LOL, there has been A LOT of this going on at my house. She's very into cars (has two Porsches of her own) but quickly tires of me bringing this up EVERY DAY when I get home from work.

Agreed, but you do need a different license for an 18-wheeler. On a side note it would be cool if someone made a proper update of King of the Mountain with a good story line. I was thinking about how few great racing movies there are.

Well it took me FIVE weeks to get through this thread and I have to say it may have changed my life!

Back in April we trekked to LA from Arkansas, taking the LONG way around (5200 miles round trip) so we could attend Luft5. While in LA for a week we had a run with a 991 S on Mulholland hwy from the Rock Store and ended up on PCH via Decker. Afterwards we got chased by a 1-series BMW down Tuna. What a thrill!

The day before the show we joined the Professor Run where we met Chris G (porcupine) and his wife.

Fast forward to last month, Chris G was staying just a few minutes from our house due to a flight layover. We took him out to dinner and while swapping stories he told us about this thread, the MIRRC, Banning and the infamous RSR.

The next day at work I took the plunge and started reading this epic tale. I became obsessed and it completely changed my outlook on this lifelong hobby of mine. I even started timing my commute to work in the morning.....whether I'm driving my 911 or my GMC pickup (lowered, Bilstein equipped and rear swaybar added

I just received my copy of John Hall's book yesterday and can't wait to dig in!

We are looking forward to returning to LA this spring for Luft6 and driving all the roads we missed last time, including the 'course.

Aloha From Maui

Aloha from Maui,
Greetings to those of you who knew me when I raced the hill back in the 80s. Old Man Gary, Chris Banning, Phil M. miss hanging out and talking story. Just re found this page and now able to comment here. Miss LA and the hill. If any one sees Gary let him know that Chuck says hi.

If anyone is writing a book about the hill, hit me up. Got lots of stories that the book barely touched on.

Finally graduated from my 73 AMC Javlin, the green one with the black stripe, and the blue 76 camero, to an 85 vette. We dont have as many good roads like there is in LA but I was able to get it up to 140mph over here.

Aloha, Chuck

Hi Chuck, good to see you here and happy that you are still happy and healthy.
I don't run into Gary much but I speak to him I'll say hi for you.

For those of you who don't know who Chuck is: he was the last man standing at Grandstands after the Cops scared everyone else off the Hill. Chuck refused to allow the Cops to cramp his style. They just kept inpounding his Car every night and he would go immediatly and pick it up at the impound yard. They knew he was coming right back to get it so they left it outside the yard. Then he would just go back up to Muholland again. He hung out there long after the crowds and racers left. He was the Die Hard of all Die Hards. He is also infamous for his techniques to get out of a Pursuit. While being chased by lights and siren he would tell his date to get naked and hop into the back seat, then he would pull over to the side of the road and jump into the back seat and take his shirt off. The Cops would approach his Car and see 2 people in the back seat semi naked. So when it came to court and the officer was asked what he witnessed at the time of pulling over Chucks Car, he would say he saw 2 people in the back seat engaged in a sex act. The Judge would throw the case out every time.
Talk about innovative, wow, that's so creative to escape a bad traffic violation.
I've always been very impressed with this particular story. In my opinion these stories and others makes Chuck a major Mulholland Persona like many others in the MRA, CRE, TVL, ACR, CR, ACRA, plus a few other Rogues outside of the groups.

Seems like from the pics Chuck posted, He keeps dates around that can aid him in that legal defense.

I know it sounds like a broken record, but is there any info on the new book or Chris' car build?

I built this in '65 and '66 to go up to Mulholland. Never made it.

So, a duck tail in '65 and a center fill cap. Now when did Porsche come out with the duck?
Oh, not the same since it's not half way up the rear end. Oh well.

I built the car to beat up on 289 Cobras. By the time it was finished the Cobra 427 was out. Another oh well.
Story of my life.

I forgot to record it but sounds like I didn't miss much.

Any chance we can get Banning to drive down the hill to Studio City next month?

Sold the Halibrands off it and then sold the car. I was told by someone that they saw the car within the year at a wrecking yard completely totalled in 1969. They would have known that car for sure because there was a lot of chrome on the underside.

Well I finally had a chance to run the course while I was in town for Luft6. First I met Chris G (Porcupine) up there before dinner one night and then I came back after dinner to do a night run all the way out to the 405. I was actually able to go up there four times but sometimes it was during daytime traffic. I just drove along and named off the curves that I knew to my wife.

That night I was zipping along towards the 405 I saw a faint light in the middle of my line. I slowed down and realized it was the front parking light of a flatbed truck loading a vehicle from a driveway on Mulholland. He didn't have ANY flashing lights on and was blocking all of the oncoming lane and half of mine. When I got even closer I noticed a pair of skid marks leading up to and around the front of the flatbed truck. The elevens stopped in a pull off on the right side of the road where a petrified driver was white knuckled in his BMW i3. If there hadn't been a pull off there would've been one less i3 driver in the world.
