Sadly the Lancia doesn't have the oil/water cooling system as on the 944. Trust me that's the first thing I checked. After I pulled the head I noticed hard brown sealant like stuff in the water passages so the PO knew and tried to cheap fix it. I took a days off to a resort near Mount Fuji to spend time with the woman to keep that ticking over nicely.
Enroute back to Tokyo now. The woman is giving the E55 a caning.
I'll try to back out that big bolt. If not build an engine hoist and lift it out. Hopefully it will clear the diff flange.

I did it!! Turns out the transfer case must be removed. Undid 3 18mm bolts and the oil transfer tube and the clump separated into the engine, transfer case and transmission and a pool of gear oil. Pity the shop is closed for New Years holidays. Oh well get to do some paint repair to my E55, lower my dads E430, swap interiror on the 86-951 and repaint the 944S2.

Well I finally got into it yesterday
Got a lot done on the Lancia.
I finished stripping the old engine.
Transferred over timing covers and bolts
Discovered I got the wrong water pump.
Cleaned the work area and parts, soaking up some of the oil and coolant collect spare nuts and bolts
Moved the new engine into place.
Aligned the clutch and put the transmission in place.
More next week.

Does the engine lift out the top of the bay on an integrale or does it have to come out the bottom?

Kudos on pushing forward. I got the heebie-jeebies just looking at your photos. Just the layout of the accessories, cam and whatever else is driven there looks scary!

Haha if you think that is bad - Google "Lancia Volumex Engine" - which is all that PLUS a belt driven supercharger.

As a side note I havent seen one (Volumex) on the road for about 20 years...

I am doing it from the bottom since I dont have an engine hoist. Plus I think the factory and race teams did it from the bottom. If I had the benefit of a data base, or web forum like here or Rennlist, it would have been a lot easier. Trial and error takes more time frustrations. It really is a pretty simple car, but daft design, compared to anything German. I mean about 6 bolts for an engine mount!!!! most of which are unequal lengths. 19 and 17mm transmission bolt and 1 18mm The car is filled with such inconsistencies. With any German cars the nut and bolt car logically organized in such a way that you cant confuse them, but not this baby.
Now I know. Was it worth it? If they paid me clock rate of $70/hour maybe. If they paid me a book rate, oh hell no. If I owned the car, no. Now I know why they asked me to do it and not their in-house mechanic. If I were rich enough to pay a shop yes.
I would much rather build a VW Golf MK2 with a 2.0l turbo 4motion set up. I remember years ago I so a brand new VW R32GTI just get clobbered by the Lancia at Twin Ring Motegi and that got me horny for the Lancia plus the rally creds. But after seeing the more recent videos on Youtube of these modded VW MK2s, it makes more sense. VW simplicity, reliability, and access to parts just makes sense.

I managed to install the transfer case and transmission. But the clutch was really fiddly to put together. I have no idea, no inclination to separate the pressure plate and release bearing so I had to somehow get the fork around the release bearing in position. After about 1 hour of trying every trick and position it finally went together. But there is still a gap and 2 of the 5 bolt hole are out of alignment . My guess is one of the dowels arent seated at the bottom, where I cant see. I should get the water pump this week then next week, finish the front engine including alternator, starter, timing belt tensioner, lift it to torque down the transmission.

Today I did the water pump set the timing and balance shaft belt. The PITA was the right engine cover which required removing the a bracket carrying the ac compressor, power steering pump, alternator. The timing is attached at the water pump outlet pipe and behind the timing belt and balance shaft. The other/ bigger timing cover goes on easy. The big hole in the middle is for the engine stabilizer. I was right about the dowel pin. I guess one of the transmission bolt guides slide out and got bent so won't slide back into the transmission. I really don't want to have to remove the transmission again.

I was right. That dowel was completely unnecessary。Took it out and the transmission slide much closer. But it isnt completely a tight enough fit to transfer case into the transmission. Im loosing my motivation. I just want it over.

It doesn't look like a lot of progress to the casual observer.

Never give up? Sometimes it is better when you do. I unloaded a couple projects before - it was a big relief. I like to give up when it is necessary!

Wish I could. My pride won't let me.Year ago stuck on a snow bound mountain driving from Toronto to Virginia. Everyone stopped. My 87 Golf couldn't get traction. I put it in reverse and backed up over the summit. Turned it into a 911. Where there is a will....
