Has anyone ever backdated further - i.e. instead of making an SC/Carrera into an RS, making it into a true narrow bodied car - like an R or an S?

Hers's mine. From a 75 to a hot rod. ...Not trying to be anything specific, just a tribute to the old style.

Great thread! Love the backdated cars. I've been looking for my first 911 and really wanting a long hood hot rod.

Am I correct in thinking that any backdate to create the "longhood" look requires cutting off and replacing the front bulkhead? I'm talking specfically of backdating a '84-'89 Carrera or a 964. No way around this...correct?

no, you are not correct. For the front, it's entirely bodywork. There are hoods offered that would allow for a 100% reversible backdate. For the front, at least.

This is a special long hood with short hood liner. For converting 74' or later chassis to a 73' Carrera RS look without having to change the front tub panel. ------------------------------------------------------- I really like Getty products, and this will save a lot of $$$ at the body shop, but after looking at and comparing it to one done right, I decided it was worth the $$$ to go all the way.

Well that's great news...it seems like every thread I read on creating longhoods used substantial fabrication work up front. Good to know that's not required.

I would not say that substantial fabrication work is not required.

Having done a backdate once with a fiberglass long hood, I would not do it again. Fiberglass and low crown panels are not a good combination. Disclaimer: I've not tried a carbon fiber version, and that could be a lot better -- if it's 'real' carbon fiber. Other changes to the chassis to do the backdate are quite minor. You can do them yourself in a weekend.

I fully plan to have Esposito paint and install a steel hood in the upcoming winter.

I'm wondering why so many people take the time/money to do a beautiful complete backdate but than use the wrong mirrors and wheels. It makes a very realistic looking long hood look like, well a backdate. IMO.

from my position...
Couldn't afford those 7 inch by 15 fuchs for the back, don't like silver and black. Like Durrants but not the fact I can't see behind so made a new mount. You might also notice the "wrong" pedal box, cage, headlamp covers, door handles, airfilters , dizzy, arch flares, wheelbase... etc etc ..... ![]() ![]() They are "correct" NSU front lamps though....they were cheap ![]() ![]() Andy Last edited by haasad; 06-04-2013 at 01:03 PM.. |

I suspect FG or CF makes no difference if polyester is being used. It's the polyester that is shrinking causing issues.
