Prostate cancer

My Urologist called yesterday to let me know that biopsies done last week coincident with turp surgery found prostate cancer. Appointment for catheter removal this morning. Any suggestions for what I should be questioning?

Sorry for the diagnosis try not to panic . When you meet with your doctor/s listen to their advice on treatment . I highly recommend getting multiple doctors to review the data . In my case I went to three doctors and each recommendation was slightly different , I ended up going with radioactive seeds implanted with several weeks of radiotherapy . That was 3 years ago and knock on wood all clear . The brother hood on Pelican is here to help and support if you are comfortable with sharing . Read through my original post you may find some useful data . Good luck .

First, I am not a doctor. However, I have much experience in the field and with this specific cancer and treatment options. One perspective:

Do you want to worry about it returning for the rest of your life? Radiation causes scarring and if cancer returns in gets ugly to remove and unfortunately much more tissue needs to be removed resulting quality of life loss. Also unfortunately, depending on where you live and who owns the radiation treatment centers etc..., the docs make more money by recommending radiation. They also may be conviced it’s the best treatment, opinions differ. No hate reply’s please. Reimbursment / payment influences care.

My opinion:

If it’s early stage, then nerve sparing dissection (ie deffication, ejaculation and urination maintained) and complete prostate removal (negative margin) are possible with skilled hands assisted by great technology. Look up da Vinci robotic assisted prostatectomy. Watch the videos. Talk with multiple docs. Then, just get it removed - my opinion. Again, I am not a doctor.

Edit: Also, whatever you do, don’t listen to some idiot on a Porsche forum writing like he knows something about prostate cancer.

Agree with the above. Only suggestion to add is try to find an oncologist who specializes in prostate cancer or who has a lot of expertise in the area. Luckily, we have the Chicago Prostate Cancer Center in the area and this is their only focus.
I went with the seeds 15 months ago, 67 of them and radiation for 5 weeks. Seems to be working as PSA is down and prostate has shrunk drastically. Only issue has been peeing a lot and a period of intense burning when I peed for about 8 weeks. Surgery is still an option if things change but I opted for less invasive treatment first as success is 90%.
Good luck and be positive as this is a very treatable and, typically, a slow growing cancer.

new poster very long time lurker.
In 06 was diagnosed with prostate cancer ( 75% infected ) Dr. explained various treatments seeds, radiation and radical prostectomy. His suggestion being mine was 75% was to remove it. Seeing as he was featured in Chicago magazine as one of the top Dr's in his field I did not seek another opinion. Had the surgery ( non davinci ) it's now 12 years later immeasurable PSA count no diapers.
No erectile function..........but still here and can control when I go to the bathroom
Rich

P.S. do your mate as many times as you can before surgery

I've heard that a lot of guys do nothing about it as the treatment is worse than living with the condition.

I hope to never face that decision.

Good luck man.

I've been taking Saw Palmetto for about seven or eight years, might help, might not - nobody knows for sure. Might even help slow hair loss and stimulate hair growth, it did for me.

Saw Palmetto for Prostate Health

As for saw palmetto, it does not increase your risk of prostate cancer. It decreases it. And if your body doesn't need it, it will do no harm. If you do choose to use a supplement, please understand that you need to be careful of the brand. As I explain below, most brands on the market are close to worthless because they use the inactive form of the plant.
Prostate Cancer Risk Factors
https://www.webmd.com/prostate-cancer/guide/prostate-cancer-risk-factors

All men are at risk for developing prostate cancer. About 1 man in 7 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime, but only 1 man in 39 will die of this disease. About 80 percent of men who reach age 80 have prostate cancer cells in their prostate. Besides being male, there are other factors, such as age, race, and family history that may contribute to the risk.
From what little I know of the subject, just about all men older than 50 have prostate cancer cells in their prostate. Living a healthy lifestyle (exercise and diet) helps your body maintain a truce of sorts with the cancer growth rate.

A friend of mine has prostate cancer, he said almost nobody actually dies from it, something like 1:100 ...............you don't want to be the 100th guy.

Sorry to hear Richard. My brother in laws both had prostate cancer. The younger one was diagnosed late and unfortunately passed away after five years of suffering. When he was first diagnosed he let his brother know and that he should get tested. The older brother was tested and was also found to have prostate cancer. The latter decided to have his prostate removed and 5 plus years later he is cancer free.

I am not a med professional. As the above says get more than one opinion. Early treatment is preferable.

Cheers, Guy

Your age and health will play into your options. If surgical prostatectomy is an option, robotic removal is something to strongly consider.

check your Gleason score, indicator on agressiveness. Go to the Partin tables and review the information there. PROSTATE CANCER -The James Buchanan Brady Urological Institute - Urology at Hopkins For treatment only use doctors who see multiple patients and specialize in this disease. If you choose surgery ask questions about nerve sparing, whether laprocopic or robotic surgery is best.

Do your research. As others have said, this is a slow growing cancer. One indicator is the rise in level of psa. Mine was stuck around 3.8 to 4.2 but jumped in 18months to 11. That showed something was wrong. Lived near Johns Hopkins so I was able to go to the Brady Institute for treatment, one of the best

PM me if you need more.

Some good DaVinci robotic programs in just down the road in Denver.

That's what I did 10+ years ago. Nerve sparing a good possibility. Recovery pretty easy.

Good luck. Do what you need to do and never give up. Stay positive.

My best friend of 40 years passed away 2 years ago. He had his prostate removed, chemo, radiation, etc. Fought it for 10 years.

Heroin. I live a pretty clean life. If I get diagnosed with stage 3 or 4 cancer, I am trying heroin and cocaine and marijuana. Maybe acid and extasy too. WTF not?

Good luck! Hope you caught it in time to fix it
