Saving a 73 from the crusher...AGAIN
Since my last thread blew up along with my motor, I thought I would start a new one.
There won't be much to report until after the new year though. Here is the original build thread http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/626050-saving-73-crusher.html and here is the tantrum thread http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/886162-sending-73-crusher.html TO BE CONTINUED... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1449447528.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1441967211.jpg |
So I guess your not ready to just sell her off yet? ;) I'd love to see your car in person sometime. Maybe in the spring we can meet up if you're in the GTA.

$60k for the roller might motivate me. Otherwise I have too much unfinished business to walk away from it
|
I'll trade ya straight across, mine runs ad drives ;)

Subscribed!
Been wondering what you decided to do. |
and so it begins...
Engine apart
|
I most likely missed the post... but what happened? Engine blew up? Why?/How?
Any chance you can recap with a bit more detail? Or that is captured somewhere in the previous threads?? |
Good opportunity to put all the bad news in one place ;)
Most of it is included in the original build thread (consider this current thread you are reading as part II of the build) But fast forward through that thread and you will find things like this: (which earned its own thread) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/866360-danger-install-volt-meter-now.html and this post 628 Almost crushed the car. Phew. Caught it before the wheel fell off and this Uh oh! What happened now? But ultimately, this last page is the one that lead to the heavy lifting to be described in the thread that you are now reading: What's that noise? Which led to this speculation doom and gloom But ultimately, amongst all my pissing and moaning, Steve offered the best advice and that is what I am going to do Quote:

Okay... so I did read them all. I thought I had missed a post... I did go through those listed above when you first started this thread.
I got some additional gauges based on the situation you had with the battery... Back to the car and the engine issues, glad you decided to fix it instead of giving up on it. |
Such a great looking car; glad you decided to save it. Good luck as the search for the noise continues.....
|
Stay tuned for more details and more excitment as I document the steps :)

Welcome back with your '73! I won't forget your support when I started to take my project on, so cheers to you for sticking with it. Giving up is something you would regret forever, it just doesn't seem like you.

Starting to make some progress so time for some updates:
First of all, if you have followed some of the threads that I have listed above, you heard that ungodly sound my engine made. Very discouraging. So discouraging in fact that I didn't even try to diagnose it. Instead I just assumed the worst, and scheduled a tear down. Why such drastic measures you ask? A friend of mine insists that this is still an old car and old car will always brake down. I refuse to subscribe to that way of thinking. When I was road racing motorcycles many years ago, my race mechanic many years ago taught me about living components. Determining their life expectancy and scheduling preventative maintenance accordingly. Crank shafts were good for so many hours, wheel bearing for other hours. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1454099885.jpg My current engine guy Chris only half jokingly suggests that these engine will last 40 years "the way we drive them." So, without a second thought, I'm preparing for the next 40 years before he gets too old. Also, I am becoming self efficient on the road, so everything in removing the engine from the car (minus the jack and jack stands) was accomplished using my on board tool set as a test to make sure that I had everything that I need before some mega road trip that I might never go on.;) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1454100207.jpg |

Leaking exhaust culprit. Could THIS be the noise?
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1454103388.jpg Loosened fly wheel bolt. That hasn't been touched by a human for a long time. How did that happen? Maybe this is the noise? Probably, but I've already decided that we are going inside... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1454103544.jpg |
Great threads and great source of information what a PITA about your motor but the good news is a fresh motor.
Gotta say, for months now whenever I see "saved from the crusher" since I don't know your track, I immediately see a car at the auto wreckers in one of those huge compactors/crushers. |
WOW wayner... wicked bummah dude... pm me if you would like to talk on tele about where u r at on the tear down...
in all, this is part of the journey of owning a "classic or older" car... ALL of them have this happen sooner or latter...DOES NOT MATTER WHAT THE CAR BRAND IS EITHER...NO MATTER WHAT YOU FIND AS THEY ARE OLDER... similar to people... probably no fault of the previous guy who built/rebuilt what ever he did... just old(er) parts that fail and maybe... just maybe, something gave up the ghost & failed for who knows what reason... lmk so we can catch up... bob |
