				Engine Drop Ooops!

The first thing I should do is change my user ID to IDIOT. What is the possible damage I caused by letting the motor drop WITHOUT support? I undid the two rear support bolts w/o any support under the motor and "bam!", the motor dropped till it was about six inches off the floor.

I quickly jacked it back up, hooked everything back together and she seems to drive and shift fine. It's a 3.2 with G50. Please tell me I didn't damage anything!!!!! (idiot!)

Whooops! I am not sure about the g-50 but the shift rod could have bent, I guess it shifts fine though? I am glad it didn't apparently wreck anything. Welcome to the board and post a pic of your car!

For a 1st post, this seems odd. Whatever. Yes, there may be some collateral damage. Check all flexible connections to the motor including fuel lines, throttle cable, wiring, heater hoses, oil lines and more that I can't think of right now. All together, these things can hold a motor up for a minute or so. Maybe longer, but they can be stressed.

I am sure there are many things more to check, someone can chime in, but I think the first thing to check is the shift rod and tranny mount bar.

Now do you feel a little shaky driving hard around with your engine hanging on 2 bolts? or 4 bolts for engine and tranny?

Wow - that was quick, four replies in under 10-minutes! Am I the only person on earth to have ever done this? Should I sell the Porsche b4 I cause more damage? What a loser. From what I've heard so far, the shift rod may be the main concern? If so, is that hard to fix/replace? Any other possible damage?

I have read a couple of posts where guys haven't installed their mounts correctly and the motor dropped, and it sounded like they were moving at the time!

Good luck, welcome and post a picture of your ride!

I was going to mention the transmission mounts and shift rod, but others were faster. Now, if I may ask, what were you trying to achieve by unbolting the motor mounts? Did you really want to drop the motor?

My guess is you got lucky and everything is fine. The shifter might be bent, but I would guess that the tranny mounts twisted and the engine jammed on the fan or some other part at the back end.

The engine requires a bit of manipulation to pull it out, I am hoping this worked in your favor.

You aren't the first person to have admitted to this on this board. If it is shifting fine I doubt you even bent the shift rod. Check all your other connections, but I suspect everything is just fine.

you might have pulled a heater hose or 2 off where they attach to the chassis so you may have less or no heat.

if the rubber S hose from the oil tank to engine is 20 years old or more, it can have cracks that you can't see until too late and starts leaking. also the thermal time switch wire terminals will pull off at a certain point, and the throttle linkage can be bent a little. |

I was in the stupid club this weekend too. Didn't tighten my valve covers enough. When I hit the highway it looked like my entire car was on fire - oil POURING all over my SSIs. What an idiot.

Hope everything is ok - sounds like it is. I guess you are only stupid if you make the same mistake twice (or three times ).

That's what I was thinking also.. 1st post - "Hey. I just undid my two motor mount bolts and my motor fell out"... apparently just for the heck of it? Only six bolts hold the door on, just so you know..

You will accrue bad karma until you post a picture. At that point, folks will start telling you it's not so bad. Check the soft connections and all will be well...
