No power to starter after sitting

Hey Guys-
Tried to turn the car over yesterday after a long hiatus of not driving it for a year.

Batter was dead so I put a charger on it. I turned the key and got dash lights but no crank. Then nothing, no dash lights, no crank, no fuel pump. Replaced the battery with a new one and now nothing from the switch at all. No life.

Any thoughts?

My first thought is its a coincidental ignition switch failure but I don't know what else to check.

How can I test the switch. I don't know which pins are which.

HELP

E

Probably should look at the fuse panel and do a continuity check. Is power getting anywhere to the car.

Some are switched when the ignition is in the accessory position (ACC) , others both ACC and RUN positions.

You'll need a manual with electrical diagrams.

Yes you may have a bad switch, and checking continuity at the fuse panel will be the first indicator.

But I'd also watch out for hidden shorts while you are doing this. Certainly don't want you to have a fire.

Wiggle yellow and yellow/white wire connections at starter solenoid....by hand (not pliers) so long as your battery is connected.

With a circuit diagram (one available on the Pelican website for early cars like yours) you can figure out which fuses in the panel in the trunk are always hot, and which are switched. First off, check to see that you have 12-13 volts from the battery plus to a ground (not the battery). That is a rough check for whether the battery ground is good.

Then start checking the various large red wires which connect to the top of the fuse holders for 12-13 volts. Some of these are "always on." If none are, perhaps the positive clamp which attachés to the battery is bad. It can happen - corrosion can get in there, and not all crimps are created equal.

A master mechanic much wiser then me has told me to conduct a thorough check of the battery condition and critical grounds before jumping to the complicated stuff.

Saw an experienced mechanic take a non starting X3 BMW and connected a jumper cable to the engine and the body. It started.

Grounds are underrated.

Check the plug connector in the engine bay for power and continuity.
