Just got my copy of Excellence

The article and photos were good I wish it were longer with more pictures.

Not bad at all. This is my favorite thread to check in on.

I'm glad the car is running it looks great!

Hey John,

Here's the pic that I worked so hard on... Other than a resize and a little sharpening, it's how it was taken. This was a very difficult shot. I'm actually not completely happy with it, but time was running out. It does have some room for PS help though.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1247902424.jpg

The Mulholland/stop sign that Chris posted, was the other pic.

The article was a good read. The article doesn't compare to actually being there today. Looking at all of the receipts in Chris' kitchen is priceless. My disappointment, was really do to the time between taking the pic and when the issue actually came out - especially the last couple of weeks. :)

Dave

P.S. I have other pix from Aspen - no Porsche content, that I very proud of and at least one is contest worthy.

Dave,

First let me express my apology for your images not making it into the article. I have to take an author's submission and entrust the visual part to my art director. Generally speaking, I think he makes good choices when it comes to what goes in an article. Upon seeing your pics, however, I will go back over this selection process.

That said, I can say that what looks great on a computer screen often falls flat on the printed page due to the fact that it is not back-lit. Also, dark shots have an iffy success rate, so while our art director likes moody and tries to get away with it from time to time, it is risky. The sign shot is wonderful (!), but I wonder if it was left out due to continuity? I'll speak with him and find out more.

In the future, though -- never hesitate to call or email me directly! And, again: I love the shots you've posted.

Crap, just lost everything I just typed...

Peter,

I sent an email to you last night. No need to apologize, I fully understand! My mind had months to make up the article in my head :). Then the issue is 'out', but isn't. Oh the waiting! Then, Chris buys the only 6 issues in the Valley! It's all good.

I thank you for the opportunity! It was a good lesson - very difficult to boot! Revisiting the pic the other day, I think I know how to get the lights to appear off edge.

I'm still waiting, I went to Borders and Barnes and Noble this past Sat, and no joy. I guess B&N could have gotten it today or yesterday. I'll check by the weekend at least. The waiting is killing me.

Concours d'Elegance

It appears that other pressing matters are going to keep August too busy to attend Monterey this year unfortunately.

However we just signed up the the PCA Los Angeles Concours d'Elegance at Greystone.
This will be the first time the Carrera will be shown at a public venue. It should be fun. Bring your Porsche and show it off, it's summer time.

Information below;

Yes.... it is time for the PCA Los Angeles Region Zone 8 Concours d'Elegance!!!

This year.... it is being held at the Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills. Entering your vehicle will put you in select company with some rare and exquisite Porsches already entered. The early entry date ($50) is fast approaching - August 1, 2009. We encourage anyone thinking of entering to do so by this date. We don't want to have to turn any member's Porsches away - but when we fill up, we fill up. So.....go to our website and download details and an entry form, and get in the mail!!

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1248283854.jpg

The Concours will also be a spectacular way to spend part of your Sunday morning just looking at cars, talking with fellow enthusiasts, and having lunch with everyone.

We are all looking forward to having a great time at Greystone!! Be there...!

rfloz 07-22-2009 06:09 PM

Well, that sucks!

It looks like the Concours is August 30, the same date as a PCA/OCR Auto-Cross at El Toro. I need to attend the latter as I am (just barely) in the running for a year-end trophy.

Oh well, at least Excellence finally arrived in the mail. Good article with good photos, but I agree some of the shots shown here would have enhanced it.

Chris -

Any other plans to have the car appear in public? I really would like to see it up close. If you are ever going to air it out on Mulholland, please do some kind of notice for the locals. I think someone mentioned an e-mail list. If that happens, please add "rfloz at roadrunner dot com" to the list.

Brillo 07-22-2009 06:49 PM

I enjoy wandering the grounds of Greystone. This will be a neat setting to see the Mulholland Porsche

Jeff Hail 07-22-2009 09:11 PM

Its hot out. We need to go for a drive and refreshments. My god when was the last time I posted?

Finally received my copy of Excellence. Chris the article itself is the crown.

Dave, you and your photos rock! Got em here and thats where people appreciate your photography skills.

I know of a magazine that could use an Art Director:0 Hey just kidding!

Relevant News Porsche

Let's hope this is a good thing...

STUTTGART, Germany - Volkswagen AG said Thursday it will pursue an eventual merger with Porsche SE under VW's leadership, vowing the luxury sports car maker will retain its independence.

The Wolfsburg-based automaker, Europe's biggest by sales, said that its supervisory board, the German equivalent to a U.S. board of directors, plans to hold talks with Porsche Automobile Holding SE "in order to reach a final concept fulfilling this goal."

Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn said the "envisioned merger of Volkswagen and Porsche" followed a "compelling industrial logic and offers many promising perspectives: It makes two strong companies even stronger. "

Volkswagen added that the new company would be achieved by what it called the "step-by-step participation of Volkswagen in Porsche AG," Porsche's carmaking unit, and the subsequent merger of Volkswagen with the holding company that owns it.

The announcement came hours after Porsche chief executive Wendelin Wiedeking and chief financial officer Holger Haerter were let go by the heavily indebted company that makes the 911 sports car and Cayenne SUV.

The move - along with the announcement that Porsche will seek to raise funds, possibly from a Qatar investor - is expected to make it easier for Volkswagen and Porsche to merge given that Wiedeking, CEO since 1992, opposed such a move.

"The measure shall create the foundation of building an integrated car manufacturing group with Porsche SE and Volkswagen AG," a company statement said.

My source say this will be a very good thing, along with the departure of Härter and eclipse of Wolfgang P. Notice how that sterile new museum is devoid of faces like Singer, Bott, Von Hanstein, Steinemann, or even Butzi or Beurly? Weideking didn't care about heritage. Now the 911 will return to the fore, and hopefully with parts support for our old crocks...

A little more GTO on Mulholland

It's funny but I heard the same from a friend of mine in Germany last night. His sense of it was that as part of VW, Porsche will no longer have to be all things to all people. VW has lots of other products that can do that. Hopefully there'll be a much sharper focus on the Porsche brand and heritage under the new regime.

La Carrera, I would like to ask who is the narrator on the video? Maybe I missed something from a previous post.

Fantastic! Thank you!

I agree Derek. AWESOME isn't enough to describe that footage.
Do you recognize an old Truckstop? What Skyline and Mul used to look like.
New Houses before houses were ever there.
Doughnuts before any structures were built on it, etc, etc.

And of course, the old Racecourse the way it used to look. :)

Thanks for posting.

Stephen Mitchell narrates footage shot by Peter Helm of Stephen's GTO at Willow Springs Raceway and in the canyons of Los Angeles.
