history of CRE, the MRA, TVL and the present day MIRRC will make The Mulholland Experience lacking very little in relevant information. I hope to please everybody possible with the second edition of the book. I still have some work ahead before it's possible to be thinking about formatting and printing. Perhaps 3 or 4 months. Not 2 weeks Jeff! I will continue to endeavor to do an excellent job on this book about Mulholland racing history. Thanks for your support.

I was really looking forward to your book until I read the reviews. I am glad you are working on it and I am once again looking forward to purchasing and reading the latest edition.

I have tracked down some 70's photos (slides, actually) at RIR and will see them this weekend. However, look at what Road & Track showed as an artist conception of what RIR was to look like back in 1960

SSB,
I'd love to see the content of those RIR slides but don't know exactly how to do that easily. It would depend on the era they represent to know if they'd be helpful during this first track build I'm currently working on. But just for the record, I will also be building earlier era tracks I just don't know when or what configuration as that work would be a year or two away at the moment. I would guess I'll also be influenced by the quantity/era of photos I have acquired? But for now, I'm building the "final chapter" era (late 1980's) in all three configurations, beginning with the full GT or sports car course as that can then be reduced to the other two configurations (SCCA and NASCAR) with some alterations in the TSO's (track side objects). The older era versions will likely need to be "from scratch" configurations as the track was so different than the later eras (esses, no dog leg, etc.).

Ron Cortez showed me an old architect's drawing of the track that shows it almost identical to the one you posted above from Road & Track. So, I was not surprised at the one you posted. Don't know why that full track was never built, however. Probably a financing issue or something.

I do have to say to all of you that as I have been working on this simulated track over the last few months, I have come to develop quite a disdain for whom ever was responsible for making the decision(s) that resulted in Riverside Raceway being torn down! I loved this track even though I only raced there a few times before it was gone. I've been watching racing on the track since it was built. I have thousands of laps for certain, on the various simulated versions of the track that have been created in the last ten years. Even though they were not all that accurate, they were still the best road courses of their time (in the simulator world). There have been a few late nights recently where I have almost been brought to tears that this place no longer exists! It is a travesty. It would never happen today as racing has become one of the biggest sports (literally) in the world. With the few tracks worldwide with anything remotely like the "history of Riverside" - those tracks are protected from a "Riverside fate." It was like someone deciding to tear down Yankee stadium to build a new parking structure! Good God, whomever did this to Riverside was a complete idiot! I guess it doesn't help my attitude towards this person when I come to work every day to race track of a similar era (Sears Point) and see this absolutely killer racing complex that exists today as "Infineon Raceway." Like Riverside, Sears Point was/is a driver's track, no doubts. Impossible to do even one single "perfect" lap! When you race hear, you better race the track and not your competitors. That's the mark of all the great tracks in the world and Riverside was probably one of the first (certainly the first in the USA) of that caliber. Today, Sears Point earns in one weekend more than $50million (from the NASCAR race). That's ten times it's annual operating budget and means the other major events revenue drops almost directly to the bottom line (AMA, NHRA, Grand Am, ALMS). Dam it. If not for an idiot we'd all be watching probably at least two races at Riverside every year (NASCAR), and probably one of them in "The Chase!"

Oh well. The best "next thing" I can do is build a good simulated version of Riverside.....best I know how to do, that is.

Take care,

Tom Pabst
