Quiet muffler that doesn't kill power, does one exist?

With that setup you could install almost any third party muffler(s) you wanted. I guess I missed the track car part.

Yes, I can make any muffler work, just need one that does the "magic" of making power while knocking sound down to sud-90db..

I recently switched from the Flowmaster to a (smaller) Magnaflow, and was surprised that the new setup is quite a bit quieter. One other change is 993 headers instead of B&Bs. But the Magnaflow did very well on the dyno and -- especially on track days -- I actually wish it were a little bit louder.

Old Flowmaster: big.



Magnaflow: small.

Also need to get an opinion on which way to point the tailpipes to minimize any readings. I was thinking straight down but then there may be an amplification bouncing off the asphalt. Set them the way Jack has them and it may be best as they only measure from one side.. if the muffler is quiet enough it won't matter.

Yes, absolutely, and even in daily use in some applications.

Electronic "anti-noise" engine mufflers have been around for quite some time now. It's possible they could even be switched off and on if one wished to do so. Most commonly used on diesel engine power generators in urban areas, QUIET zones, hospitals, etc.

for lime rock, I would dare say point towards the passenger's side.....most times I've seen them taking measurements, it has been along the driver's side....also, this will be quieter for the driver.

agreed, down will amplify the sound

you could point them towards each other, and hope they will be cancel each other out

This is my Lime Rock set up. The car has headers and a M&K RSR muffler. I got a cap for one side, an elbow, and a baffle.. I can obviously switch the cap and elbow side to side, aim the elbow etc..


Also on the headers I had v band clamps installed so I can easily put on megaphones..

Model 11386 - currently $81 at Amazon and it's stainless.

There are bigger models, but I needed to squeeze between the outlets of 993 headers.

Whoa, it sure looks like it. Shoots the gasses thru the lower pipe right at the exit.

Weren't you using the Dynomax 17725 with the B&Bs?
If so which was quieter?

I would think I would use the biggest one I could fit, similar in size to the FM 80..

No, I had a Flowmaster. I never took measurements, but my belief is that the Magnaflow is quieter. Again, though, it could also be because the 993 headers might be quieter than the B&Bs.

The muffler Steve is using looks to be from a late model 911GT3. Not an inexpensive solution, and when the valves open, not quiet. Very cool street system though.
