jailbreaking the phone does open up security issues with the iphone, it's happening now. Be careful, if you brick the phone (fry the programming trying to jailbreak) ATT will give you the finger if you try to return it.

Only jailbreak if it's a must-have program you know it's safe. I just really wish they opened up the phone to saving apps and attachments, Apple is so paranoid about that.

You can Jailbreak without Unlocking.

No real warranty worries with Jailbreaking, since all you have to do before getting any warranty work done is to restore the phone with itunes.

It is simply a software modification that allows you to use another app store called Cydia.

Do a search for Purplera1n if you are interested. A quick software download, 1 click, reboot phone and you are done.
Yes, I agree that you can jailbreak without unlocking, but it is also true that the jailbreak program does provide the means if you wish to use it. As for the warranty and breach of contract, I believe if you read your contract(s), you may change your view.

Jailbreaking is very simple. I haven't heard of too many cases of bricking phones recently. This may have been more of a problem earlier. There are a lot of things you can do with a jailbroken phone that makes it worth it for a lot of people. If you don't like the break you can always go back or just wait for the big update at the end of summer from Apple.

I dumped my windows based Samsung Omnia for an Iphone and never looked back. Its 1000 times better than that POS Samsung and it was supposed to be good.

In fact - I was so impressed with the operations, I dumped my PC and got a 24" iMac.

I was a Apple hater until I opened my mind and actually took a look. Everything tehy say is spot on!! (yes I got 'spot on' from Wheeler Dealers - lol)

my 4 month old Iphone is a dead 4 month old Iphone after this weekend. I guess a few drops of sweat did it in. Can't get any discount on a new one and not going to pay full price, so I guess I have no Iphone.

We just got one and have the option to purchase anytime during the first year, the "if anything happens" additional coverage. There are water detectors in the phones, was that indicator activated?

the anything happens doesn't cover moisture damage from what I can tell. I put it in a jar of dessicant for a couple days so the indicator at the bottom of the earphone jack is not red, but haven't taken it apart to check the other indicators. I didn't have insurance anyway. after reading the things it didn't cover, didn't feel it was worth the price. I work in the sun/rain around water everyday so the chances of my phone getting wet is pretty high. I went thru 4-5 phones last year and my phone insurance was canceled long ago

I think it's more where it hits when dropped.

I dropped my first one at least a dozen times, actually tossed it oner my shoulder and into the street once and no issues.

Then one day it fell about three feet but it hit on the corner and that shattered the screen.

I dropped mine this weekend also - about 4'.

I use a case and screen protector. The case took the jolt, came apart and did it's job.

I convinced my buddy to start carrying his iPhone in a translucent water protectant device, since the iPhone had such issues with water.

And that my friends, was how he dropped it. He was sliding it into the bag and missed. The rubber case doesn't like to go into the bag.

Hey Apple, here's a clue: Spend the money you use for moisture detectors, to make the phone water proof!

Apple will sell you a replacement for $200, regardless of how you destroy your phone. Take it to a store and cry for a few minutes.

John do you need the smartphone part or would a regular cell work?

If it would I would suggest a Samsung Rugby. My dad has one and it is super tough and loud as hell

closest apple store is at least 80 miles away. I'll check what I can do online. I don't text, don't take many photos and just a regular phone would be and was okay... but I really like the weather radar, business/phone/address locator apps in my line of work. I have a drawer full of old phones I can use until I find a new gadget I like.

With that unfortunate record, too bad you didn't have a good case for your iPhone.

There are water resistant cases for the iPhone that, while not waterproof, will protect against rain, splashes, soaking sweat, etc. OtterBox Defender is one.

Maybe you can find a 3G (not 3GS) on eBay?

Right. How many waterproof cellphones can you think of?

See my post to johnco re the water resistant Otterbox Defender case.

There are fully waterproof cases too. But they are bulky.

What's wrong with the baggie, when you're working out? I keep my Treo Pro in my left hand Jerset pocket and my Keltec P3AT in my right hand Jersey pocket, both protected by baggies!

No sweat!

The baggie is fine, assuming you (or a friend) don't drop the phone in the water when putting it in the baggie . . .
