Porsche Crest Deadmans

A view looking west, back up the Racecourse from Deadmans.

Quite the Ladies man, my sister on the left, and my wife on the right...
Of course, we are talking about that famous Rumanian Racecar Driver and World Famous Artist, Radu!

There's nothing like seeing a Porsche Racecar on Mulholland.

The car looks poised to take on Mulholland at a moments notice.

We started to interview Radu and ask some super interesing questions.

Radu is naturally photogenic, as is his Porsche.

Here's what the front compartment of a full racecar should look like.

Porsche Crest Deadmans

Many drivers were watching the movie star getting interviewed. (the car of course)
They gave lots of thumbs up while driving by Deadmans.

A Ranger drove up and asked what we were doing, and I said we were filming a student film.
He said that we needed a filming permit from the office in Franklin Canyon.
He intently informed us that we were at a location called "Deadmans".
I thought it was awfully nice of him to inform us where we were, especially since Deadmans isn't on any city map.

Afterwards I thought that we could get a filming permit and have 50 cars show up at Deadmans some evening.
Might be fun on a regular basis.

However my sister told me that insurance is required and a Ranger is always present when filming.
We need a Ranger who loves Mini Coopers or something.

Porsche Crest Deadmans

After promising the Ranger that we were going to disperse, we went to Grandstands to finish some shots.

Here is the sunset from the Grandstands parking lot.

From here I can see home on the right side, second lower ridge.

Here is the view from the Fine overlook showing most of the Racecourse in the backround.
Radu and I did a impromtu interview hanging over the edge beyond the gaurdrail.

By the time we were finished, it was dark.
Karina wanted to get a shot of Radu leaving, going down the Racecourse in his Porsche.

After Radu held traffic for a moment, he blazed down the Racecourse just like the old days. It was incredible and inspiring.
You should have heard those 911 exhaust pipes echoing in the canyon below...memories....

Chris,
I think you were holding out on me this morning. Not a mention of what was really going on. Next time you are going to I.M.S. I know you really are up to something else.

Did we cross paths today without realizing? I had to run to Hollywood with a requisite detour on the way back.

Radu,
Whats up? Looking fit these days. Life must be good. I hope your run included incorking the electric exhaust bypass valves just for the sound effects.

actually the exhaust bypass valves were closed - in the street mode- as any responsible citizen would do.

I hate to always be asking this, but I'm getting error boxes on all these videos... please post URLs with them if possible.

Chris, I love that "A view looking West" shot from Deadman's... the lighting is fantastic. Kudos are due to your sister, I assume.

Question: I've read in here that a lot of guys running at night would run with their lights off so as to be able to see headlight beams of other cars coming from the opposite direction around blind corners. Did anyone ever run just yellow fogs on really dark nights for a slightly better view of the road surface while still being able to see the approaching cars' headlight beams?

Thanks for posting Radu.

We can all see now that although the Prius is economical, it really dosn't compete with non hybrid cars. Also the hybrid car creates a tremendous polution problem in manufacturing due to materials and transport of such materials. BAD, BAD, BAD!

We have been fooled, again.

So, if you believe that your hybrid is saving the world, think again.
It is in fact destroying the environment from it's component manufacturing materials development and transport of such materials.

Reminds me of an old movie called "Its a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World"

We the People...just keep getting fooled over and over again by big business. Yuk!

Thanks John, Karina chose the time of day for photography reasons. I took advantage of her choice of time and took that photo. I thought the lighting looked good too.

Actually, only a few of us would run without headlights, and only on rare occasions. The reason that we did this wasn't to see oncoming headlights, they are visible just fine with your own headlights on. The main reason we went without headlights was for checking skill and testing our knowledge of the road. Foglights would be cheating.
This was mainly for practice for when we HAD to go without lights to evade the helicopter, (we called Whirlypig).

John Hall (my best man, and best friend) was the "King" of "lights out racing". Trust me, you don't want to get into a car with John on a foggy night with no headlights, he drives by the bots dots in the center of Mulholland. lol

Something odd... Before the Ranger showed up at Deadmans, Radu said he saw an undercover car parking west a few hundred feet from our location. (Radu can elaborate on this if he wants to).

