changing front rotors

When you change the front rotors, do you need to replace/remove the wheel bearing seal, or is it as easy as the Haynes manual makes it seem:

remove brake pads
remove caliper
undo dust cap
undo lug nut
pull off rotor

???

You can do it on the car if you are a bit lucky....

The rotor is bolted on the hub - IF you can undo the bolts with the hub on the car - go for it.

Otherwise, you will have to remove the grease cap, loosen and remove the hub nut and remove the hub\rotor and then remove the rotor from the hub.

If you remove the hub, IMO you should at least replace the seal and repack the bearings with fresh grease.

When replacing the hub nut - it is tight enough when you can just move the washer behind it. Tighten the allen bolt to 11ftlbs.

the bolts that connect the rotor in the hub can be a pain to get at from where they are...... otherwise it is as simple as the haynes manual explains...

You are better of pulling it the hub completely out and doing it like AF explains.... Its a good idea to (replace the bearings if needed) and use a new seal....

The rears on the other hand can be done with your eyes closed..

I would suggest pulling the pads and calipers off first. Use some wire to hang them from the strut so you don't bent the brake tubing.

I've not had problems getting the rotors off of the front hubs with then still on the car. Still this is a good time to inspect and repack the front bearings if you haven't done it recently.

thanks for the info. i will attempt to do this without removing the hubs, if at all possible

also, can anyone tell me the size of the allen socket that i will need to use... just to make sure I can aquire it from a friend if i don't have it here

Also make sure the outer bearing doesnt fall on a dirty surface when u take off the hub ..if u have to.
