Can any of you conversion guys please tell me what kind of flywheel you used to mate a 3.6 to a 915 tranny? Would be greate if you could tell me how many teeths the flywheel has.

tshebib 04-15-2012 12:27 PM

Here's a pic of the conversion kit from Timmons. I counted 58 teeth plus the gap. Hope this helps.

This thread has been useful! I need to figure out how to maintain the RSR look with my exhaust tips for my upcoming 3.6 conversion. The crab style doesn't work for me.

Have you thought about something like this? You could probably weld new flanges onto your existing muffler to have it mate up to 3.6L heat exchangers...

In 2008, Chris Powell, of Bellevue WA installed a 1996 3.6 Varioram motor in my 1972 911T/ST. The engine was completely rebuilt by Monty Jarvies with Carillo rods, RS valves, 993 Sport cams, solid lifters, race springs, Ti retainers, chipped DME, headers and a Sycip rally muffler. On a rolling dyno, we achieved 270 hp @ 6100 rpm and 258 ft-lb torque @ 4200 rpm - at the wheels. Assuming a 15% drivetrain loss, that's 310 hp and 296 ft-lb of torque (or 318 hp and 303 ft-lb, depending on how you figure it). It's run great for the past seven years, turn key reliable. The car has traveled up and down the west coasrt several times and won its class at the 2012 Porsche Parade Autocross, third fastest overall.

I'll join in, haven't come across this thread before.
This is a '92 3.6 in my '88 Carrera.
Engine management is MS3X driving 12 Toyota COPs.
Triumph Daytona triple throttle bodies mounted on custom intake runners feed in the air.
Engine-mounted oil cooler and custom ductwork takes care of cooling. Simple, eh!

same place

My Instant G 3.6 motor has been on order since mid April:D.
Installed a 72 row oil cooler with AN-16 oil lines as low and far from the front tub wall as possible behind the front spoiler for optimized air flow.
Sachs Power Clutch and some 1 3/4" Headers are next.

It all started when my 3 liter broke a head stud, the sound it made when it fell out was just like the sound of a big pile of $$$ hitting the floor:rolleyes:

Just read this entire thread. Absolutely mesmerizing billjam. Where does one even BEGIN to learn the skill set you bring to the table? Between your fab skills and overall knowledge, it's unbelievable. I feel like you could be a lead engineer on any number of professional race teams.

Maybe for a race car but I would be hesitant any longer to convert any air cooled 911 from it's original engine even if a lowly 2.7 Considering the huge appreciation I,ve seen in the last few years it will probably cost you a bunch of money to lower the value of your car.
Last one of 2 that I swapped to a 3.6 was a 1980 coupe ,the other one was a 1977 3.0 Carrera targa about 12 years ago when the average 911 was worth about 10k. Sold it in 2010 for 18 k and bought a high miles 993 for 19k. Sold the 993 last year for $40k Now look at prices of stock cars.

its all about the fun, not the financials.

Kennedy Engineered Products in Palmdale CA makes conversion flywheels and clutches. I have done business with them for many years.

Mike,
Back in '92 when I was doing my 3.6 update into my '80SC there were no transplant
products on the market available. I had to do all the wiring, clutch/flywheel, etc by my
own jerry rig engineering. I even added an on engine oil cooler as I knew just the front Carrera cooler would not be enough.

As far as a conversion flywheel, the engine I got was an '89 C4 motor which had a normal flywheel, not the dual mass one. I looked it over and took it to my local machine shop and had them redrill it to use a 915 pressure plate. Easy Peasy, problem solved!

That flywheel by the way is still available Part #: 964-102-239-00-M260

I have read that the conversion flywheel from your favorite supplier PMS (lol)
Had clearance problems with the flywheel sensor.

How are you coming with your cruise control retrofit ? Let me know if you need any
assistance.

Best,
Grant