My sister told me that during Radu's interview at one point her wireless mic was disrupted by another nearby signal. This was minutes before the Ranger showed up to see what we were doing.

This made me ask myself a few questions;
Does the MRC have undercover cars on Mulholland?
If so, what is their purpose?
Are they aware of this thread?
Are they that "well organized" now that they track potential Mulholland activity thru the computer?

Even the possibility of this changes the game.

On a side note, my sister is completing another video that she will post to youtube, it's something that everyone will enjoy.

Note: the Ranger came from the EAST, not the west where the station is located.

I wouldn't say it's an impossibility.
Do a Google search for "Mulholland Racing" and see what comes up.

Movies
“King of the Mountain” was a fictional movie loosely based on actual Mulholland Drive racers, racing to be king of the hill. The 1981 movie include stars, Dennis Hopper, Harry Hamlin, Seymour Cassel and Dennis Haggerty.
The films Mulholland Dr. and Mulholland Falls were named after the road.
It is also nicknamed "Bad Boy Drive" due to its illustrious residents Jack Nicholson, Warren Beatty, Errol Flynn and Marlon Brando.
Television
In the 1950s TV show, "The Bob Cummings Show" (syndicated as "Love That Bob") playboy-photographer Bob frequently makes references to Mulholland Drive as the ultimate destination for himself and his date for the evening, almost always one of his many beautiful models. (For most of its history, Mulholland Drive was a notorious "parking spot" for illicit sex, due to its seclusion and scenic views of the San Fernando Valley, until the parking areas were blocked off in the early 1990s, allegedly because they constituted a fire hazard.)
Two first-season episodes of the real-time FOX drama 24 were filmed on location and set in part on Mulholland Drive.
Michael Knight's first ride behind the wheel of the Knight 2000 takes place along Mulholland Drive in the pilot episode of Knight Rider in 1982.
In the first season of the ABC drama, Brothers & Sisters, Kevin Walker portrayed by Matthew Rhys is taken up to Mullholland Drive by Chad (portrayed by Jason Lewis) where they share their first kiss.
Music and Art
In music, it is mentioned in Tom Petty's "Free Fallin'," R.E.M.'s "Electrolite," Felix Da Housecat's "Everyone Is Someone in L.A.", [311][1]'s "Random", Razorlight's "Los Angeles Waltz", Lamb of God's "Forgotten (Lost Angels)", Frank Black's "Ole Mulholland", Josh Ritter's "California," Poe's "Hey Pretty", LA Guns' "Rip and Tear", Jim's Big Ego's "Los Angeles."

Other
There is also a ride at Disneyland's California Adventure called "Mulholland Madness" (previously, "Mulholland Highway").

In the hot-rod-themed videogame Street Rod II, the player can challenge computer opponents to a mountain-side road race called Mulholland Drive, but the design of the track doesn't represent the actual road: it is randomized for each new game.

In Grand Theft Auto San Andreas (video-game) there is a place named Mulholland in the city of Los Santos, and a road representing Mulholland drive which is near the Vinewood sign representing the Hollywood lettering.

Local authorities and the turn of attitudes against street racing have since combined with overpopulation and thick traffic to effectively strangle away all the race activity, but the stories - particularly of the Chris Banning choptop Porsche RSR pictured above - live on, both in Banning’s recent book, “The Mulholland Experience,” and in a thread over at the Pelican Parts Porsche forum. A sample:

Charlie (RIP) was indeed pretty crazy. The more he drank, the faster he would drive- it was the weirdest NON - M.A.D.D. thing one could think of.

I had a mini cooper S with radials and was having some fun up there in the rain. Fancying myself as Paddy Hopkirk, another friend in his built up 510 (also on radials ) we’re having a great time. Out of nowhere we hear what sounded like the entire A Production grid at Riverside raceway. Yep, Charlie was on straight pipes and making a run…. on 13″ wide slicks no less. Uh, he went by us like we were tied to the proverbial pole. And even with some well timed drifts and more aggressive driving we were left in about 4 turns worth of road… in the rain.

The thread’s going strong at about 72 pages, and it’s not just about Porsches going up and down Mulholland. Makes for an entertaining read.

72 pages? That was a awhile ago. lol
