A young inventor from Canada is currently seeking investors to manufacture his eye-catching creation. Frankly though, I believe 25mph is good enough for something which seems to be quite scary to ride. But then again, as Ben says, you need to learn to trust the Uno first. Can you blame me for thinking it'll make for a heart-pumping ride? Sure, the Uno has a couple of wheels, but they're right next to each other, creating an illusion of a unicycle. What's great about it being quite small though is that it's only 120 pounds, and you can actually carry it indoors to be recharged--a single charge is enough for 2.5 hours of transport. Let's just hope it's safe for actual usage if and when it's manufactured for public consumption.

The only video that will ever be seen on my laptop on Mulholland, is stuff that is directly related to Mulholland. That's the way it is, and there's more old Mulholland to see.

I think with age we have an advantage. On the other hand it makes good sense to get to know todays cops on Mulholland because it may help one day if an incident were to occur or at least a traffic stop . Seems a little ironic considering the past doesn't it?

I learned this with Harrison in the past. Last time I saw him I was (86-87?) parked at Grandstands right next to him for an hour and he didn't even get out the car. All I got was a hey head nod. I also think Harrison was a different kind of cop. If you gave him respect you got a little slack in return..not much. Todays cops are different so my take is better off on the good side than the bad.

Then again it might just backfire and we are all going to the slammer, cars impounded and cited for various 22350's.

Or we all carry camera's and claim we are part of a documentary team. There is a 99% truth to this. We have the website to back it up.

We'll do better with a carrot (doughnut) instead of a stick. If we contact the cops and inform them that we are the Advanced Nieghborhood Patrol (The ANP) and tell them that we do a quick weekly patrol on Mulholland looking for people who are in need, maybe we can get to know them on a friendly basis. If we can really help someone (and I would like to) who has crashed or is being mugged at Deadmans, we will have credibility, and we will be known as crime fighters in this big city (what a switch). We might even make the evening news.

Stranger things have happened.

1974 Chevy Surfer Van and he is the original owner.
Frenched lamps, ghost flames and a "Custom Cruser Roof" grafted on top. Steve's work is first rate. Old school but really was a blast from the past.

When I walked in the shop the Van blocked the view of this special coupe. I went past the Van and it stopped me dead in my tracks. Whoaaa!


Battery went dead in the camera and I was unable to shoot the other toys in the attic. A collection of rare race boats in the next room.

That's a cool video about Corvairs. I especially liked the 20 mile drive in the stream channel and the nice rollover at speed (was there someone in there?).

"The Corvair took the punishment and asked for more", they said.

Did the Corvair get here before the Baja Bug? It looks like the video might be implying that, and why didn't they try to rollover a Corvair Rampside?

Porsche Crest Letter and Update

Update for Carrera: Beginning to polish wheels back to original luster, will post photos later. Next job is to refurbish the 906 braking system installed on the Carrera.

Update for second edition of The Mulholland Experience: Rich Adams is still editing the first edition text. I am reformatting the contents and structure, and am doing more interviews to add to the information. For example, Tony Cottrell and I had a fantastic interview on March 27th, he is Jeremy's older brother and the founder of TVL. Kurt Oblinger, who is also a founding member of TVL finished the story of that racing group on April 13th in his interview. Jeff Dyer has completed the story for the SCCRA. They were the group that ran their cars for the filming of King of the Mountain and were the last named group on Mulholland until Derek's group called the MIRRC was created last year.


Below is a letter that I got yesterday from a Robert Meents. I thought that some of you might like to see it.

Mr. Banning;

My name is Robert Meents and I live in Tucson Az. I was reading the pelican parts thread about your RSR Carrera and could'nt believe it. I have been a Porsche fanatic since I was a teen and now I am 44 years old. Ever since I saw King of the Mountain in the early eighties,I wondered if this racing really existed on mulholland. I was blown away by the pelican thread as it confirmed my question after all of these years. Here in Tucson at about the same time as KOM,my friends and I would run up and down what is called Catalina highway. If you have ever seen the movie" The Wraith", the Catalina highway is where this was filmed. A camera truck went over the side during filming and killed a camera man.There is a memorial in the credits at the end of the movie. I used to run a 1971 datsun 240z up there and we had a lot of fun. We did'nt have a name,we just showed up and raced. I now own a 1980 porsche 911 sc but they don't run on catalina anymore. I wanted to give you a little history of my corner of the world and let all of you mulholland people know about us. I am waiting for your revised book to come out and I would love to come to L.A.to see your car when it comes back to life. I would like to purchase a copy of the DVD that you made about Mulholland,"Mulholland Maniacs" .If you could do that for me I would greatly appreciate it. Let me know how much and the shipping cost. I have been wanting to write to you guys and say hello for a while now but I did'nt think this belonged on the pelican thread. If you would like to post this e-mail ,you are more than welcome to. Porsche Crest King of the Mountain filming

This is a production still from the making of King of the Mountain.
In the last post I mentioned Jeff Dyer of the SCCRA and how his group were the extras for the making of the movie. This shot was taken at the Griffith Park shooting location in 1980. Jeff is one of the guys at the Van in the right hand corner.

Those are some of the best quotes from the movie King of the Mountain Jeff.

One very important one was left out. It's the quote by Crazy Cal while he is racing his Vette thru Mulholland, where he said, "Speed is Time, Time is Speed". This is what John Hall and I would say to each other as kind of as a personal joke from the movie. LOL. King of the Mountain was based on the Thunder Road article by David Barry. The 1978 article had photos of our Porsche racecars and centered on Charley, myself, and John. It was a unique time in our lives, and Mulholland was enjoying an exciting rejuvination from the past days of the MRA, CRE, and the TVL groups. Back then on a Saturday night, you might see 50 or 60 cars parked in or near the Racecourse. It was the best of times.

Later, John used another quote from the end of the movie, the character Steve said something like, "Take it Cal, I don't want it anymore". This was just before Steve shut down and Cal drove his Corvette off of Mulholland in a firery crash (actually shot at Indian Dunes in Valencia). John used this quote after getting severely beat up by LAPD and had subsequently quit racing on Mulholland. I can't blame him for retiring, they threatened him with some pretty awful stuff after dragging him thru hellfire and brimstone. George M. also quit after getting brutally beaten and having his ribs broken while handcuffed hand over shoulder near Java. Remember it's on every car, "To Protect and to Serve". I'm sorry for being sarcastic, there are plenty of good police officers out there that get a bad rep from the actions of the mean officers. Every group of humans has it's share of good and bad.

By the way, there were others that learned from the above and quit Mulholland before ending poorly. Mark M. is a good example as are most members of the CRE who became involved in pro racing after Mulholland. I guess you could say that they were the smart ones, but I'm the wrong person to answer that question.
