microstamping shell casings in cali.

Just saw this:

California Senate Bill 357 and its sister bill Assembly Bill 352 would have all new guns stamp an I.D. number on shell casings as they fire, and require every semi-automatic handgun sold after Jan. 1, 2009, to be equipped with the new microstamping technology that assigns traceable serial numbers to individual bullets.

from http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,164550,00.html

also latimes: http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-cap18oct18,1,1496850.column?coll=la-util-politics-cal

Do they really believe this will help solve criminal gun use when it could be easily circumvented? Do they honestly think that if I'm going to shoot someone while committing a crime that I'm not going to pull the battery if it's laser or file the stamps if it's punch type.

Good luck to everyone out there.

I suppose I'll have to drive to AZ for my ammo now. Or use reloads, which I can't stand.

other then impracticality to implement or effectiveness in terms of having criminals not tamper, or not using older weaponry, what's the problem ?

whoever shoots , is responsible for the trajectory and place where his bullet end up
whether or not it is "stamped" or not, the responsibility is already there

anybody who would be hindered by the stamping of his bullets, i would think is somebody who doesn't take this responsibility serious enough?

this stamping would not cause any problems if the guns are used as they should
nobody is going to check serials of bullets at the gun range
if you shoot in self defense, then the self defense would already have been there without the stamps

if anybody steals or misuses a weapon for which you are responsible
then you should have reported it stolen , or taken better care to prevent the mis-use

and let's say somebody recycles a bullet already stamped, let's be optimistic and say you fired rounds in a water tank, and somebody took those bullets , placed them on new shells, and fires them from an old weapon without stamps... i fail to see how that would not leave forensic traces of the second time use, groove marks of the new barrel...

No they don't...but what they wish to convey, by passing more laws, is that they are doing something, and that they are "in control"...

Or go to a police range and pick up some of their brass, and scatter at will...

I think all gun manufacturers should stop selling to anyone in CA (including police) after Jan. 1, 2009.

Texas is sounding better and better. . .

This state is going to tax and legislate me right the hell out of here. I love CA and I especially love the weather here, but CA doesn't have a monopoly on good weather and with each passing day I find myself in love not with what California is, but what it once was. . . Might be time to look at leaving.

Between crap like this, the housing costs, the tax rates, the smog nazi laws, the business-unfriendly environment (which I take a keen interest in, being a guy that's planning on going into private practice for myself in the next 2-4 years), the traffic, the illegal alien sympathizer movement and the rest of it, I'm really beginning to wonder if it's time to consider abandoning ship.

Simply. Ridiculous.

Don't have a problem per se, but as has been mentioned above, its about control, and not thinking down the road. Pick up used brass and reload. Sort of like taggants in explosives. You blast rock with explosives that have taggants and the taggants end up in the concrete of the building that gets blown up as well as the taggants of the explosives from the terrorists. Your gong to see a run on pre-2009 guns, and guns from out of state.

It is simply a way of penalizing the innocent gun owner, really doesn't do **** for the bad guy that steals a semi automatic and kills someone, where do these people come up with these ideas.

Can this technology even be implemented in time?

This is precisely why I live in NV and NH!! I guess we'll all have to pick up our casings and remember to dig the slug out of the body before we leave the scene...

The only practical way I can see is to have the "stamp" on the firing pin. It will wear off so fast it will never work.

Does anyone believe it will solve any crimes? Did the "assault" weapon ban stop major crimes? Does limiting the magazine to 10 rounds really make any difference? How about special safety tests from that state of California?

It's like the CHL. People who go through the training and get one are the most law abiding citizens around.

This, like the ban on lead ammunition and lead primers, are all about banning guns anyway the anti-gunners can.

Note to all gang members: Don't you DARE drive over to vegas and buy a 'non-stamping' gun before you commit that double homicide. If you do, you are gonna be in SO much trouble.

See www.calguns.net for more discussion, w/ more info, on the microstamping law.

Doesn't take effect for awhile, then only takes effect if some conditions are met about the technology being available patent-free, but currently the known technology is patented. So not clear CA will ever actually mandate microstamping pistols.

Didn't that huge shoot out down in LA with the 2 bank robbers in body armor, walking around with AK-47's happen after the assault gun ban? so if it is only on semi autos, does that mean six shooters will get more popular? Now it stamps the brass, not the bullet, is that right? What if they don't leave their brass laying around or it stays in the car when they do the driveby?

It's just window dressing to convince the non-educated public and liberals that the politicians are doing something for the outrageous salary they get paid, it will change nothing, just drive up your tax bill trying to implement and enforce.

Here is the moron who invented it. He is a NRA member and gun enthusiast.

All that will be required is replacing the parts. It also looks like the microstamping will not standup to sand paper. The only crimes this will solve will be those commited by legal firearms and usually, those are easily solved anyway.
