. .223 and .40 is non existant around here. Even .22 is getting scarce.

For the .223 guys, check out "corbin press." They offer a kit to make your own jacketed bullet from a .22LR shell. Might be worthwhile if things get all pear shaped.

Other than testing out my latest Commander with 100 rds., I'm done shooting for a while. Need to sit on what I have until things calm down. I figure some states are going to pass new laws on ammo, either taxes or background checks or monthly limits. If that happens in some big states, it will make ammo more plentiful for the rest of us. And if things really return to normal within a year, lots of folks will be blowing out all the stuff they hoarded, probably on Backpage or Gunbroker. I imagine a lot of folks are gonna be owing huge tax bills in April 2014 when they file for 2013. So that might be a good time to find deals too.

If you're going to buy from Wally world, do it now as they are suspending ammo orders.

I just picked up some 9mm at my local Cabelas, they were decently stocked. I saw all of the popular stuff with the exception of .223. Quantity limit of 10 per customer. They only had one AR15 on the shelf, a basic Bushmaster for $729 which I'm surprised they had considering the run on them.

The story about Walmart was a rumor. They have officially debunked it.

Could the bare ammo shelves be caused by the large amount the U.S. government is buying?

Consider the source.

Doubt it. Too many manufacturers out there don't sell to gov't. agencies and their stuff still is on backorder. I saw a forklift drop off a pallet of 9mm in front of a store last week and they were out the next morning. And that's with a daily limit per customer.

Without starting a new thread on guns/ammo/etc. will this mag fit the AR15? I'm not familiar with FNHR, etc.
FAQ's ask if will fit the AR15 and the answer is yes, but try it to be sure. Well, the only way I can try it, it to buy and ship it.

I am shocked at the price of 556 and 223. About .80 for 223 and almost a buck for 556... each? How do you guys shoot that stuff? Last time I bought ammo was the 70's and it was only a few bucks for a box.

I bought 500 rounds of .223 in December for $120, making it cheaper to shoot than my 9mm. This was at my local Cabelas, I'm sure it was even cheaper online at the time. After this stupidity passes I'm sure it will go back to more reasonable prices.

I've learned not to "look" at the prices on old ammo boxes Fint .

ps: Then again...I probably made $2.50 an hour back then...it's all relative.

I started my first non-farm job at $1.60 an hour. It seemed to go pretty far back then...but I was still living at home.

What does a brick of .22 go for these days? I picked up several bricks back when they were still like $5-7 for 500 rounds. That was before the 2008 election. I think the last time I looked, they were $15-17, a couple of years back. I do know that the shipping costs have gone up due to new regulations.

You "old fart" . $2.35/hr for me back in '76 (I was 16)...still beat the heck out of working in the tobacco fields (for even less) however

edited: ps: I'd actually been working "for years" by then...mowing lawns for $1.25 (each) and I supplied the mower/gas/sweat.

Actually, I still made $1.80 in 1976 as in NC they did not have to pay min wage to fast food workers unless it was a national chain. Yep...worked in the tobacco fields as well. Got paid whatever they thought was fair. It was usually not much..but I sure had a nice tan.

I also hand waxed cars for $5 each back then...and they were behemoths.

No ammo shortage here. I cast over 600 bullets (from free wheel weights) this last weekend for .38 Special / .357 mag and .45 Colt. I'm still working out of kegs of powder and cases of primers purchased over the years, with some of them well over 20 years old. I just buy that stuff when it's on sale (or when the hoarders discover they have more than they will ever use), in quantity, whether I need it of not. I've simply never been affected by any sort of ammo shortage. That, and I shoot centerfire pistol and revolver for less than you guys shoot your .22's.

I bought 2100 rounds for about $98 a few weeks ago from Cabella's. First ammo buy and I'm sure it was too much.
