What beautiful country and perfect weather! Thanks for taking the time to document more than just the motor. I can't wait to learn what you have pieced together about its journey from Zuffenhausen to Uber's garage. If metal could only talk...

Part of the trip was reuniting with VW.
Note the mid-engine configuration. ![]() The family Kombi with child seat was put in service. With no small amount of careful effort, the engine was transferred to the maw of the Toyota. ![]() We drove: Denver, CO, Cheyenne, WY, Laramie, Rawlins, Lander, alongside the Wind River (mountain) Range, Moran, Jackson. With side trips to Briggs, ID and Yellowstone N.P. and returned: Jackson, WY, Pinedale, Rock Springs, WY, NE corner of Utah, NW corner of CO, all unpaved roads, Craig, CO, Steamboat Springs, Watch big forrest fire, Winter Park, Denver. Five days, four states, 1500 miles, perfect weather and some of the most beautiful country ever seen. The 2.5 kid was wonderful. The best quote (to a waiter) was: "Excuse me sir, may I have something to drink." (meaning milk) Yes, that is an actual quote, un-prompted. BTW, the borrowed Toyota is actually a fast and smooothe Benz-like 4-door, 5-passenger sedan with a HUGE trunk. 23 mpg. Even with mid-engine Spyder engine, not 911 performance. I need one. With this in the 'trunk'. ![]() ![]() Best, Grady

Grady,
Fun trip. In the late 70's I lived in Kemmerer, WY. Know lots of those roads.

Man this is such a COOL story! Ive been trying to get photos/VIN of a 911 owned by the family of a fellow student here. Its a beat up 73 911 with Carrera on the side, according to her. But man, all those engines and parts! Thats incredible.

Grady,
I appreciate your vast knowledge and respect your right to privacy, but there are allot of questions left unanswered and its driving me nuts. I feel connected to this story because my father-in-law was a "guardian" of 550-006 for nearly 20 years, and from him Ive heard all about how he was unable to find one of these 4 cam engines, looking from the late sixties to the 80's. So in tribute to Paul Harvey, whats the rest of the story?

I'm no expert...but IIRC, a 1973 Carrera (if authentic) is pretty rare and valuable. If you ever get the chance to get some pictures of this girl's car, open up a new thread and post the pix. I'm sure the experts would like to see if it really is the goods or not.

While we may get carried away with Porsche 692 engines, western Wyoming disserves special note.
If (world wide) you have not seen this little area of the USA, you are missing an important part of the world. These two Parks (Yellowstone and Grand Teton) are among the most special. We need to have a Porsche gathering here. I did see some wild pelicans here and about 20 911s loose in the area. There are a few 4-cams (including a Spyder) hiding in the works. Jackson is a very special place. While Eastern Wyoming has its special charm … ![]() Wind River valley, South of Lander. We can only imagine what this person must have experienced over a 96-year lifetime. ![]() Fort Washakie, Wind River Indian Reservation. When you drop into the Snake River valley and THE GRAND TETON looms … ![]() No image can reflect seeing the “Alps of North America” with your own eyes. The haze here are due to prescribed burns outside the Park. Pelican rbuswell swapped the Tundra for my 911SC for the week of our trip. ![]() We both came out ahead ... ![]() ...and uber got the engine to Jackson. "Now you know the rest of the story." Paul Harvey (and yes, I listened as I traveled the West.) ...but there is more to come... ...and it gets better yet. ![]() The real challange will be to find more of the past 50-year history of this engine. If only metal could talk. It is up to us to find this history. This engine is going to live to race another day. Best, Grady

I'd bet there is a wiki on Chief Washakie -- there is a ton of oral history and legend on the guy. He is beloved by the white pop'n & his grandson is the current President (chief) of the Tribe.
If you can't find anything, I'll be glad to tell you how Crow Heart Butte got its name. |

Only a few more:
There are no fences between us and this 2000#+ guy. It looks like he could do serious damage (like turning over the truck) if aggravated. ![]() There were about five tourists just out of the image. They would not have been able to escape. More travelog ![]() Snake River just East of the Grand Teton. ![]() ![]() OK, here it is. Bill Doyle (R), Tim (patient husband), Pelican ‘uber’ aka Melissa and Brian Moore Going on the dyno ![]() Cams in time, ignition works, good cranking compression, good cylinder leak, nothing wrong and … IT RUNS Bill and uber ![]() "Zee mice run around in here and the stuffa comes out there." More to come. Best, Grady

There is also a late 1957 356A 1600S Speedster - pushrod, not Carrera - darn. It is an unrestored, nice car. It has 356C brakes with the complete A brakes and wheels as spares. Most looks reasonably original with some ‘restoration’ done 30+ (40?) years ago. Does not appear rusty or having had a serious crash. I’ll get to a more detailed inspection soon. I suspect the engine will run properly. I’m going to teach uber how to install new carb gaskets, fuel pump gaskets, fuel petcock parts, service the distributor, change oil, check valve clearance change transmission oil and bleed brakes. With fresh gas and a new battery, it should drive. More to come. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() more

Thanks Grady!
I've really enjoyed this thread, all 11 pages. Interested to see what Euber has planned for the motor and car
