IMHO, there are a few options for what I would consider a "cool SUV", but none of them are current factory vehicles.

In fact, being "cool" probably has more to do with what you do with it....or can do with it. Not just another jacked-up station wagon/imitation truck...

If I had to have a SUV it would be this one.

It's THE coolest IMO.

I like this one.

Toyed with the idea of buying one. But didn't like the interior, nor the price- and only the newer ones are worth having, as far as reliability goes. Got a Range Rover instead. Utter disaster. Got an LR3 instead. Cool, respectable Mpgs, plenty of room (7 adults) and a warranty. Still like the looks of the Gelandewagen, but glad I didn't buy one.

YMMV.

Paul.

IMO, no. SUV's are not "cool". They are a utilitarian device great for doing work, going off road or when there's heavy snow on the ground.

Here's cool.

I was cool once.

I had plans to be even cooler.

I think this is cool, but know some people cannot get past all the plastic cladding.

"SUV's ... are a utilitarian device great for doing work, going off road or when there's heavy snow on the ground."

well put...

Many people would be better off with Ian's AWD sedan (or a wagon) or a mini-van if they need to carry a bunch o' stuff, but do not need a lot of ground clearance for the heavy snow or deep muddy ruts, etc.

Range Rovers/ BMW Xs are about as cool as Cayennes which is not at all.

Family transportation Evoloution:

Station wagon -> Minivan / SUV -> Crossover / Compact SUV

None of these ever were "cool", but one can't be seen in the previously popular vehicle type. I could care less, if I think a station wagon or minivan fits the bill, I'd buy one.
