It's a term for silencer. Called moderator because it cuts the noise back a bit but not quite as well as the particular brand they use in the movies that works really well.

SU-PWESSORS(supressors) are NOW LEGAL FOR ALL/ANY GAME SPECIES IN ARIZONA! any caliber any pistol and rifle ANYTHING!
ANY ROUND MAGAZINE/CLIP/DRUM IS NOW LEGAL IN ARIZONA! as per laws signed by gov brewer early 2013. now all of this has come around due to heavy cartel activities in the southern regions of state. in other words YER NOT OUTGUNNED when chasing itty bitty COUES DEER and JAVA-LEANERS along the border hunting units. on the other side of the coin if ya need a freeking 100rd drum on yer rifle to hit a deer/elk/anything..........................well ya really SHOULD PROBABLY LEARN HOW TO SHOOT! but then i'm a cheap ass and TOTALLY SUBSCRIBE TO THE MANTRA "ONE SHOT=ONE KILL"! but then im old skool also and shooting multiple times COSTS MONEY! unless of course its a MONSTER ROYAL BULL ELK ON THE RUN and yer 1st shot didnt hit the bread basket cuz he moved/ran/jumped, im a gonna UNLOAD on his azz to drop him before he runs away never to be seen again! and TRUST ME THEY WILL RUN AWAY TO A LAND FAR FAR AWAY if ya took a crappy shot! now does this mean i was sweating my FNH SCAR 17 acquisition a while back on HOW TO FIND 5 RD HUNTING LEGAL MAGS(some mfgs dont even make them like FNH)? yes i was, as 20rd mags were impossible to come by and 10rd mags(the lowest rd count they mfg) had not even made u.s. shores. so i scratched my lil head............and FOUND "MAG BLOCKERS.COM" and i bought magblockers that would LIMIT my round count to the LEGAL 5 ROUNDS! ie. i could take my 20rd mags and legally make them into 5 round LEGAL hunting mags. now gov brewer signs law allowing ANY round count, i found 10rd mags from FNH and ya know how many im a GONNA CARRY? 5 rounds in the mag and 1 in the pipe, just like i have for the last 35 years ! is this a GREAT STATE OR WHAT?

I can relay some perspective on the female side. Some of you know we bought our daughter who is 11 and almost 100 pounds a Marlin 30AS in 30-30 last year for Christmas. This summer we had a shooting get together (a marine sniper was the guest of honor this year) and she took her 30-30. She was the only girl shooting there and all the guys were impressed and were asking her if she wanted to shoot their guns. Aside from her 30-30 the other center-fire gun she felt comfortable with was a .243. We were there for a little over 4 hours which included a lunch break and at the end of the day I asked if she had a good time she said yeah. I asked what would have made it better and she said "I wish we could have shot more".
I guess what I am trying to say is if this little 100 pound pre-teen can have fun in small and medium bore rounds I think your GF will do fine with a .243 or 6MM (if you can find ammo for it) over a .22.

Yes, Moderator = Silencer. Not quite like the movies with supersonic ammo, you still get the crack but a. it is fine to shoot without ear protection and b. the deer have no idea where the sound came from making a second shot much easier. Quite often one will drop and the others won't have a clue what's going on and carry on grazing.
.22 LR or .410 shotguns with subsonic ammo using them are virtually silent. The action on a Ruger .22 makes more noise than the shot. Just like in the movies....

I always found in Northern Michigan that .30-06 loads were at every store and readily available.

Tanick, Thanks for the clarification. I have experience with supressors, just never heard the other term before.

I think you guys might be a bit confused regarding suppressors vs. muzzle brakes. The former suppress the sound a bit (like other here have said, not like the really good ones in the movies...) and the latter mitigates recoil. Suppressors do nothing to mitigate recoil. Muzzle brakes actually make the gun much louder. As far as I know, there is no one solution to both problems.
As also mentioned earlier, suppressors do little when the projectile is supersonic. Much (actually most) of the noise generated is really a sonic boom generated by the supersonic projectile. Muzzle brakes work well on small bore, high velocity numbers where a measurable component of recoil is the "jet effect" of the escaping high pressure gasses. They don't do a darn thing on heavy bullet, low to moderate velocity rounds, where bullet weight (inertia) is the major component of recoil.

Is it because of the shape or is the butt stock short on that gun? That would make an interesting addition to my collection

I can measure the LOP, but it's comfortable for me and I wear 35" sleeve. I have monkey arms. The shop is closed today but I can get some numbers for you tomorrow. The stock is a custom stock so I'm sure it was made to somebody's specs.

No worries and I am not really in a place to entertain a new rifle. I did some looking and for the specs on that round I would stick with the 5.56.

no probs. I'm not trying to sell anything here really. There was a lot said about the 6.5-55, I knew we had one and somebody expressed interest in seeing some photos. That's all. Push comes to shove I may end up getting it myself as a project for the winter and put a nice stick of lumber on it.

I have a 25-06 which is a great round for a little of everything. I have used it for mule dear and antelope and can use a smaller grain bullet for ground hogs. It is have a very flat trajectory. I think it is a great versatile cartridge.

to give you a vantage point on what a MUZZLE BRAKE WILL DO.............on my mcmillian win 70 .338 win mag................its like shooting a .270 or less!
butt on the other side of the coin IT IS LOUD! how loud? well its guuurrranteed to make yer EARS BLEED and BLOW YER EAR DRUMS OUT! and what happens when ya lite off any belted magnum off during deer/elk/any season? especially with a muzzle brake! you will have a 1000 hunters CONVERGE ON YOU IN A HEARTBEAT thinking YOU FOUND THE HERD! so there ARE some very clear postive aspects of SU-PWESSING(supressing) ANY HUNTING RIFLE! because if ya missed yer shot(yes it happens even to me), now you have a gaggle of bloodthirsty hunters stirring poo up and spooking anything that was there. and once the 1st shots ring out on opening morning..............it becomes a whole nuther enchilada to find game that are NOT SPOOKED! my beeeaattch about supwessing my .338 is i will have to remove threaded muzzle brake and add whatever length the supwessor is to a 26" barrel............or cut the barrel ,rethread, and then use length of supwessor to = 26". so there is always a GIVE AND TAKE/YING YANG! so its muzzle brake/magnaporting VS no muzzle brake VS a suppwessor VS flash hider. ya sure as hell dont need a flash hider on a hunting rifle. my hk-91 barrel is threaded w/flash hider all (3) M1A barrels are threaded w/flash hiders my scar 17 barrel is threaded w/flash hider my mcmillian m40a1 is NOT threaded but easily could be. my mcmillian win 70 .338 barrel is threaded w/muzzle brake. what a CONUNDRUM? what would SCOOOO-BEE DOO?
