LOL, that brought back memories.
When it comes to aftermarket turbochargers you don't ask people if it would work, they will almost always say no. You have to ask who has done it and filter out the advice from those who haven't. About 5 years ago I anounced to the 914 world that I was going to build and install a turbocharger system on a 2 liter type 4 engine in my 914. Oh, you can't do that, it'll get too hot. The heads won't take it. The pistons will melt. The valve seats will drop. All kinds of horror stories based on speculation without any personal experience. They were sure it was a bad idea even though they hadn't tried it. Mind you some of the people making these statements were and still are extremely knowledgeable and have my respect. Guess what? I put the turbocharger on and it worked great. I drove it for a couple of years and sold it to a guy who used it as a daily driver for 2 years before selling it. I kept the boost at 7 psi and ran it a tad rich on the top end and backed off the timing 5 degrees. No pinging and it didn't run hot even at autocrosses. Since then there have been a bunch of type 4 914s with turbochargers with all types of different set ups. That's why whenever someone mentions turbocharging on a 914 board some smart a$$ jumps in with "you can't turbocharge a 914" said tongue in cheek. It's more than a standing inside joke, it's become a 914 icon. |

That running joke may have run over to the 911sc as well? I made a comment on the rennlist board to which the same statement was given "you can't turbocharge an sc

If they had a smiley face or a winky face at the end of the statement, they were prolly quoting the original joke.
if they didn't have the smiley face, they might not have known what they were talking about ![]() Heck, for all I know it might have been me posting that joke to you. |

Next time someone sais you can't turbocharge an SC show them this picture. Kinda brings home the point that you can do most anything you want.

The twin turbo SC engine was created by Mark Hargett (Natchamp). He has a website documenting the process. The first version was supercharged and is just as much a work of art.

Who has installed a BAE turbo without re-curving the distributor?

I'm still using the stock dizzy with stock timing.
I'm only running 7 psi and no intercooler (yet). I have the cis going to 12.4 to 1 at full boost as verified and "influenced" by the LM-1. Mikey drove my car when it was at 6 psi boost and the cis wasn't exactly dialed in yet. It's much better now. He drove my V8 914 around the block once, he rode in my turbo 914 at an AX at san diego and was polite enough to not tell me how much I sucked (my first AX, I was fast in the slow parts and slow in the fast parts, I'm a little better at it now). He hasn't offered to let me drive the speedster, or the 3.6 cab, or......... ![]() |

I used a MSD BTM boost retard ignition with my stock dizzy instead of a recurve.
Guys here is a pic of my engine. Still some work left on it but it's getting there. 79 SC 3.0 engine with 1992 3.3 turbo pistons and cylinders makes it into a 3.12. 930 intake with Euro fuel head and injectors. Twin plug. 1 BAE intake boot on the throttle body. ![]() ![]()

Wow, that engine is a work of art, Chappy. Which MSD model do you recommend for my '77 2.7? (recently rebuilt w/turbo parts & stronger case)
Sammy, how do I adjust my CIS like you did? If you come to the East coast you can drive my cars.

I found that it works really well.
MSD 6BTM, PN 6462 The 6 BTM is ideal for engines with a turbo or supercharger. Not only will the engine benefit from MSD’s full power CD sparks, but there is also an adjustable boost/timing retard circuit to prevent detonation. The BTM features a dash mounted control knob that lets you adjust the amount of timing retard. It can be adjusted from 0° per pound of boost to 3° per pound. The boost pressure is monitored by a sensor built into the MSD. The 6 BTM also shares the Soft Touch Rev Control of the 6AL Ignition for overrev protection http://www.msdignition.com/ignition_7_6462.htm

Thanks! I'll start shopping for that model of MSD.
Next is to figure out how to adjust my CIS. I can turn the allen wrench to the right to richen it, but without an oxygen sensor I'm not sure how to make fine adjustments. I guess the MSD will help burn off some extra gas so I guess it's safer to go richer than lean.

I think you need to make some measurements on your fuel pressure and control pressures. There seems to be an optimum WRT control pressure warm that you'd like the adjust to for turbo operations. Do you have an A/F gauge?
I haven't recurved my distributor (yet), but I am still in he start-up phase of the project. Gotta fix my oil leak first, and go from there. Chap, your engine looks great!
