well, looking back to when I was a teen, I would have viewed those as very different scenarios.

if I were presented with a long list of bad things to have to happen to me as a teen, being anally raped would be way down on my list of choices.

but that's just me. you may have been a more open minded teen than me.

Sorry but I view any adult (of either gender) in a position of authority having sex (in whatever orifice) with a young kid to be wrong. Then again some here are much more open minded about molestation.

Oh, I agree it's all wrong.

Just not equally wrong. A 60 year old man anally raping a 10 year old boy is much worse to me than a 25 year old female teacher having sex with a 17 year old male student.

So, for example, if I'm a judge I sentence those 2 people differently.

Is that "open minded about molestation," or just being able to see shades of grey instead of black and white?

That doesn't seem like a very controversial viewpoint.

(But this is a place these days where people commend 10 year olds for carrying guns and live ammo with them on Halloween to protect against people stealing their candy, so I'm not so sure anymore.)

Sure I see the gray and in your scenario, depending on the details, they deserve different penalties. My issue is that, for instance, I wouldn't think that a 37 year old female teacher having sex with a 14 year old student (of either gender) would have any controversy - it is 100% wrong. But just like the candy protection, some people have different ideas.

The big list: Female teachers with students

I don't think there would be any controversy about that scenario being wrong.

I think if you go through some of the previous threads you'll find people who disagree with you. I believe "get some!" was the operative sentiment...

What's with the at home meeting with the witness and his dad, and not at the University offices?

Joe Paterno IS Penn State football. Sandusky still had an office in the FOOTBALL building on campus up until last week along with access to the FOOTBALL facilities.

How Paterno could have permitted sandusky anywhere near the program after knowing the allegations is beyond me. And for thos that say he didn't have the clout to do anything further--that is total BS.

Having played "Devil's Advocate" here for a bit, I hafta confess I agree with this post entirely. And this means I am buying your assertion, McLovin, that Sandusky's behavior was known since before 2000. I continue to suspect that Paterno may have had a hand in Sandusky's resignation and that he opposed Sandusky's access to university football facilities but that's just a guess based on what I know about Paterno's usual reaction to ethical or moral misbehavior. Even if other university administrators were granting access to Sandusky, Paterno probably had the juice to stop it. And did not. And so, shame befalls Paterno. You see, I'm not as dense as you may have thought. But again, according to my observation, this is SOOOOOO uncharacteristic of Paterno.

BTW, I was a virgin until I was about 15 or 16, when I met up with an older sister of one of my friends. She was 26. That was consensual. On a fair number of occasions.

I just finished reading the Grand Jury report. I nearly vomited.

8 victims, disgusting. And those are the ones they know about! How many others did he prey upon? That sick pedophile used the Second Mile youth org as a "recruiting ground". My heart aches for those kids.

This thread is also turning my stomach. Joe Pa is a walking legend and what he says, GOES! There's no questioning that. That's proven by when the McCreary witnessed the rape, he went to his dad, not the cops. Then Joe Pa sits on it till the next day before he notified the school. When Curley and Shultz were finally notified ( 36+ hours after the rape was witnessed ) they didn't do what they should have, which is call the police, immediately.

Yesterday, I saw a quote from one of the victim's mother saying it was like a slap in the face all over again. I tend to agree.

We're talking about 8 KNOWN child molestation/rapes. Read the GJ report and see how Sandusky operated. He had access to hundreds of troubled boys and enticed them with trips to countless football games, Bowl games, NFL games, dinners with athletes, access to sidelines, etc. The list goes on and on.

I predict he kills himself when more guys come forward. I hope he doesn't though. I hope he goes to prison and gets his own "shower" justice. Over and over.

Ugh, this again? There was a day when I would think this was cool or ok. ( like when I was 15-19 )
It's not, it's wrong. And no, I'm not going to ask if you would be ok if one of your 15 yr old kids had sex with a 26 yr old. You've already offered that tidbit. Just because a person jumps from a 4 story building and lives, doesn't mean it's ok to do it. They got lucky. How many messed up people are out there that didn't survive their 15yr old sex event with a 26yr old? Devil's advocate? Please, you're just being purposefully obtuse.

