Dad Proposed to Mom on Mulholland Drive

I good acquaintance is in town for a few weeks to get her daughter going at UCSB for the start of college.

One of the first things she asked was "do you still go up to Mulholland Drive"?
It has been 19 years since she has been on the hill. My response was let’s go!
I took her on the tour from Barham to Encino Hills Drive. She was not impressed with the curfew signs or the paparazzi at Bowmont. We made two full runs each way. Stopped at all the turnouts and infamous spots to ponder old memories. As everyone knows I carry a camera with me so she encouraged me to take some pictures of the road at night. Some didn't come out so good as it was dark. Had a nice crescent moon (over Bannings place) with a few clouds behind over the Pacific.

Marriage and a move out of state created a gap in our relationship over the years. The marriage failed and two children are now young adults but Mulholland Drive has passed the test of time again.

Surprisingly was quiet with no traffic. The Pièce de résistance was when she told me her Dad proposed to her Mom on Mulholland Drive in 1957. I asked where? She called her parents and Dad said a dirt lot between Coldwater and Bowmont called the "Pits" overlooking the lights of Burbank. Is that fricken too cool or what? Her Dad drove a 55' Bellaire street rod with 4 two barrel Stromberg’s at the time. I thought that was the bomb.

I told her about the Pelican thread and she could not wait to see it. 3 hours later and only half way though she was so excited that a bunch of guys got together tell our story. She thinks this so important to tell and keep alive. "Its part of our past and youth, if no record exists its like it didn’t even happen.... But it did and it’s being told here now. It is still alive and Mulholland is a special place. A time and a place that we belonged to and connected with in our youth. It’s a big part of our lives."

4 hours later after checking out the Pelican thread of oh my god I remember this and that it makes it all worth it. I told her it’s not like it used to be today but a few guys get together and meet once a week or so for old times sake. I explained one of these guys is the nemesis I never met up with and has become a new friend I like, a good person and respect very much (Banning) along with others. She say's it’s meant to be for a reason.

I will accept that at face value.

Some picture's I took tonight. She thinks the black and white’s capture Mulholland Drive at its high point. I agree.

Not sure if this is pixie dust or Mulholland Angels just east of Carls but it is the only pictures with these funky specs and spots.

Jeff, you always have great stories and Mulholland related tales to tell.

Thank you for all your time, creativity, and photos (Jeff, are photos 6 and 7 from the Esses?) that you have put into this thread that Derek started. Because of this thread, I have met many really great guys both from the old days and from the new (like Jeff H., Victor, Radu and many others). It has also rekindled friendships that were lost long ago.

You all know what I mean when I say that sometimes we may miss things from our past, and nostalgia can be a strong feeling. For those of us that played on Mulholland and for those that still do, this thread is a fine documentation. I believe that everyone that has contributed to this thread has added richness to our love of cars, Mulholland, and our own nostalgic experiences of the past. All deserve an applause and a heartfelt thank you from each other. I will start by sincerely thanking everyone for their contributions, it means a lot to so many, and is critical for future generations to understand what really took place in the hills of Los Angeles on that famous Drive we call Mulholland.

Chris,
Those are the esses. Nightime shots only come out good when stopped and high beams are strategically aimed.

Everyone remember these?

Hi Guys,

I have had a busy weekend and I have a busier week coming up. The IRL and Grand Am races are at Infineon this coming weekend and I have drivers to work with (refreshing their Infineon track knowledge) and SpeedTV filming in our shop this week (with Scott Pruett). I figured I better post some replies in here tonight or the week will go by and I won't get to it.

(1) Someone asked if I need pictures of the RIR main pit garages. "Yes"....in fact I could use better pictures of all of the buildings in the main pits (late 80's era).

(2) I'm wondering if this topic about the RIR track simulation should be in a different string/thread? I had asked Ron Cortez (CRE) about that and he said it was okay to post here. But, I wonder if that's best since the RIR simulation project will be ongoing for several months and the posts could be numerous (especially if you guys want me to post screenshots of the simulation track progress). What do you guys think....should I start a new thread on the RIR simulation topic?

