Mulholland related.

Mother's Day at Mulholland West:

Ran into Noel and his GT3 this weekend. Nice surprise at the top. There was also a Scooter gang up there, Vespas. That must be fun.

Go to: www.themulhollandexperience.com

PM me if you want a digital copy of King of the Mountain, Mulholland Maniacs, The Mulholland TV special, LA week in Review on Mulholland, The Mulholland Fun Run, or the KOM documentary. I'll see if I can put all this on a DVD for everyone to enjoy.

One very important one was left out. It's the quote by Crazy Cal while he is racing his Vette thru Mulholland, where he said, "Speed is Time, Time is Speed". This is what John Hall and I would say to each other as kind of as a personal joke from the movie. LOL. King of the Mountain was based on the Thunder Road article by David Barry. The 1978 article had photos of our Porsche racecars and centered on Charley, myself, and John. It was a unique time in our lives, and Mulholland was enjoying an exciting rejuvination from the past days of the MRA, CRE, and the TVL groups. Back then on a Saturday night, you might see 50 or 60 cars parked in or near the Racecourse. It was the best of times.

Later, John used another quote from the end of the movie, the character Steve said something like, "Take it Cal, I don't want it anymore". This was just before Steve shut down and Cal drove his Corvette off of Mulholland in a firery crash (actually shot at Indian Dunes in Valencia). John used this quote after getting severely beat up by LAPD and had subsequently quit racing on Mulholland. I can't blame him for retiring, they threatened him with some pretty awful stuff after dragging him thru hellfire and brimstone. George M. also quit after getting brutally beaten and having his ribs broken while handcuffed hand over shoulder near Java. Remember it's on every car, "To Protect and to Serve". I'm sorry for being sarcastic, there are plenty of good police officers out there that get a bad rep from the actions of the mean officers. Every group of humans has it's share of good and bad.

By the way, there were others that learned from the above and quit Mulholland before ending poorly. Mark M. is a good example as are most members of the CRE who became involved in pro racing after Mulholland. I guess you could say that they were the smart ones, but I'm the wrong person to answer that question.
Dennis Hopper is still "drunk with the speed of his youth" god bless his soul!
I do think the license plate was cool on the Speedster........"REDLINE"

As summer approach's the custom builds seem to pop up in SoCal.

This one would go perfect with Bannings VW................

I bet those mounts will handle a 2180 no problem...

Great seeing you again, Jim...

I didn't hit you with any rocks when I peeled away? Didn't immediately check to see if you pulled in right behind me...

Porsche Crest Mulholland

Here is another nice letter from Robert Meents that I received a couple of days ago. I thought you might like to see his interest in Mulholland and this thread.

Mr. Banning;

Thank you for your response to my previous e-mail about the mulholland maniacs dvd. I have enjoyed each and every page of the pelican thread and though I do not have the same connection to mulholland that you do,I can assure you that I do share the same passion for Porsches and challenging canyon roads . Hello to each and every one of you. I would love to drive my 911 to L,A. to one of your future gatherings to meet you guys. I will continue to read the thread for a heads up. When you bring your RSR back out I would definitely like to see it ,if possible. Thank You again for your time.

Robert Meents

After shrouding the pump in bubble wrap, and putting into a box with syrofoam peanuts, I double boxed it.

Here's the second larger box.

The boxes are insulated from each other by more styrofoam peanuts.

At this point, I have been waiting to have enough time to send it out after talking again with Gus and Robert.
I must admit that I'm a little hesitant to let it out of my sight, just call me paranoid. Hence the delay.

Gus is at Pacific Fuel Injection and comes highly recommended. He is a pleasure to talk to and is very helpful.

Robert is at Fairchild Industries and is also a great man to repair the MFI pump. Robert's brother Jerry passed away some years ago. He used to run Jerry Fairchild Industries and was the best man to modify your MFI back in the 70's and 80's. Jerry himself modified my MFI pump for my 2.8 liter RSR motor back in 1976 and it always ran great until I couldn't start it regularly due to my house being on the ground from the '94 quake. MFI systems need to be started regularly, this is very important.

Jay Leno is a big fan of these aircraft and he was there at the Van Nuys Airport.

The next two photos are over my house on Mulholland. One time this plane passed over very low on one of it's runs.

Later I found out that they were giving rides at Van Nuys Airport for $125 on old bombers to benifit
the restoration and maintanance of the planes. It sounded very cool as it passed overhead.

Beginning photos courtesy Larry O'Rourke.

Chris, I'm not sure where you got the $125 number for a ride on the Aluminum Overcast, but it's actually $400 for a 20 minute ride. It's $175 to buy a flight jacket if you have flown in the plane.

John Hall's dad rented the plane for his family and it came out to $125 per person.

I remember seeing those planes flying around a few days (week?) ago. I would totally pay the $400 if I could sit in the belly turret!

For insurance reasons, the belly turret and tail gunner position is closed during flight. I don't think it is coming back this way and I think that this was the last 'tour' for the bomber. It is supposed to be retired to the EAA museum. However, you can smile from up front!

Not the same plane...