I agree.

Part of his problem is he can never admit when he was wrong. So all you get is lame backpedaling, "devil's advocate" bs, etc.

It's now been revealed that the House that Joe Built in fact had a secret basement of horrors. The "pillar of responsibility" wasn't quite that.

This is a horrifying story that does turn the stomach, as have many posts in this thread.

I'm glad there are still some people with some common sense here, though.

Joe's words...

“This is a tragedy,” Paterno said in a statement. “It is one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more.”

Not the words of a man blindsided by all this. Those are words of regret. We're supposed to make the best decision possible with the best info at the time. That way, one should not feel regret about a direction. He KNEW something was up and chose the high road. He should not be on the sideline again. Don't point out "due process". Let the courts do that with Sandusky. Joe? He knew and the school knew. It's just sad and I am a huge football fan. What's worse is all the kids thumping their chest at how Joe did nothing wrong. They should all ( every one of them ) read the GJ report.

Joe goes on to tell the board they "should not spend another moment contemplating his future". How whacked out is this guy? I won't pile on about age, there's no denying he's a specimen and leading example of long life. I'm speaking of his "I'm the Head Friggin Coach! It's MY campus." attitude. The board should tap him on the shoulder today and say "uh, got a sec?"

Disclaimer: I didn't know who any of these people were before reading this thread. I care not one whit about professional sports and even less about college sports. So, for the record, I have no idea who Paterno is or what he is supposed to have done that made him such a pillar of moral righteousness in people's eyes.

That said...

Anyone who even had an inkling about this whole thing (Paterno, McWhatever, his father, etc.) and did not IMMEDIATELY after finding out beat the ever-loving daylights out of Sandusky followed by a call to the police is, in my humble opinion, GUILTY of aiding and abetting a child rapist.

Regardless of what "the law" or "policy" says.

Sandusky deserves nothing less than death by slow torture. His enablers/accomplices deserve jail time.

The sad part for me is that while this is shocking, it certainly isn't surprising.

I agree, Joe should have followed up or blocked access to the players after the allegations and/or the guys retirement.

Wonder if Joe had a WTF meeting with him? Lot's of unanswered questions.

This is going to get a lot uglier for that old freak.

His story doesn't pass any common sense test, and he is going to get caught.

Mr. Paterno’s day-to-day status with the program could be affected by the state attorney general’s investigation into the sexual abuse allegations. In explaining his actions, Mr. Paterno has publicly said he was not told of the graphic nature of a suspected 2002 assault by Jerry Sandusky, a former assistant, of a young boy in the football building’s showers. Mr. Paterno said the graduate assistant who reported the assault, Mike McQueary, said only that something disturbing had happened that was perhaps sexual in nature.

[Yeah, that sounds right. McQueary sees a 10 year old being anally raped and he immediately calls Paterno and says . . . what??? "Coach, I just saw something disturbing that may have perhaps been sexual in nature!" LOL. Right]

But on Tuesday, a person with knowledge of Mr. McQueary’s version of events called Mr. Paterno’s claim into question. The person said Mr. McQueary had told those in authority the explicit details of what he saw, including in his face-to-face meeting with Mr. Paterno the day after the incident.

[Of course he did. What human being wouldn't?? Why in the world would McQueary report it to Paterno, but not tell him what he saw? No one is going to believe that Paterno wasn't told all the details. It makes no sense]

On Tuesday night, the Board of Trustees released a statement saying it was “outraged by the horrifying details” in the grand jury’s report on the case and promised it would take “swift, decisive action.” It said it planned to appoint a special committee to undertake a “full and complete investigation.”

Like I said yesterday, this is why Paterno's press conference was cancelled yesterday.

He is going to take the Fifth and not dig his hole any deeper than he already has.
