Shaun,

You registered and paid your fee for the April 2022 Engine Rebuilding Workshop but failed to attend due work conflict. A few of the participants were from previous schedules (2020 & 2021) attended the last Workshop in April 2022. I was doing the Workshop as a passion and enjoy meeting people with similar interest.

It would be my pleasure to see you attend the next Engine Rebuilding Workshop and considered a seat reserved for you. Thank you for offering to raise some $$ to pay for the refund.

The problem with the April 2020 Workshop cancellation was not my fault and was openly discussed to have it on a later date. The guy never once communicated with me until last week. At first, I thought he was a scammer requesting a refund. He was still waiting for the details like venue for the April 2020 Workshop until last week(?).

Lastly, thanks to you and others for offering some $$ to cover the refund. There were several members who failed to attend the Workshop and gratuitously donated their fees like you. They could all attend in the next Workshops. Please contact me. Thanks.

Tony

I'm in if it's mid-May and can pay now.

Hi Tony
I would be keen when you nail down some exact dates.

Rjf321 12-29-2022 09:24 AM

Hi Tony,

I would like to attend in April or May. Please count me in.

Happy to contribute a little extra if it helps to get the complainer off your back.

Ross

I know that I had paid an extra $50 (happily) because of this issue before, and so that it would be addressed. Tony's class was well worth the expense, but the monies we all paid should have addressed the problem person.

SkunkWorks 12-29-2022 11:13 PM

Tony, great to see you offering this class again!

I'd like to attend once you finalize the date(s). I was signed up for a previous session but couldn't at the time due to covid.

Tony, please check your email.
Cheers,
Johan

Bugstrider,

I might consider conducting one in 2023 but there will be some drastic changes. Instead of conducting the Workshop in the same venue or location we had in the past, I am contemplating doing it at home in my 3-car garage/carport. Moving the engines, engine hoist, tools, tables, chairs, etc. to the venue is too much work and effort for me to undertake.

I was able to transport the equipment and tools before by myself but it is becoming too much work for an old man like myself. Having the Workshop at my place could reduce the physical effort needed to get all the things we need for the classes.

The number of participants per group will be less than 8. I had 10 participants per group in 2018, then reduced to 8 per session in 2021 & 2022. For the next one in 2023, I like to have 6 participants per session. The participants will have more hands on experience for engine tear down and assembly.

The dates would be between mid-April 2023 to mid-May 2023. There is one problem I have to attend at the moment. I received a PM a week ago from a 2020 registered participant that he was not aware that the April 2020 Workshop was cancelled due to Covid-19. Could you believe this? And he will report me to the forum moderators for stealing his $250 registration fee. Will keep you guys posted. Thanks.

Tony

Great two days. I attended in April 22. Seeing Tonys home made tools is worth the price of admission on its own.

David Borden 01-09-2023 01:12 PM

I had a great time and learned great deal at Tony's class as well. @AIKidd, agreed the tools he made were fantastic! Tony is a super guy and his efforts were greatly appreciated.

Change in Venue..........

For those people who had attended the previous Engine Rebuilding Workshops (April 2018, September 2021, and April 2022), the venue was held in a very nice commercial building with ample parking space. Transporting the engines, tools, tables, chairs, etc. was a logistic challenge for me. And after paying the daily room rental, I could barely get $20 per hour for my 10-hour a day work. But I enjoyed every minute with you guys.

It was never intended to be a business venture in the first place and would like to do it again. I am finishing my three-car garage/carport at the moment and move the venue at my place. I don’t have an exotic garage but a decent work area to conduct the Workshop. My garage has no built-in AC or heater but I could provide electric fans and space heaters if we ever need them.

One thing I like to add to the Workshop which I was not allowed due to insurance restriction during the previous sessions is to do an initial start-up of a 911 motor in a home-made engine test stand. I have been running 911 motors in my garage for many years now. And for those people interested in CIS, I have plenty to share with you.

Right now, I am looking for late April to early May 2023. The schedule would be the same like in the past. Monday & Tuesday and Thursday & Friday (8:00 AM to 5:00 PM) with 1-hour lunch break. For the prospective participants, we will have the details in a separate email.

So let’s begin a head count:

Tentative dates and we could slide the dates:
April 24-25 (tentatively closed)
April 27-28

May 1-2
May 4-5
May 8-9
May 11-12

Ricardo,

It would not be easy or simple to conduct an Engine Rebuilding Workshop away from HOME. But it is doable. I was offered to fly and stay for free at a resort in the Canary Islands with my wife and rebuild a 3.0 liter. The invitation was exciting but not practical. It could take several weeks or months to finish and run the motor. The cylinder heads may need some machine work and spare parts might take weeks to arrive. I reluctantly refused to accept the generous offer plus I had a full time job at that time. Now that I am retired, my schedule is more flexible.

A workshop is much less stressful because I have done this many times over. If you are serious and have a garage to do the sessions, send me an email to discuss the logistics. We might be able to pull this through. Thanks.

Tony,
An intermediate step could be to organise a video conference, using ZOOM or SKYPE.

Tony has noted several times in pages past that this really isnt a feasible idea. Having taken this class it is pretty clear that given the subject matter, the space constraints, and the logistics of needing at least a two, and better a three camera set up, that is a valid summation from Tony.

This is a hands on project. It really is best to be on-site observing, handling, and taking notes. Trying to do all that while someone is poking a camera in the way of you trying to do what you need to do will be a frustrating experience.

I often consider taking this class again, such a joy to learn this stuff. Tony is a fine instructor who created a fantastic learning environment. We are so lucky to have him here on the East Coast.

Hi Tony,

This class and the way you teach it sounds like the perfect preparation for my upcoming engine rebuild, thanks to a broken head stud and worn valve guides on my 3.2.

I'd be flying in from Austria just for this, so will have to check regarding decently priced flight options to the US. The 11-12 May class looks like the safest bet, to make sure that the whole thing doesn't get cancelled at the last minute if one participant drops out? I'm afraid my cheap economy tickets will not be refundable....

Cheers,
Lukas

Lukas,

I have another guy from Europe attending the April 27-28 Group. Pick the dates you could attend and book your flight. You could save some $$$ if you take the local train from Philadelphia International Airport to Norristown, PA. It is not a direct ride and requires a transfer. Since you are from Europe, you are more familiar using local trains to commute. For hotel accommodations, I suggest check with Hyatt House in East Norriton, a walking distance from the previous venue.

where are you situated in Europe ? if we could have 10 participants, we could divide the cost over the participants for Tony to fly over / hotel / food maybe ? A garage and an engine doesn't seem the hardest part ?

I'd gladly pay a couple of EURO's extra for this unique event ! keep me posted

SkunkWorks 02-13-2023 11:10 AM

For the April 27-28 folks, anyone heading to the swap meet the day after? I'm flying in and won't have transport but would be happy to chip in for group transport if folks are keen.

FA-18C 02-13-2023 11:50 AM

Kenneth and 27-28 APR folks. If attendees would like to coordinate lodging locations and share general info ahead of time PM me and I will put together a spreadsheet for contact etc... I am driving up from Virginia the day prior and will have a Highlander, more than willing to assist with those flying in getting to and from the hotel to the training site.

I am planning on driving over to Carlisle for the Swap Meet, but will depart SAT afternoon headed south towards the barn. Anyone catching a ride over would need to sort out how to get back to their point of departure.

Chris
