Those photos of Deadmans reminds me of driving to work from the Valley to Hollywood many many years ago.
I had this turbo 4 Speedster with disk brakes and fat tires and over 200 HP back then. I knew the road well. Came up behind a quite new 911 with a "dentist" driving it. He was trying to go fast, but was all over the road with brake lights at apexes etc... Going eastboung into deadman's I could see far enough ahead in those twisties going into the turn that I pulled out to pass him before going into deadmans ..........well my plan was just to head fake him and hit the brakes hard and duck in behind him at the last possible moment. Well it worked! I got next to him, he noticed me. I hit the brakes hard and tucked in behind and I kept hard on the brakes so I would have lots of room if anything went wrong. And wrong it did. I guess the "dentist" hit the brakes hard when he realized there was no more road and looped it. We were lucky no one was coming the other way. It was like 8:30AM midweek. He went off backwards in a cloud of dust. I went around him and got out of there. What a dumb move that was on my part.......just pure luck kept the "dentist" from getting hurt. I always kept that in mind with all the commuting miles I put on Mulholland! I now live on Mulholland many many miles west of deadmans......late at night I still hear guys having fun out there....... I have fun out there too. I have too many motorcycle riding scars to be dumbly brave. But rarely drive that section of Mulholland this thread is about. I go easy and drive with lots of lights on my 911 I know the roads, but that guy coming the other way may not and he better not be on my side of the yellow. Ah Mulholland......some should do a documentary about the road.....would be fun with on-boards.

Hey all,
Dlague's story reminds me of one of one of my own. Late in '86 I bought a '77 gmc jimmy (aka k5 blazer) in preporation for spending the winter ski bumming in mammoth. On the way home up the 405 I saw the mul offramp and thought to myself, hmm what better way to get a feel for my new ride. So of I went eastbound and before you know it I came upon a "dentist" of my own driving a brand new, still with dealer plates 911 cabriolet with a very hot blonde in the passenger seat. Well, aparently the "dentist" didn't apreciate being hounded through the twisties by some comener in a 4x4 truck or maybe he was just trying to show off to his girlfriend but whatever the case he took off, or tried to ;>) Imagine his suprise to look in his mirrors and find me still stuck to him like glue. This just made him try harder and like Dlague's "dentist" much squirely driving followed. Finally he scared himself a little to bad and braked going into the saddle. Predictably the tail started coming around on him but luckily he caught it. However that was all the opening I needed to go around the outside of him. I can only imagine how he was bragging to his girl before hand about how cool and fast his brand new porsche was only to be passed by some lunatic in a clapped out ten year old truck. Just goes to show, it's not the car it's the driver :>0 |

Two evenings ago, it started fine and idled.
However, when cold it has a difficult time revving up. Also one injector is still leaking. After it is fixed, I can let the car run for 15 minutes. The car needs to heat up to full temp and back a few tiimes. Injector cleaner also needs to be added as per the instructions from Robert Fairchild who rebuild the MFI pump. Another important project has taken up a lot of my time but it is near completion. I have looked on Ebay for competition seat belts and there is a lot to choose from. After seatbelts are in (finally after 32 years), I can drive it to the DMV. The DMV will require me to bring my Carrera to it's office for verification. I am claiming that the Carrera is a 1967 Porsche and not a 1976 Porsche and will ask for a Duplicate Title for that year. "67 or 76? Must be a typo Maam. Someone must have been on drugs (1976) when they issued that title for me". ![]() Just kidding, the car is out of the system and the VIN will not show up on their computer. I'll let you know if it works. THEN IT WILL BE SMOG EXEMPT! YES! p.s. the license plates that read, "MLHLND" are safely reserved on my El Camino and are itching to go back to where they belong, back to the Mulholland Carrera. Well Chris, (and the rest of you), I’m coming back to introduce myself here now that the excitement and suspense of getting the RSR started up has subsided somewhat.
I stumbled across this amazing thread in mid-August... probably doing some Googling. I read most of it in a week or so... skipped around a bit, too. Such great stories and memories... I wish I could have been there. At 57, I’m about the same age as some of you guys, and from my college years on, I’ve known about Mulholland and other “canyon racing” through reading Road & Track, Car & Driver, etc. I was always one who thought driving “the twisty bits” was much cooler and way more interesting and challenging than drag racing and NASCAR on the ovals. SCCA, IMSA, CanAm, and F1 were my favorites. The Blue Ridge Parkway is couple of hours from here up in the Great Smoky Mountains, and perhaps some of you have driven on it if you’ve been over this way to the runoffs at Road Atlanta. The Parkway has a few similarities to Mulholland... and I had some fun up there pushing the limits of a couple of Opels I had back in my 20’s and 30’s... ![]() ![]() ...but you guys had Mulholland right in your backyard and could run it any time you wanted to. I’m hugely jealous. LOL At least you all know how fortunate you were... that’s obvious from reading your posts. One day I’d like to get out that way and meet some of you and swap some stories... and ask a thousand questions. I saw KOTM in the theatre when it came out and enjoyed it. I know most of you have issues with it because I’ve read them here, but it was cool to get a taste of the hill on the big screen. A few years ago I found an old VHS ex-rental copy on half.com and it still plays well. One of my main gripes with the movie is that in a lot of the racing shots, when you look at the pavement, you can tell the cars aren’t really going that fast. I’m assuming that is because of liability issues and/or the fact that the camera car wasn’t set up to go very fast. It's been great getting to know you guys and enjoying the photos you post. One more thing... Chris, if a target date for the release of the 2nd edition of your book has been posted here, I missed it... when is that supposed to occur?

It's too bad that another part of Los Angeles' history is going to be bulldozed for another fast food restaurant or whatever. I spoke to the owner's representative for the Sportsman's Lodge and apparently the new owner doesn't want to disclose the future plans for the property. This scenario has happened over and over again thru the years. Quality replaced by convenience. Isn't it great? Sorry for the sarcasm guys, I just wish that I could show you all what we have lost in only the last 45 years (and alot more before that). It's really a shame. I will not re-print a second edition unless it is a book that I can be truly proud of. Unfortunately I strive to be a perfectionist so more time is needed. Also, I have been busy with fixing the Carrera and other important projects. Sometimes I wish that I could "freeze time" so that I could get more done. |

One idea I had; if there is a way to take the photo without the headlight and taillight trails obscuring the car so much, I think that would make a better shot. I even think a dusk or dawn shot would look great... with the car shown with no lights on, yet the street lights in the valley would still very visible.
