Can anyone reccomend a 12v shop in the OC to remove an old alarm?

I have a 1980 with a period Clifford alarm that is still installed. I would like to have someone that really knows what they are doing remove all remnants of this alawm before it decides to leave me stranded somewhere.
Does anyone have any recommendations about who you would take an SC to for this type of work?

I had a similar situation, so I called my mechanic (Dave at TRE) and asked him for a recommendation for a competent alarm shop. He sent me to International Auto Radio in North Hollywood, which I know is a bit far for you.

My suggestion would be to do what I did...call your mechanic and ask for a referral to an alarm installer. If they can install 'em, then likely they can uninstall 'em as well.

Just find a stereo shop run by a guy who has been in business for 25 years. He put them in; he can take them out. I would also suggest that he worked on Porsches, not Pontiacs in the day. I now have a box with a lot of Clifford "stuff".

Curious as to how the removal went? I started chasing down a low voltage to the solenoid issue yesterday and discovered this under the passenger side floorboard:





The car sometimes will not spin/engage the starter. Usually, it starts up after a short while or if I roll the car a few feet. I've got 11v coming out of the switch yellow wire, discovered the yellow wire was spliced into a purple wire that ran off to the passenger side. Only 9 volts coming back from where the purple wire goes. Under the car, the solenoid saw 4 volts on the yellow wire.

Initially, having seen the voltage drop where the purple alarm wire splits in, I thought I could remove it and be good. But when I turned over the floorboard to see where the purple wire went and found that, I decided to leave it as is, not knowing what else wanted to see voltage from that in the start position.

There is a large bundle of wires coming into the area - any idea on how much of that is factory and how much is alarm? Does anybody have any literature/documentation on these? The car is an 82, but I think the faded letters on one date code said 84, so that narrows the era down a bit.

The key pad says Becker, but I'm told it is the same as an old Clifford.

I don't think any of this is factory.

The factory alarm unit is located in the front boot, behind the fesh air plenum.

Also, the activation mechanism is the key in the driver's side door.

Wow KJ that looks like a crazy set up. Does your car have power windows and door locks? If it does they probably hooked it to the alarm to make all of that activate via the remote. Very 1980's with all those relays. Since I can see no thick wires going into the alarm brain any function including flashing lights ran off those relays. Best bet would be to find the one that worked the starter kill and jump it. Looks like its the one in the middle not connected to the others. The 2 smaller Bosch looking ones are connected to each other so not that one and the 4 up top are not it either. I have not seen a set up like that in 20 years. Well done for the time period.

Wow, just saw the other Bosch style relay on the left in the middle. Either one of those two solo ones could control your starter or fuel pump kill. Best way would be to unplug and see if it still starts. If car does not start then you found the culprit.

If they guy that installed it was really good or a MacGyver type he would of cut both the starter and fuel pump so maybe that's why there are 2 solo relays.

I defanged my Clifford alarm that was dealer installed on my 79 SC. I bought the car new and still have it. It is stock otherwise and I kept it that way. Recently the alarm acted up and I was no longer able to disarm it. So I went under the hood and figured out what was going on. Basically there is a sealed aluminum box, about 6 X 6 X 1 inches, screwed to the panel in forward of the dash board. from there a multi-wire, multi-pin, rectangular connector coupling connects to various positions and wires at the Porsche fuse panel. I just disconnected that coupling and the alarm was disabled and the car functions as if there never was an alarm installed. It was that simple!

The car has power windows, but not power locks. There isn't any reason for the factory harness to be long enough to reach this area, so I'm guessing that harness is all installed with the alarm. When I have a few days (this is my DD) I may trace that big log of wires out and see where it connects.... For now, letting sleeping dogs lie. Would be nice to find a wiring diagram for the alarm, but it seems to be the one thing not on the internet.

As posted - an old timer or a sharp noob can pull this out for you quick.

I pulled mine out of my 81 ten years ago and it had electric door locks and seat sensors. It took time. It was called CodeAlarm, I think. The key was finding where it spliced into the starting circuit. Once that was reconnected as original the rest was just pulling out the parts. Pulling the door skins off was a PITA.

+1 On leaving it alone if its your DD. Do you have a transmitter for the alarm or just the keypad?

Actually that saving grace in my case is that the keypad was not installed next to the ignition switch, cutting part of the shroud, but inside the ash tray! What a relief!