(3) Scott....that was great to read about your experiences with Augie. He is a super guy and you described him exactly as I would describe him. I would be proud to be considered a "Pabst" cut from the same mold as he, as he has always had "hero status" with me as well. His son is just like him, by the way. I haven't seen or heard from him in about three years. I'm glad to know he's doing well.

I'll try to sneak in here at nights perhaps this week and see what's posted. Otherwise, it will probably be next week before you hear from me again.

Take care....and thanks again for all the great pics (and keep them coming)!

Regards,

Tom Pabst

Riverslide

I won the SSB race at the (first anual) Last Lap of Riverside. However it was the very last National race. It was very cool to have 12 checkered flags waved at you at the finish.

Victor,
Have any photos of your R5 in action?

I knew a guy who bought one brand new. Bright green. License plate read "LESNOT". Fun little car. Great hp to weight ratio. About 6 months later I am at a friends shop in Burbank and see this R5 parked in the back with no engine or trans. I point and say "no"? My friend answers "yes". In 6 months that one became a roller. In 1999 I am at another guys shop (Jack's) on Oxnard Street in Van Nuys (where Kevin is now located) and low and behold that same R5 is there. Still no engine or trans in it. Never saw it again after that. Jack probably still has it parked in his mom's back yard.

Actually Ken that worked at Cylinder Heads America took that photo. He said the car was higher but that he almost dropped the camera and then recovered to take the shot. I knew the car had one wheel off the ground but didn't know there were 2 off until they came down
and I heard a thump, then another thump.

Oh, and by the way that was a former Mulholland car that kept getting modified until it was too difficult to drive on the street. i.e Big cam, webers, stiff suspension, loud, no radio, loud no heater, loud. You get the idea. The car was orignally owned by Marvin Winkler and I bought it off him because it had a lot of cool stuff like BRE fenders, etc. on it and mine didn't. I eventually sold it in trade for a street car. Wish that I could find it now.

The bad part of it was I went from having a pretty cool street ride to turning it into a race car and then had to find a junker to drive on the street. Like a VW square back. Yuck. Ah, what guys will do to go racing.

Jeff, Great story. But, you didn't mention her name or her original (besides her parents great story) connection to Mulholland. Which is waay too cool of a story.

Spots on the lens. Charlie's Foo Fighters?

Her name is Deanna. Connection to Mulholland? Her nickname was "Shotgun" . Always front right seat from Mulholland to Van Nuys Blvd to Glenoaks and Peoria. Very much a car chick and just a great person. The nickname originated not because of the seating position but the fact that her "High Beams" were constantly on. The daytime running lights are still working to this day! She has the looks, personality and heart to match. Married an idiot who didnt appreciate what he had in life.

Her Dad was a street racer in the 50's. He settled down after marriage to raise a family and run his business. He owned a couple of 76 Stations in the valley. One was in Van Nuys and not sure where the other one was? He retired quite successfully. He also had the franchise at Whitman airport for refueling planes for a while. I used to buy Av-Gas (Green Gas) straight off his trucks in the early 80's and run it in my cars. You had to fill up a gas can because they wouldnt let you fill a car tank with it. The aviation stuff was leaded and the octane was 103! Great for top ends.

Let's meet tonight at Truckstop around 8:00pm. It should be a warm evening with good visibiltiy. Afterwards, if anyone is interested we can go to the Fox and Hounds or the Pineapple Grill for food and refreshments.

Yesterday, I painted the Z28 that I have restored to very good condition. I'll drive it tonight if I can get a temp registration.

During painting I took this photo.

This is what it looked like before paint. Faded, dog paw damage, light rust.

Now, the Porsche work can begin....

The Camaro looks great! Don't see too many of those around in good condition these days. As luck would have it, I scanned this slide last night for a Patrick Depailler fan in South Africa.

Cheers,

Thanks Kurt, it took two weeks of prep work to get it like that.

The shot of that Camaro blazing into the turn hard looks awesome. Thank you for posting it.
