Wtb 911t
Hi everyone, hope this is in the right place...
Anyway, I am looking to buy an early 911, preferably a 70/71 911T non Targa (a friend just bought one, would be nice to share parts orders, experience etc.). I want to spend a maximum of $20K to get one that is pretty much "done". If that means buying one for 10K that needs 10K put in, or one that is ready to go for 20K, either option is fine. The only thing I don't want to deal with is rust or bodywork. Know anyone who is selling? I am in Edmonton, but am willing to travel anywhere a day-trip would get me there and back to view (600km or so). I would fly anywhere in Canada if the deal was right... I am planning on being in Calgary on Sunday to check one out, if anyone has one to show that would be excellent. I will also be in Toronto for one night this Tuesday if someone out there has one. Thanks |

first off, welcome aboard. there are a lot of helpfull people on the Pelican BBS. if you are going to limit your search to 600 km from Edm., that will really limit your choices. My theory on the pregalvanized (75 and older) cars is that the most important decision is WHICH particular pregalvanized car you purchase!! Rust is a huge enemy of these cars. there are enough mechanical battles you will face without worrying about a rusted out, bondoed up tub. here is a

Thanks for the welcome! You have a good point about the Pelican listers all over the place, honestly hadn't thought about that. A friend of mine just bought a 1970T and I fell in love (with the car) right away. After scouring the internet, it seems that by far the biggest concern is rust - so it is the one thing that will nix me buying a specific car for sure.
I have no idea what is involved with getting a US car back into Canada, if it isn't a big deal, that would certainly expand the possibilities... I guess 600km is just the limit I'm willing to drive for a 'borderline' car. I would fly a lot farther than that for a 'definite' car. It will be a weekend car, no racing. I am using all of my limited self control to not get in a hurry and buy the first one I see... I would be open to an SC if the deal was right, but there is just something about the cars up to 73 that just looks right to me. |

regarding purchasing a car from the US.--use the search function-(top right hand side of your screen) --you will find out quite a bit of info. Also, go to the Customs Canada website; there is info and duty /tax rates there. Also, you must go through US customs before taking the car out of the US ( i believe they need x amount of hours or days to make sure the title is clear, not stolen etc.) Remember, patience now will pay dividends later. oh yes, you will also need some luck!!. A 18 month rust project will deplete your enthusiasm and bank account!! If you haven't joined the PCA (porsche club of america) you should. once a member, you will be able to access the pca mart classified ads. and you also get their magazine (Panorama) monthly that has cars for sale. If you can find a car that has been owned by an enthusiast, the odds are it will be a much better car than something off Larry's Used Lot. (the luck thing helps again). My first Porsche, purchased fall 2000, was/is an SC (click on the links in my signature) they are great cars. enough 'rawness' to remind you of an early porsche, galvanized body, reliability, and a few creature comforts to remind you of a 'modern' porsche. there was a red early 911 in Calgary on ebay a few days ago, not sure if it sold or not, or of the quality. not sure if you are into chartruese, but these guys have an excellent looking '73E.... ( it is taking a lot of self control on my part not to reach for the phone) it is only lacking a set of fuchs wheels and a curvy canyon road IMO!! http://www.route30classics.com/ they are in Oregon.

Good call on the "chartruese", I will definately give these guys a call. If it was slightly less green I think I would be booking a ticket now. It sure looks like it is in good condition... I wonder if they are open Saturdays (I guess I will find out).
Thanks |

Importing a car into Canada is quite easy. Make sure you have the title for the car. If the car is over 25 years old it is classified as an antique and all you pay is the GST on the value in CDN funds at the border. If it is over 15 years old it is exempt from Transport Canadas rules and you do not have to change anything to meet Canadian standards. I've brought 3 914's back home with me in the last year and never contacted US Customs about any of them. What would they care? The car is leaving their country and they should only be concerned if it was entering the USA. The paperwork and inspection at the border takes about an hour. Canada Customs checks the serial numbers to the title and the build date sticker. Also if you find a great deal take copies of your emails to show Customs that what you payed is the price shown on the bill of sale. If you don't document it, they can access a value. There is a couple of interesting posts on the 914 club site about buying a used car that anyone who is thinking about buying a car should read. Eye opening. http://www.914club.com/bbs2/index.php?act=ST&f=2&t=2702& and http://www.914club.com/bbs2/index.php?act=ST&f=2&t=2772&

The US Customs *do* care. For whatever reason, you were lucky your cars made it through. The US Customs want to know that cars leaving their country have valid titles (not stolen), and are not the subjects of any criminal activities. My experience is in importing/exporting m/c's. Rules for cars are no different. Call the US Customs before you import to Canada for info. If in doubt, use the services of a Customs Broker. They know how to cut through the red tape, and can save you a lot of frustration.

There is an '82 Targa for sale, $21,000 CAN in the Kelowna area. I haven't seen it, but a guy I know looked at it, drove it and is drooling now. He had my mechanic look at it and it passed A-OK too. He can't afford it right now though?
You can call Frank at (250) 766-0944 for more info. I have NO association with this sale. If you're interested, I can go and look at it and send you some email pics, but you can probably get all that info from Frank too? Good Luck with your search, and Welcome to the Board. Keep us informed as to what you're finding and looking at, we all enjoy reading this stuff. Sorry I didn't post earlier, just found this thread. Cheers!

Thanks for the info and the leads! Since my first post I have checked out a few cars (all rust boats so far). I have further made up my mind that I want to stick with a 70-73 non-targa (they just seem to be the ones that "do it" for me). The "chartreuse" car in Oregon is very tempting, but I know I couldn't live with the color, and once I add the cost of a decent paint job etc. I don't know if it is such a good deal. I just saw an ad in the Bargain Finder for a 71 911E for 15K in Surrey. I don't suppose anyone is close enough to have a look?
Now that I am over the initial "got to have one today", I must admit I am enjoying "the hunt" |

Hey Edmonchuk! grab an autotrader there are a couple older cars in there.
I don't know what the interest in the older buckets is but each to their own. I would hope you wouldn't spend anywhere near $20K no matter what condition. Good luck and keep searching....

Ok I checked with US Customs. I called Canada Customs first and they knew nothing about the US side wanting to see the title or check the cars before they left the US side. Canada Customs then gave me the phone number of US Customs.
US Customs said they do want a copy of the title faxed to the port of export (where the car is leaving the US from) 72 hours before the car leaves the USA. They then want you to stop at the port of exit (US side)so they can check the serial numbers against the car and the title. Then the process is the same as I described above for importing it in to Canada. You learn something new every day. I had a lengthy discussion with both Customs offices about the 3 cars I have imported.

Stealthn, I would only pay $20K if it was REALLY good, but I would still pay that much (rather than 10K for one that will still cost me 10K+ to fix). I will check the trader, thanks!

If you're willing to wait to find the "right" car, I'd recommend holding out for at least an "E", and I slightly prefer the 2.4L cars. There's a fair bit more punch to the car, and you won't regret it every time you out-drag your buddy... :-)
I bought my '73E when I was living in Edmonton from a guy in Red Deer for _much_ less than your cap, and haven't regretting it. Mine did need some minor mechanical work and a paint job, but I'm still under your budget. The only parts that differ from your buddy's are one's you wouldn't really be swapping anyway. Good luck!

Anyone of you who has bought one of these older 911's here in Canada - were you able to find one that wasn't seriously rusty? All the ones I have seen before are either rusty or a bunch of the bottom has been replaced. I don't even know what the bottom of the car is supposed to look like as I haven't seen anything yet that was close to being rust free or original.
