Dunno, depends what's in the car...

A good base, as we all know, can be between $10K (tired SC) and 20K (nice carrera)

A 3.6 motor is easily $10K, right ? Not sure if that even covers the whole install...

A nice full body paint job is $10K these days, unless you do it yourself, and there's all the seals and stuff you will want to replace...

There are about $5000 of backdate parts just for the outside... No telling about the inside and special stuff like diffs, wheels, torsion bars, shocks, brakes, roll cages....

If you are sitting on the fence, toying with the idea of backdating your car, the amounts mentioned may indeed sound ludicrous... But if you are in the trenches and currently doing a backdate (not on the cheap like me), you'll know that a car such as Curtis' is worth buying for that money because yours is gonna cost as much (and you'll have to wait a year)

It's just a matter of personal preference after that.... we're talking 993 money, I bet Curtis' car is way faster and way more "raw". Still is 1/5th of the cost of a real RS...

Me, everytime I thought something was nice but overpriced in the porsche world, I've ended up being proven wrong a year or 2 later ;-) And I'm still not learning !!! ;-)

This one's a keeper! It would be foolish for one to backdate with the intent to sell & recoup. If you calculate all the labor and $$ thrown at these projects - it just doesn't pencil out.
It's all self gratification, baby. What else could I ask for; G50, 3.2, galvanized body, upgraded suspension, the classic look... it's all good.

It's all good alright. The backdated hotrods are the best of both worlds- old school looks and feel, new school performance.

I agree it doesn't make good financial sense to do your own backdate if you're not willing to do alot of the grunt work. Even then it costs you- time like Souk said. Hence the general rule of thumb applies, like buying a race car, buy someone else's project- either complete or close to it so you can save on the cost of all the labor + parts costs.

I don't know. $50K just seems quite a bit up the ladder. I'd expect to see a regeared trans and LSD for that kind of money. I know JTO's car didn't have that work done. How about Curtis'?

Great looking car, Greg and Curtis. BEAUTIFUL. Are those VTO Performance Superlite wheels?

So I ended up selling mine in one day. I got very close to my asking price. I wish I didn't have to sell in but things change.

The car obviously had a lot of appeal and struck a cord with someone right away. Don't know what else to say. A 993 of equal cost has a lot of appeal but are just to complex for me. I love the simplicity of early 911s and hate the complexity of new cars.

Now I am having second and third thoughts... The thing is sitting in my garge looking lovely. I made the mistake of sitting in it last night. Pulled the door shut and it made that 911 door sound; "SHLINK". I sat and felt the wheel and smelled that smell. I nearly teared up. So, it sits and waits for the DAS truck to come. And I avoid the garage whenever possible. I don't want to see or smell it.

There won't be a 911 in my near future. Focus on the family and weathering the dismal wood products business is the focus for now.

Sorry for the loss Troy - I wish you didn't have to let it go. That is one beautiful car! That smell though - I know what you mean; I stick my head through the driver's side window and take a big whiff now and then. whoaaaa.
Regards,
Brian

That they are. . . 17x7.5 w/ 225x45s in front and 17x9 w/ 255x40s out back. Got them as a set from our host. Tires are Yokohamas. Thanks Kevin/Keith.

Shame. BTDT and it sucks. I blame the assbite money changers for the problems we have in this country and have nothing but contempt. I really hope you get a replacement that is better in many ways. Life should be that way, especially if you're a dedicated worker. My best to you.

LSD & Gears

Per Kevins assertion about the $$ ladder. My thoughts were more about the driving experience and NOT the twice a year track ventures. I opted to have Cerullo make custom seats, Sorensons here in Pasadena make my door panels custom and German RS carpet kit. Bilsteins,monoballs,31 & 23 hollow torsions, sway aways, Darren @ West End corner balance & lower and align, BreyKrause harness mount, Patrick LTWT flywheel and race clutch, custom DME chip, etc, etc, etc. For me personally, when I get to drive this car 95% of the time is "on-the-street". I did think about LSD, but G-50 works great with the 3.6 torque curve and will give you, the driver, a viceral ride like NO other early 911.
These cars here on the latest thread are really progressive pieces of Porsche sport purpose karma. It's ALL good

ultimate backdate with a twist

Hey guys! I'm a newbie!! I really love this forum and have been reading it for over a year. I'm glad I finally joined. Anyway, I'm building my seventh or eigth Porsche 911 now and this time it's going to be really over the top.

I am backdating a 964 to a 73 RS body style and putting a turbo motor in it. It'll be a real Frankenstein, but very unique and fun to drive. My 2 favorite Porsches are the CTR yellow Bird and the 73 carrera RS. This is like a cross between the two. Narrow body, 500 hp turbo motor, beautifully understated....yet with all the modern stuff!

The only 964 to 73 backdate I've seen is that white C4 to RSR backdate. Anyone else have any pics of such a car? Also, I don't want it to be an exact RS replica, so I'm thinking of deleting the silver trim. What do you guys think?

Check out the British magazine 911 & Porsche World for past issues (like this one http://www.911porscheworld.com/shop.aspx?dept_id=108&item_id=1045 ). There have been a number of companies over there that have done this with great success. 964 chassis presents some "challenges", but if you're not looking for an "exact" replica (a wise decision in my mind) you can work around them.

Also lots of good stuff on this board, just takes more searching. But hey, the holidays are coming up so there's plenty of time, right?

Yes! I will be websurfing like crazy! I've seen the PS Auto 964, actually. There's a funny look about the bottom rocker that I don't like. Also, the fuchs look strange too. So does the back bumper. I don't want an exact replica, but the powder blue 964 with black engine still looks too much like a 964.

And these are some of the challenges I was talking about...

I think what's under the rockers on the 964 is not as "pretty" as what's under the rockers for an earlier 911, so I think your choices are a lot of filling and painting or using the 964 rocker covers. (..or replace them with and earlier one, I guess..)

My understanding is real Fuchs don't fit with the newer 964 suspension, so you have to get "fakes". I know there are other options for good looking Fuchs...I wonder if Lindsey Racing can make them for a 964? Otherwise you could go with some kind of Fikse-like wheel...I think they look pretty ok on an early car.

I think the back bumper on that one is made to cover the exhaust. A "normal" rear bumper might look ok, just showing some muffler. Not a bad look on a hot rod.

All of the above is my understanding, but please note I'm not an expert. But I've thought of the same thing you're doing, so...I've "looked into it".

There is no doubt it will be a challenge to get the 964 to look like a 73 car on the outside. My body guy says he can get rid of the "shark's fin" no prob, but that the long nose conversion will require alot more......ie. universal seals and what not.

The motor that is available to me will have to be severely muffled (as I want this to be my daily driver....and my neighbors hate when I warm up my cars in the morning) and detuned. It is a 3.8 liter Protomotive twin tubo motor from a 993. My plan is to just run spring pressure/low boost, with a small intercooler that fits under the ducktail. It'll be the ultimate sleeper! I"ll keep everyone posted

Awesome!! I'm building one too. I think I've seen your car in Excellence. MOst outstanding!!! I plan on keeping my 964 retro more retro on the inside too. I'm putting in the old gauges and seats to match. I wish the Becker Mexico classic radio was available here in the states. That would be perfect (in my opinion) for a 964 based retro car
