We have two cats, bro (Jingles) and sis (Noel), rescues, and we are in the process of moving across country. We have had them for around 8 years.
We are having remodeling work done so a transitional step was to take them to my MIL who is local. It was a horrible experience getting them into the carriers. The boy scratched me good so I had to wear a long sleeved jacket to diminish the bloodletting. We got them to my MILs and they have been there three days now and they aren't eating or drinking. I visited them yesterday and they are still pissed at me. They are under separate beds. I see them, but it wasn't long before they would turn their backs on me. I feel terrible now, especially since at some point in the near future we have to take them across country. I absolutely do not want to be the person putting them in the carriers again. I need to figure out how to get someone else to do that so my wife and I can bring them with us. Here they are in a happier time. Noel is on top. Jingles is in the tube. ![]()

They own the place, maybe you should have left them there and you guys move with the in-laws. It would appear that could have been less stressful for Noël & Jingles ![]()

^You're probably right. I had no idea the cats would be the most trying part of the move.

Kitty downers for one. Helps get them in the carrier and will make the trip easier. I did it in 2013. We went through several moves, just me and the cats. Mine actually travelled pretty well. 4 different places to live in about 3 months. Each time they hid, were pissed, etc. then they settle in. Try wrapping them in a towel and put the carrier on its end so you can drop them in and use gravity to your advantage.

Once a year we take "Queen Caca" to the vet... in the carrier.
We bring the carrier out 2-3 days before so she can sniff it and "kind" of settle down before D day... The best carrier open at both ends so you can almost turn it into a game, as they walk trough it, close the head side then the butt side. Not too happy, growl all the way to the vet (5 minutes away) but quiet as a cemetery while at the vet, meows on the way back and enjoy a few treats when she is release. All forgotten the next day.

Head first is always a no go. Place carrier with opening facing up. Wrap cat in towel like mummy. Drop in. I moved 4 cats from NY to TX. Used the Mastiffs old dog crate. Took up most of the space in the back of the Tahoe but there was room for all of them plus food / water bowls plus a litter box. For the 2 nights we had to stay over in hotels it was simple. Slide crate with cats in it out of the truck, carry to the room. The only issue with that is most airlines have a limit of two animals per flight. If someone else is bringing an animal on board you have a problem.

![]() ![]() Well, I guess I better finally post to this thread... This is Chester, one of two cats. He's my mouser and shop buddy. Very loyal guy, sleeps by (on) my feet most nights. He "came with" the house we bought from my Grand parents 6 years ago. He was here when we moved in, but not Gramdma's. We figured neighbor's cat, but the first rainy winter he was cuddled on our porch...no home. We started feeding him and talking nice. The rest is history. 😄 I'll put up some pics of Oliver our (mostly indoors) Orange Tabby later. He's a sweet lap cat! PS, Ya, he ate this one whole 😕 Most often stops about the entrails with the bigger rats. How do they do that! Yuck!! LOL Last edited by Cooper911SC; 09-29-2016 at 08:24 PM.. |

![]() Here's Oliver, doing what he usually does. 😄 His nick name is "Tiny cat". He was a kitten rescue from our animal shelter. He's a 4 year old big boy now! We had another orange tabby, Bert. A (former) friend of ours was staying with us in 2012 and watching the place while we went to PCA Parade in Salt Lake. He didn't listen when we warned to put cats in at night...hungry Coyote ate Bert! Sad day, but we love Oliver now. |

![]() Never had cats before I moved in with my wife. We're on numbers 5&6 now. This is Suki who is missing Momma while my wife is away for the week. Shes a mouser though she doesn't eat em. Can't get her interested in gophers. An absolute menace to hummingbirds! ![]()

They do eventually get over it...
When I moved cross country my two cats (I had two then, a third came along later) rode with me the entire way in a moving truck. Noisy, loud, etc. also an accident mid-way. I thought they'd hate me for life. As soon as I got where I was going they popped out and started exploring like nothing had ever happened. Maybe I'm just lucky. As soon as they figured out that I still was the keeper of their food, water and litter box it was all good. My upcoming move is going to be a lot longer but I'm just going to take them on a plane with me this time. The part that sucks is there's a mandatory quarantine period in HI (they're rabies free and take keeping it that way quite seriously). I should be able to get it down to five days and visit until they're released but it'll still be hard on them. None of us are as young as we once were... |

Our Kiki went in yesterday for 3 teeth extractions. Poor girl.... her brains were so scrambled when I picked her up post-op. She's getting back to normal this morning, but still a bit wonky.
