I am going to ask did you happen to drop anything into the suction of the oil pump or can you look down in there with your boroscope also look around the intermediate shaft gearing to see if anything dropped down in there your valve train is not the cause so start looking at other places if it stops in the same place which ever direction you go then you have something in a specific place use your scope to look every where possible before you start pulling heads.

see above for more infor, I posted more at the same time you did

You have something in some gearing or such and it doesn't make noise because it has oil on it and it is just sliding out of the way mark where it stops then turn the motor so it rotates freely and then stop it where it would normally have stopped then spin the motor on the stand several times in both directions and hope whatever is stuck in there will fall out to a place you can get it.

I would say you are right. There is def something it there. as I move the engine around sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt. Also, when it stops sometimes it stops in a different place the first time and then back to the original place. The only consistent thing is when I turn the engine counterclock wise until vertical, wait 10 seconds for what ever it is ( I think washer) to slide out of the way and then it will turn over as many times as I want. as soon at the engine is horizontal again it wont spin all the way around. The problem is to find out what it is and where and to def know its resolved.

I would say don't split the halves until you have to start with the chain housings and that gearing if you didn't find both locking pins from the cam sprockets then thats where I would start

911lvr 09-06-2011 02:53 PM

I did find both pins so I can rule that out at least.

Do the timing chains remain tight and do they still move when the crank rotates?

Remove distributor too and retry.

yes the chains are tight and move just fine although the cams arent not pinned right now.

After no luck finding the cause im just started taking it the rest of the way apart. Took the cams out tonight and pulled off the cam towers. Im soaking the headstuds in pb for a day or so before I attempt to take it the rest of the way apart.

I did find something pretty interesting. when I removed the timing chain idler arm on the right side the entire shaft it rides on just came out. it seems the small weld that held it in is broken. I know there is no way for that to move since its trapped between the two sides but im guessing that is not the best thing in the world to have that little bit of play.

to be continued..

gsmith660 09-07-2011 05:10 PM

That sucks I was hoping you would be able to get it to move where you could get to it!

trust me I tried.. many many times. Oh well at least this way I will know for sure and make sure even more things are done right. And the oil tubes needed new orings anyway.. trying to find the silver lining

gsmith660 09-07-2011 05:41 PM

Well do it right and take lots of pics for the record

Techne 09-07-2011 09:21 PM

hang in there, keep us posted on the mystery SmileWavy

j911brick 09-07-2011 09:47 PM

The idler post is just pressed in, not welded. Good thing you caught it because it was going to leak anyway, You should just be able to JBweld it, but if you can get a new chain box that would be better.

just some random pics for today while im waiting for the PB to soak in the head stud barrels

so im starting to amass quite the collection of zip lock bags with parts in them. all labeled so months form now when i put it back together ill know where they go!

Man this thing is nasty dirty..What is the best way to clean it? Im assuming the cam bearing are pressed in and I dont want to mess them up during the cleaning process. On a good note I can fix the oil tubes now.

Here are the super special rocker shaft leak deterrents!! Maybe I should sell them..lol

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1315500745.jpg

heads just sitting there soaking...waiting until I take them off. boy i hope I find something

which nasty dirt?

generally a wood popsickle stick as a scraper in danger areas or metal scraper in 'safe' areas, follow with water based and solvent based cleaners

the 1st real silver lining is that the motor will run for 200,000 miles or more w/o another overhaul

the 2nd is that it will make more hp; maybe a lot more depending on what you do to it

j911brick 09-08-2011 12:59 PM

There are no replaceable cam bearings. Ollies can clean that stuff up and make it new again.

911lvr 09-08-2011 04:25 PM

SUCCCCCESSSSSSSS!!! well I finally found my problem. There was a washer in number 5 which is where I thought the problem was.

What the hell is this on this stud????

dad911 09-08-2011 04:47 PM

Since you've got it this far apart, are you going to deal with the low compression(I think I remember 1 cylinder low?)? Did you ever do a leakdown?

911lvr 09-08-2011 04:57 PM

yeah 4 was low. originally I was fighting doing the rebuild but like you said. I have it this far down so im going to have to reevaluate. i keep hear the while you were in there saying.. I think we need to add 2 more..You got it down this far and you are going to need a special tool for that..lol
