78-79 911sc fuel pump NLA. What are my options?

I've been trying to get a replacement pump for my 78SC. Ordered the correct part from our host. The picture shows the pump with the long neck that has the internal check valve but thats not the one you get.
Seems Bosch has superseded part numbers and the new line of pumps do not exactly match the old. The new pump comes with screw on ends, and input bib and an output thread to which you need to screw on your banjo bolt. So there's no check valve internal. I have a later model (80-83) external screw on check valve but as you folks know its 12mm and my banjo is 10mm. Ugh.

So now I don't know what to do. I did a quick search and see a few sketchy offerings for the correct pump online. So take my chances? Any other options? Anyone know where I can get a 10mm external check valve? I really dont want to replace the tunnel fuel lines.

BTW, the correct fuel pump for my 78SC is Bosch PN 580-254-984. If you order a porsche pump number 91135606607 you will now get a Bosch 580 464 202 which will not work with a 78-79sc. Im pretty sure you 80-83 folks can use it with your external check valve.

Thanks all.

-Pete

Been there, very annoying to fit. Gotta be an aftermarket supplier like URO that has the correct looking pump. 911 guys are fussy. I need one for my '79.

Searching Worldpac, I find VEMO brand that appears the same as original '78 911. Also fits a 78 928, which uses a CIS system like the 911, and others. I ordered one and should have it monday. We'll see. VEMO # V10-09-0835. Lots on EBAY if you enter that number.

Installed it today. Came with a 12mm external check valve, so I carefully reamed out the 10mm banjo, holding it lightly with a pair of curved jaw visegrips so it didn't move and a tapered reamer in a slow turning air drill. Reamed until the check valve slipped in, a little on each side, leaving thin flat sides for brass sealing washers. Smoothed the sides with a fine file. No leaks. Been doing this for quite a while so the check valve can. E retained for good hot starts, though got some crap about the edges being too thin to seal. Just don't go overboard on the reaming and all is good.

Pete,

I have a new FP 580-254-984 with extended neck for my SC. Have you tried to buy the FP using the Bosch ID # instead of the designated Porsche part #? I never used the Porsche part # ever when buying parts for CIS. I simply use the Bosch part #.

Tony,

Yes I’ve searched the Bosch part number and all major retailers are out of stock and their replacements are generic Bosch pumps without the internal check valve.

Recent discussion here...there is a single replacement for the SC fuel pumps, check the Bosch partnumbers and their compatibility list:

Pete,

If you decide to install a Bosch FP without an integrated check valve, you need to install a separate CV. And it is not easy to find a 12-mm/10-mm CV that could accommodate your 10-mm banjo line. But the 12-mm/12-mm CV is readily available.

In the absence of a 12-mm/10-mm CV, a good option is use an adaptor (coupler) to connect the FP CV with your banjo fitting. I will look for some fittings to mock-up a set up you could improvise to utilize the existing 10-mm banjo fuel line.

Mock-up Demonstration.........

Pete,

If you choose to retain your 10-mm banjo fuel line, I would use a coupler (12-mm x 1.5) from Belmetric to connect the FP check valve (12-mm x 1.5). First, this is mock-up how a FP-984 (with integrated check valve) connects with a 10-mm banjo fitting used in early SC CIS.

Shown below are the different components used with FP-984 to connect a 10-mm banjo fitting.

Assembled unit:

A typical Bosch FP without integrated check valve:

Tony that looks like a solution. So at the 12mm cv. Just add an additional 12mm banjo + sealing ring to cover the holes and cap it off?
I was able to get my old pump working pretty well but want to get a spare asap.

Thanks!

Pete

Pete,

Go over the pictures I posted and read the labels. I was using a 10-mm banjo fitting to demonstrate the 10-mm banjo you have in your car. I thought you did not want to convert to 12-mm banjo for the fuel line?

Since you have a 12-mm /12-mm check valve already and you want to keep the 10-mm banjo in your delivery line, all you need is to buy the 12-mm x 1.5 coupler and use your 12-mm/10-mm banjo bolt (you should have this already). See picture above.

The only missing part is the coupler which you could get from Belmetric for $7 and additional washers. The 12-mm/10-mm banjo bolt and cap should be available from your old FP set-up. Hope we are on the same page. If I was not clear, please let me know.

Many years ago, I replaced my Bosch fuel pump with a Walbro, which has been working fine to this day. It did not have a check valve, but that hasn’t been a major issue. Not sure if those are still available, but that may be an option.

Does Walbro fuel pump have check valve??

Walbro CIS Fuel Pump

As mentioned by Aurel - I too used the Walbro, model GCL604 as a direct-fit replacement for my OEM Bosch CIS fuel pump.

Here's a thread discussing CIS pump options and the Walbro Walbro Fuel Pump ???

I used it for ~ 4 or so years then switched to carbs and swapped to a low PSI Pierburg pump. The Walbro with all fittings is somewhere in my garage, PM me if you are interested in buying it.

If you opt for an aftermarket pump (URO, Walbro or other brand) - I do recommend you find one that retains / uses the original fittings (like the Walbro GCL604 or URO High Output CIS pump with banjo fitting). The OEM rubber fuel lines are metric, and adapting to male barbed fitting with hose clamp is an exercise you would prefer to avoid.

Good luck,

My only question is what covers the holes in the 12mm check valve?

Pete,

Hope the set-up shown below could explain how I would do to tackle your problem.

The 12-mm x 1.5 coupler is available from Belmetric for $7. Use the 30-mm long coupler. For the space between the 12-mm FP check valve, I would use a 12-mm ID bushing. A plugged 12-mm banjo fitting will work too.

I have been using these plugged 8-mm banjo fittings (shown above) for many years now for my testing and troubleshooting. One was brazed with metal and the other one using JBWeld.

Tony

Edit:
Use the shorter 20 or 25 mm coupler instead of 30 mm (too long).

Perfect! We’re on the same page. I just need the Belmetric coupler and a 12mm bushing to cover the output holes on the 12mm check valve. Everything else I have. This will let me use a ‘80-‘83 SC fuel pump on my ‘78-‘79 car with a 10mm banjo.
Now I just hope it all fits with my already modded FP installation where I added a pre pump filter .
Thanks again for the solution. I hope this helps others in the same predicament.

-Pete

Theiceman,

That is one of the Bosch Fuel Pumps with the long neck with built-in check valve. The other one is -979. For the early SC’s with 10-mm banjo bolt on the fuel delivery line, these are the recommended fuel pumps to use.

Could you confirm that the Bosch part # is 0 560 254 984 and not 0 580 254 984? Thanks.

Tony
